Abstract:
This paper presents our proposed framework and experimental results on a
quantity-quality composite performance assessment and ranking of Indian
institutions in computer science (CS) research. We have tried to rank
the 100 most productive Indian institutions in CS research on a
composite single value rank derived from both quantity' and quality'
parameters. Our work follows a standard scientometric methodology and
uses data obtained from Scopus for 25 year period (1989-2013). The data
are computationally analysed on relevant primary and secondary
indicators and a composite quantity-quality ranking of research
performance of Indian institutions in CS domain is computed. The
proposed framework and the composite ranks obtained are analysed,
evaluated and correlated with individual indicators and other recent
work. The results obtained present a comprehensive analysis of research
competitiveness of Indian institutions in CS research, both relative to
each other and with the world top, and present inferences useful for
policy makers, funding agencies, prospective students, and the CS
community at large.

Does Interdisciplinary Research Lead to Higher Citation Impact? The Different Effect of Proximal and Distal Interdisciplinarity

Abstract:
This article analyses the effect of degree of interdisciplinarity on the
citation impact of individual publications for four different scientific
fields. We operationalise interdisciplinarity as disciplinary diversity
in the references of a publication, and rather than treating
interdisciplinarity as a monodimensional property, we investigate the
separate effect of different aspects of diversity on citation impact:
i.e. variety, balance and disparity. We use a Tobit regression model to
examine the effect of these properties of interdisciplinarity on
citation impact, controlling for a range of variables associated with
the characteristics of publications. We find that variety has a positive
effect on impact, whereas balance and disparity have a negative effect.
Our results further qualify the separate effect of these three aspects
of diversity by pointing out that all three dimensions of
interdisciplinarity display a curvilinear (inverted U-shape)
relationship with citation impact. These findings can be interpreted in
two different ways. On the one hand, they are consistent with the view
that, while combining multiple fields has a positive effect in knowledge
creation, successful research is better achieved through research
efforts that draw on a relatively proximal range of fields, as distal
interdisciplinary research might be too risky and more likely to fail.
On the other hand, these results may be interpreted as suggesting that
scientific audiences are reluctant to cite heterodox papers that mix
highly disparate bodies of knowledge-thus giving less credit to
publications that are too groundbreaking or challenging.

I Like, I Cite? Do Facebook Likes Predict the Impact of Scientific Work?

Abstract:
Due to the increasing amount of scientific work and the typical delays
in publication, promptly assessing the impact of scholarly work is a
huge challenge. To meet this challenge, one solution may be to create
and discover innovative indicators. The goal of this paper is to
investigate whether Facebook likes for unpublished manuscripts that are
uploaded to the Internet could be used as an early indicator of the
future impact of the scientific work. To address our research question,
we compared Facebook likes for manuscripts uploaded to the Harvard
Business School website (Study 1) and the bioRxiv website (Study 2) with
traditional impact indicators (journal article citations, *Impact
Factor*, Immediacy Index) for those manuscripts that have been published
as a journal article. Although based on our full sample of Study 1 (N =
170), Facebook likes do not predict traditional impact indicators, for
manuscripts with one or more Facebook likes (n = 95), our results
indicate that the more Facebook likes a manuscript receives, the more
journal article citations the manuscript receives. In additional
analyses (for which we categorized the manuscripts as psychological and
non-psychological manuscripts), we found that the significant prediction
of citations stems from the psychological and not the non-psychological
manuscripts. In Study 2, we observed that Facebook likes (N = 270) and
non-zero Facebook likes (n = 84) do not predict traditional impact
indicators. Taken together, our findings indicate an interdisciplinary
difference in the predictive value of Facebook likes, according to which
Facebook likes only predict citations in the psychological area but not
in the non-psychological area of business or in the field of life
sciences. Our paper contributes to understanding the possibilities and
limits of the use of social media indicators as potential early
indicators of the impact of scientific work.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to review all articles published in two
temporarily available radiation oncology journals (Radiation Oncology
Investigations, Journal of Radiosurgery) in order to evaluate their
scientific impact. From several potential measures of impact and
relevance of research, we selected article citation rate because
landmark or practice-changing research is likely to be cited frequently.
The citation database Scopus was used to analyse number of citations.
During the time period 1996-1999 the journal Radiation Oncology
Investigations published 205 articles, which achieved a median number of
6 citations (range 0-116). However, the most frequently cited article in
the first 4 volumes achieved only 23 citations. The Journal of
Radiosurgery published only 31 articles, all in the year 1999, which
achieved a median number of 1 citation (range 0-11). No prospective
randomized studies or phase I-II collaborative group trials were
published in these journals. Apparently, the Journal of Radiosurgery
acquired relatively few manuscripts that were interesting and important
enough to impact clinical practice. Radiation Oncology Investigations'
citation pattern was better and closer related to that reported in
several previous studies focusing on the field of radiation oncology.
The vast majority of articles published in temporarily available
radiation oncology journals had limited clinical impact and achieved few
citations. Highly influential research was unlikely to be submitted
during the initial phase of establishing new radiation oncology
journals.

