Dear SIG-TIS member

You receive this e-mail because you are a member of ASIS&T SIG
Technology, Information, and Society (TIS). The purpose of the email is
to ask for your vote regarding a proposed change to the name of the SIG.

The current SIG leadership are proposing changing the name of SIG-TIS to
SIG-Social Informatics (SIG-SI). To register support or opposition,
send an email to:

socinformatics at yahoo.com

The advantages of changing the name to SIG-SI include:

(1) The term “social informatics” or “SI” is already recognized by many
practitioners and researchers in the field of information science; thus
it is relatively easier to expand membership;
(2) A number of SIG-TIS members identify themselves SI researchers;
(3) The SIG will have a narrowly defined and easily identifiable focus.
 This will be of help when we sponsor panels and mini-conferences.
(4) SIG-TIS content is already being identified by the term “social
informatics” in the ASIST proceedings. (See the Sunday Oct 30 column of
tracks at http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM05/program.html)

The procedure for changing a SIG name requires approval by at least 10%
of the current SIG membership. According to listserv records, the SIG
currently has 174 members; therefore, in order to change the name, we
need emails of support from at least 18 members. If you approve or
disapprove of the proposal to change the name, please send an email to
the following address socinformatics at yahoo.com expressing your opinion.
 All comments will be registered!

The results of the vote are sent to the ASIST SIG Steering Committee
(which oversees all SIGs) for discussion and approval.

*** To register support or opposition for the name change, send an email to:
