Abstract:
This article uses the Bureau of Applied Social Research's mid-century
book-length panel studiesThe People's Choice (1944), Voting (1954), and
Personal Influence (1955)to identify and illustrate a neglected
phenomenon in the remembered history of social science: mnemonic
multiples. The article describes the way that the Bureau books,
originally published into a post-World War II interdisciplinary social
science milieu, have since come to be remembered along distinct
disciplinary tracks by sociologists, political scientists, and
communication researchers. A contextual analysis of references to the
Bureau studies in the flagship journals of the three disciplines, from
1960 through 2011, provides tentative support for the mnemonic multiples
concept.

Abstract:
A method based on the classical principal component analysis leads to
demonstrate that the role of co-authors should give a h-index measure to
a group leader higher than usually accepted. The method rather easily
gives what is usually searched for, i.e. an estimate of the role (or
"weight") of co-authors, as the additional value to an author papers'
popularity. The construction of the co-authorship popularity, H-matrix
is exemplified and the role of eigenvalues and the main eigenvector
component are discussed. Examples illustrate the points and serve as the
basis for suggesting a generally practical application of the concept.

Title:
Field-normalized citation impact indicators using algorithmically constructed classification systems of science

Abstract:
We study the problem of normalizing citation impact indicators for
differences in citation practices across scientific fields.
Normalization of citation impact indicators is usually done based on a
field classification system. In practice, the Web of Science journal
subject categories are often used for this purpose. However, many of
these subject categories have a quite broad scope and are not
sufficiently homogeneous in terms of citation practices. As an
alternative, we propose to work with algorithmically constructed
classification systems. We construct these classification systems by
performing a large-scale clustering of publications based on their
citation relations. In our analysis, 12 classification systems are
constructed, each at a different granularity level. The number of fields
in these systems ranges from 390 to 73,205 in granularity levels 1-12.
This contrasts with the 236 subject categories in the WoS classification
system. Based on an investigation of some key characteristics of the 12
classification systems, we argue that working with a few thousand fields
may be an optimal choice. We then study the effect of the choice of a
classification system on the citation impact of the 500 universities
included in the 2013 edition of the CWTS Leiden Ranking. We consider
both the MNCS and the PPtop 10% indicator. Globally, for all the
universities taken together citation impact indicators generally turn
out to be relatively insensitive to the choice of a classification
system. Nevertheless, for individual universities, we sometimes observe
substantial differences between indicators normalized based on the
journal subject categories and indicators normalized based on an
appropriately chosen algorithmically constructed classification system.

Abstract:
In this paper, we analyze the adequacy and applicability of readership
statistics recorded in social reference management systems for creating
knowledge domain visualizations. First, we investigate the distribution
of subject areas in user libraries of educational technology researchers
on Mendeley. The results show that around 69% of the publications in an
average user library can be attributed to a single subject area. Then,
we use co-readership patterns to map the field of educational
technology. The resulting visualization prototype, based on the most
read publications in this field on Mendeley, reveals 13 topic areas of
educational technology research. The visualization is a recent
representation of the field: 80% of the publications included were
published within ten years of data collection. The characteristics of
the readers, however, introduce certain biases to the visualization.
Knowledge domain visualizations based on readership statistics are
therefore multifaceted and timely, but it is important that the
characteristics of the underlying sample are made transparent. (C) 2015

Abstract:
Author direct citation analysis (ADCA, also called inter-citation or
cross citation) is a new feasible and applicable technique for exploring
knowledge communication and discovering scientific structure. This study
explored ADCA among prolific, highly cited, and core authors in
information science in China and around the world. The results revealed
the following. (1) The datasets in China and around the world cover
overlapping, but also unique topics. Research subjects on information
science around the world can be divided into three categories and 10
clusters; meanwhile, that in China can be divided into three categories
and 9 clusters. Chinese scholars who are mostly involved in cross
subjects and multi-fields are not as specialized and profound as foreign
scholars. An obvious imbalance exists in the evolution of discipline
structure around the world, indicating the necessity of a synchronous
promotion of research specialty and cross comprehensiveness. Chinese
scholars concentrate more on topics such as competitive intelligence,
information resource management, and information retrieval, and they
focus less on information security and user analysis. (2) Knowledge
communication between active authors is stronger than the knowledge flow
from highly influential authors to active authors around the world;
meanwhile, Chinese researchers tend to adopt the knowledge of
authoritative literature. The knowledge flow through bidirectional
direct citation is related to mutual knowledge communication.
Authoritative scholars are produced when prolific authors cite highly
cited authors. The level of mutual recognition among Chinese scholars
has not reached that among foreign scholars; in the former, less
bidirectional flow of knowledge is involved, and unidirectional flow is
limited to geographical proximity, cooperation, or teacher-student
relationship. (3) In contrast to traditional author co-citation analysis
(ACA), ADCA pays more attention to the mutual interaction among
currently active scholars and to mainly showing the current research
focus. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
In this article, we compare the reception of Spanish sociology by
domestic and international audiences using citation counts as an
indicator of audience interest. We compare papers highly cited in a
national language database with those highly cited in the Web of
Science. We find differences that might prove worrying within a national
research evaluation system that emphasizes publishing in high impact
factor, Web of Science indexed journals. We suggest that in the social
sciences, such an emphasis may induce not simply more research
excellence, but also narrower research agendas with long-term
consequences for the Spanish sociology community.