Abstract:
Background: Public health research has gained increasing importance in
India's national health policy as the country seeks to address the high
burden of disease and its inequitable distribution, and embarks on an
ambitious agenda towards universalising health care.
Objective: This study aimed at describing the public health research
output in India, its focus and distribution, and the actors involved in
the research system. It makes recommendations for systematically
promoting and strengthening public health research in the country.
Design: The study was a bibliometric analysis of PubMed and IndMed
databases for years 2000-2010. The bibliometric data were analysed in
terms of biomedical focus based on the Global Burden of Disease,
location of research, research institutions, and funding agencies.
Results: A total of 7,893 eligible articles were identified over the
11-year search period. The annual research output increased by 42%
between 2000 and 2010. In total, 60.8% of the articles were related to
communicable diseases, newborn, maternal, and nutritional causes,
comparing favourably with the burden of these causes (39.1%). While the
burdens from non-communicable diseases and injuries were 50.2 and 10.7%,
respectively, only 31.9 and 7.5% of articles reported research for these
conditions. The north-eastern states and the Empowered-Action-Group
states of India were the most under-represented for location of
research. In total, 67.2% of papers involved international
collaborations and 49.2% of these collaborations were with institutions
in the UKor USA; 35.4% of the publications involved international
funding and 71.2% of funders were located in the UKor USA.
Conclusions: While public health research output in India has increased
significantly, there are marked inequities in relation to the burden of
disease and the geographic distribution of research. Systematic priority
setting, adequate funding, and institutional capacity building are
needed to address these inequities.

Abstract:
Background Microsurgery has developed significantly since the inception
of the first surgical microscope. There have been few attempts to
describe "classic" microsurgery articles. In this study citation
analysis was done to identify the most highly cited clinical and basic
science articles published in five peer-reviewed plastic surgery
journals.
Methods Thomson/Reuters web of knowledge was used to identify the most
highly cited microsurgery articles from five journals: Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery, Annals of Plastic Surgery, Journal of Plastic,
Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, Journal of Reconstructive
Microsurgery, and Microsurgery. Articles were identified and sorted
based on the number of citations and citations per year.
Results The 50 most cited clinical and basic science articles were
identified. For clinical articles, number of total citations ranged from
120 to 691 (mean, 212.38) and citations per year ranged from 30.92 to
3.05 (mean, 9.33). The most common defect site was the head and neck (n
= 15, 30%), and flaps were perforator and muscle/musculocutaneous flaps
(n = 10 each, 20%, respectively). For basic science articles, number of
citations ranged from 71 to 332 (mean, 130.82) and citations per year
ranged from 2.20 to 11.07 (mean, 5.27). There were 27 animal, 21
cadaveric, and 2 combined studies.
Conclusions The most highly cited microsurgery articles are a direct
reflection of the educational and clinical trends. Awareness of the most
frequently cited articles may serve as a basis for core knowledge in the
education of plastic surgery trainees. Level of Evidence III.

Abstract:
OBJECT Various bibliometric indices based on the citations accumulated
by scholarly articles, including the h-index, g-index, e-index, and
Google's i10-index, may be used to evaluate academic productivity in
neurological surgery. The present article provides a comprehensive
assessment of recent academic publishing output from 103 US
neurosurgical residency programs and investigates intradepartmental
publishing equality among faculty members.
METHODS Each institution was considered a single entity, with the 5-year
academic yield of every neurosurgical faculty member compiled to compute
the following indices: ih(5), cumulative h, ig(5), ie(5), and (10(5)
(based on publications and citations from 2009 through 2013).
Intradepartmental comparison of productivity among faculty members
yielded Gini coefficients for publications and citations. National and
regional comparisons, institutional rankings, and intradepartmental
publishing equality measures are presented.
RESULTS The median numbers of departmental faculty, total publications
and citations, ih(5), summed h, ig(5), ie(5), 110(5), and Gini
coefficients for publications and citations were 13, 82, 716, 12, 144,
23, 16, 17, 0.57, and 0.71, respectively. The top 5 most academically
productive neurosurgical programs based on ih(5)-index were University
of California, San Francisco, University of California, Los Angeles,
University of Pittsburgh, Brigham & Women's Hospital, and Johns Hopkins
University. The Western US region was most academically productive and
displayed greater intradepartmental publishing equality (median
ih[5]-index = 18, median Gini(pub) = 0.56). In all regions, large
departments with relative intradepartmental publishing equality tend to
be the most academically productive. Multivariable logistic regression
analysis identified the ih(5)-index as the only independent predictor of
intradepartmental publishing equality (Gini(pub) <= 0.5 [OR 1.20, 95% Cl
1.20-1.40, p = 0.03]).
CONCLUSIONS The ih(5)-index is a novel, simple, and intuitive metric
capable of accurately comparing the recent scholarly efforts of
neurosurgical programs and accurately predicting intradepartmental
publication equality. The ih(5)index is relatively insensitive to
factors such as isolated highly productive and/or no longer academically
active senior faculty, which tend to distort other bibliometric indices
and mask the accurate identification of currently productive academic
environments. Institutional ranking by ih(5)-index may provide
information of use to faculty and trainee applicants, research funding
institutions, program leaders, and other stakeholders.

Abstract:
The influence degree of academic authors can be judged in one way by
citation-based indices such as the h-index [1]. Marketing researchers
develop a theory of action propagation to measure consumers' influence
in a market; by going viral, an action of marketing essential such as
product adoption or brand awareness is spread to the majority of a
market autonomously. Selecting the most influential consumers as
marketing seeds is a hot topic in marketing research. In this study, we
mine the most influential authors from the perspective of their ability
to propagate scholastic actions such as attending a serial conference or
publishing in a specific journal. The credit distribution model from
Goyal et al. [2] is chosen as the propagation model with two academic
publication networks (citation and coauthoring). Real data consisting of
10 years publication records from DBLP and ACM were used in the
experiments. It is found that the citation network is more efficient
than the coauthoring network to propagate scholastic actions. Top
influential authors who can effectively affect fellows to attend a
serial conference or publish in a specific journal are mined with the
citation publication network.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the research contributions over a 26-year time
frame (1985-2010) of academic institutions and individual authors to the
field of operations management (OM). We use two measures, shared
articles and distributed articles, to assess the research productivity
of institutions as well as individual researchers. Further we assess the
contribution of institutions based on affiliated author research as well
as the research of their PhD graduates. In order to accomplish this, we
utilise the published OM research articles in 11 top-rated and
well-known academic journals over the time period from 1985 to 2010. In
addition to the research, contributions of academic institutions and
individual authors, we look at several bibliometric statistics related
to this body of published research. These measures indicate that the
research constituency is growing as evidenced by increasing numbers of
researchers and institutions represented. Lastly, the collaboration
between researchers appears to be increasing as evidenced by an
increasing percentage of articles with three or more authors and the
average number of authors per article published.

Abstract:
OBJECT Recent works have assessed academic output across neurosurgical
programs using various analyses of accumulated citations as a proxy for
academic activity and productivity. These assessments have emphasized
North American neurosurgical training centers and have largely excluded
centers outside the United States. Because of the long tradition and
level of academic activity in neurosurgery at the University of Toronto,
the authors sought to compare that program's publication and citation
metrics with those of established programs in the US as documented in
the literature. So as to not rely on historical achievements that may be
of less relevance, they focused on recent works, that is, those
published in the most recent complete 5-year period.
METHODS The authors sought to make their data comparable to existing
published data from other programs. To this end, they compiled a list of
published paper's by neurosurgical faculty at the University of Toronto
for the period from 2009 through 2013 using the Scopus database.
Individual author names were disambiguated; the total numbers of papers
and citations were compiled on a yearly basis. They computed a number of
indices, including the ih(5)-index (i.e., the number of citations the
papers received over a 5-year period), the summed h-index of the current
faculty over time, and a number of secondary measures, including the
ig(5), ie(5), and i10(5)-indices. They also determined the impact of
individual authors in driving the results using Gini coefficients. To
address the issue of author ambiguity, which can be problematic in
multicenter bibliometric analyses, they have provided a source dataset
used to determine the ih(5) index for the Toronto program.
RESULTS The University of Toronto Neurosurgery Program had approximately
29 full-time surgically active faculty per year (not including
nonneurosurgical faculty) in the 5-year period from 2009 to 2013. These
faculty published a total of 1217 papers in these 5 years. The total
number of citations from these papers was 13,434. The ih(5)-index at the
University of Toronto was 50.
CONCLUSIONS On the basis of comparison with published bibliometric data
of US programs, the University of Toronto ranks first in terms of number
of publications, number of citations, and ih(5)-index among
neurosurgical programs in North America and most likely in the world.

Abstract:
Rationale
This study aimed to investigate the quality of reporting of anesthesia
and euthanasia in experimental studies in small laboratory mammals
published in the top ten *impact factor* journals.
Methods
A descriptive systematic review was conducted and data was abstracted
from the ten highest ranked journals with respect to *impact factor* in
the categories 'Anesthesiology', 'Critical Care Medicine' and
'Respiratory System' as defined by the 2012 Journal Citation Reports.
Inclusion criteria according to PICOS criteria were as follows: 1)
population: small laboratory mammals; 2) intervention: any form of
anesthesia and/or euthanasia; 3) comparison: not specified; 4) primary
outcome: type of anesthesia, anesthetic agents and type of euthanasia;
secondary outcome: animal characteristics, monitoring, mechanical
ventilation, fluid management, postoperative pain therapy, animal care
approval, sample size calculation and performed interventions; 5) study:
experimental studies. Anesthesia, euthanasia, and monitoring were
analyzed per performed intervention in each article.
Results
The search yielded 845 articles with 1,041 interventions of interest.
Throughout the manuscripts we found poor quality and frequency of
reporting with respect to completeness of data on animal characteristics
as well as euthanasia, while anesthesia (732/1041, 70.3%) and
interventions without survival (970/1041, 93.2%) per se were frequently
reported. Premedication and neuromuscular blocking agents were reported
in 169/732 (23.1%) and 38/732 (5.2%) interventions, respectively.
Frequency of reporting of analgesia during (117/610, 19.1%) and after
painful procedures (38/364, 10.4%) was low. Euthanasia practice was
reported as anesthesia (348/501, 69%), transcardial perfusion (37/501,
8%), carbon dioxide (26/501, 6%), decapitation (22/501, 5%),
exsanguination (23/501, 5%), other (25/501, 5%) and not specified
(20/501, 4%, respectively.
Conclusions
The present systematic review revealed insufficient reporting of
anesthesia and euthanasia methods throughout experimental studies in
small laboratory mammals. Specific guidelines for anesthesia and
euthanasia regimens should be considered to achieve comparability,
quality of animal experiments and animal welfare. These measures are of
special interest when translating experimental findings to future
clinical applications.

Abstract:
Background
An important attribute of the traditional *impact factor* was the
controversial 2-year citation window. So far, several scholars have
proposed using different citation time windows for evaluating journals.
However, there is no confirmation whether a longer citation time window
would be better. How did the journal evaluation effects of 3IF, 4IF, and
6IF comparing with 2IF and 5IF? In order to understand these questions,
we made a comparative study of impact factors with different citation
time windows with the peer-reviewed scores of ophthalmologic journals
indexed by Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) database.
Methods
The peer-reviewed scores of 28 ophthalmologic journals were obtained
through a self-designed survey questionnaire. Impact factors with
different citation time windows (including 2IF, 3IF, 4IF, 5IF, and 6IF)
of 28 ophthalmologic journals were computed and compared in accordance
with each *impact factor*'s definition and formula, using the citation
analysis function of the Web of Science (WoS) database. An analysis of
the correlation between impact factors with different citation time
windows and peer-reviewed scores was carried out.
Results
Although *impact factor* values with different citation time windows
were different, there was a high level of correlation between them when
it came to evaluating journals. In the current study, for ophthalmologic
journals' impact factors with different time windows in 2013, 3IF and
4IF seemed the ideal ranges for comparison, when assessed in relation to
peer-reviewed scores. In addition, the 3-year and 4-year windows were
quite consistent with the cited peak age of documents published by
ophthalmologic journals.
Research Limitations
Our study is based on ophthalmology journals and we only analyze the
impact factors with different citation time window in 2013, so it has
yet to be ascertained whether other disciplines (especially those with a
later cited peak) or other years would follow the same or similar
patterns.
Originality/Value
We designed the survey questionnaire ourselves, specifically to assess
the real influence of journals. We used peer-reviewed scores to judge
the journal evaluation effect of impact factors with different citation
time windows. The main purpose of this study was to help researchers
better understand the role of impact factors with different citation
time windows in journal evaluation.

Abstract:
Evaluating the impact of Chemistry Education Research articles has
historically centered on the *impact factor* of the publishing journal.
With the advent of electronic journal indices, it is possible to
determine the impact of individual research articles by the number of
citations it has received. However, in a relatively new discipline, such
as Chemistry Education Research, it is necessary to provide context for
the citation counts, particularly because Chemistry Education Research
faculty are likely evaluated by chemistry faculty in more established
subdisciplines. This study seeks to provide context by reviewing the
citation counts for a sample of 749 Chemistry Education Research
articles published in chemistry education or science education journals
from 2007 through 2013. The number of citations was found to follow a
non-normal distribution and, thus, results are presented using quartiles
to describe the range of citations. The results are delineated by metric
of citations (Web of Science and Google Scholar), year published, and in
terms of established authors.

Abstract:
Purpose To identify and examine the characteristics of the 50 top-cited
articles in medical education.
Method Two searches were conducted in the Web of Knowledge database in
March 2014: a search of medical education journals in the category
"Education, Scientific Discipline" (List A) and a keyword search across
all journals (List B). Articles identified were reviewed for citation
count, country of origin, article type, journal, authors, and
publication year.
Results Both lists included 56 articles, not 50, because articles with
the same absolute number of citations shared the same rank. The majority
of List A articles were published in Academic Medicine (34; 60.7%) and
Medical Education (16; 28.6%). In List B, 27 articles (48.2%) were
published in medical education journals, 19 (33.9%) in general medicine
and surgery journals, and 10 (17.9%) in higher education and educational
psychology journals. Twenty-six articles were included in both lists,
with different rankings. Reviews and articles constituted the majority
of articles; there were only 8 research papers in List A and 13 in List
B. Articles mainly originated from the United States, Canada, the
Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The majority were published from
1979 to 2007. There was no correlation between year and citation count.
Conclusions The finding that over half of List B articles were published
in nonmedical education journals is consistent with medical education's
integrated nature and subspecialty breadth. Twenty of these articles
were among their respective non-medical-education journals' 50 top-cited
papers, showing that medical education articles can compete with
subject-based articles.

Abstract:
This article analyzes shares and rankings of Russian bioscience
publications and journals in international bibliometric databases.
Studying scholarly output, international collaboration, and the share of
Russian papers both in national and international journals enables the
authors to highlight the current state of biological science and
journals in Russia and outline some pronounced trends. A comparative
analysis with the leading countries confirms good representation of
Russian bioscience journals among other international serials. Certain
problems remain unsolved, however: low impact factors,
overrepresentation of national papers, and poor online services. Thus,
Russian publishers should correct their editorial policy to improve
availability and performance of serials.

Abstract:
In entity name disambiguation, performance evaluation of any approach is
difficult. This is due to the fact that correct or actual results are
often not known. Generally for evaluation purpose, three measures namely
precision, recall and f-measure are used. They all are external validity
indices because they need golden standard data. But in Bibliographic
databases like DBLP, Arnetminer, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar,
etc., gold standard data is not easily available and it is very
difficult to obtain this due to the overlapping nature of data. So,
there is a need to use some other matrices for evaluation purpose. In
this paper, some internal cluster validity index based schemes are
proposed for evaluating entity name disambiguation algorithms when
applied on bibliographic data without using any gold standard datasets.
Two new internal validity indices are also proposed in the current paper
for this purpose. Experimental results shown on seven bibliographic
datasets reveal that proposed internal cluster validity indices are able
to compare the results obtained by different methods without prior/gold
standard. Thus the present paper demonstrates a novel way of evaluating
any entity matching algorithm for bibliographic datasets without using
any prior/gold standard information.