Abstract:
This article examines how different factors influence the number of
times articles in the five most recognized transportation journals are
cited. The effects of most of the explanatory variables indicating the
characteristics of articles, authors and journals correspond with
earlier studies of citation counts. Special focus in this study is
placed on estimating the relationship between researchers' human capital
or skills and their experience. For the purpose of this study, human
capital is defined as a scientist's ability to conduct research at the
frontier of his or her discipline and is measured by how frequently his
or her research is cited. Experience is measured by counting the number
of their previous scientific articles. Using negative binomial
regression, we find that experience offers a statistically significant
positive effect on the human capital of scientists. However, this effect
diminishes rapidly with the level of experience. This suggests that
young researchers relatively quickly learn the skills and gain the
knowledge necessary to produce high-quality research. (C) 2014 Elsevier

Abstract:
CiteSpace is a visual document analysis software, by which performances
and trends of certain disciplines can be displayed for a given period.
Moreover, the evolution of a frontier research can be explored by such
software as well. This research focuses on the visualization and
quantitative study in bibliographic databases by taking the
university-industry collaboration studies as an example. Using the Web
of Science (WOS), 587 publications and over 30,000 references were
selected for analysis, which produced the following results: (1) Our
method can clearly reveal the key elements of certain disciplines, such
as the largest share of publications, the most frequently cited authors
and journals in the university-industry cooperation research field; (2)
The relationships among the frequently cited authors, references,
journals and keywords can be explained visually in the
university-industry cooperation research field; (3) Of special note is
that the potential problems and evolutionary trends of certain research
fields such as university-industry cooperation can also be ascertained
via our method; (4) In general, according to the case study, our
visualization and quantitative method evolved a new research framework
to evaluate the performance of some research areas. (C) 2014 Elsevier

Abstract:
The transition from further to higher education is marked by a series of
challenges for the new student, not least the requirement to learn the
discourse of academic practice, and referencing as a part of that. By
perceiving what it means to reference, students should also come to
understand what it means to write, including the problematic areas of
authorship and ownership of ideas. Academic writing and paraphrasing are
demanding concepts that require the student writer to enter into the
academic discourse and relinquish their hold on the worlds of a text and
embrace instead the argument behind them, in a form of 'language-game'.
Taking an interpretative, dialogic approach to referencing, the inherent
playfulness of learning is emphasised through the use of Lego, used as a
metaphor for the students' construction of meaning and to exemplify the
discipline of citation and attribution. This paper outlines a method
that metaphorically and literally enables students to construct and make
visible the underlying theoretical philosophy of referencing and
plagiarism by using Lego as a mode of authorship, in the context of the
nature of academic discourse and what it means to write. In addition,
the personal, engaging nature of the activity meant that it would be a
more memorable activity too.

Abstract:
In the quarter of a century since the release of the 1987 Brundtland
Report, sustainable tourism has emerged as the dominant paradigm in
tourism development. However, the debate, discourse, and criticism of
this subfield of tourism research continues. To address such concerns
the purpose of this paper is to explore trends and patterns in
sustainable tourism research over the past 25years. A 25-year
bibliometric analysis was conducted for the four highest ranked journals
in the tourism field. Results indicate that the growth in sustainable
tourism research has been remarkable, with 492 papers published in these
four journals and almost half of these in the last two years of the
analysis. The largest proportion of papers published on sustainable
tourism was case studies, empirical studies, and critical reviews. This
study found that while the theoretical and methodological approaches
appear to have matured over time, the subjects and themes in sustainable
tourism research, with some exceptions, have remained constant. However,
the field is clearly maturing with a move away from definitional and
conceptual papers to papers focused on testing and applying theory
through empirical research.

Abstract:
Objectives: The aims of the present systematic literature analysis were
to evaluate, over a 10-year period, the trend of the proportion of RCT,
SR, MA published on endodontic surgery, and to investigate if the
*impact factor* (IF) of the main endodontic Journals correlates with the
proportion of RCT, SR, MA they publish.
Methods: An electronic search of the RCT, SR and MA published on the
topic "endodontic surgery" from 2001 to 2010 was performed on Medline
and Cochrane CENTRAL database using specific search terms combined with
Boolean operators. Endodontic Journals *impact factor* was retrieved by
the Thomson Scientific database. The proportion of each study type over
the total number of articles on endodontic surgery published per year
was estimated. The correlation between the number of high-evidence level
studies published on the main endodontic Journals and the IF of such
Journals per year was estimated.
Results: From a total of 900 articles published in 2001-2010 on
endodontic surgery, there were 114 studies of high evidence level. A
significant increase of the proportion of either RCT, SR and MA over the
years was found. A modest to unclear correlation was found between the
Journal IF and the number of high-evidence articles published.
Conclusions: There is a positive trend over the years among researchers
in performing studies of good quality in endodontic surgery. The *impact
factor* of endodontic Journals is not consistently influenced by
publication of high-evidence level articles.

Abstract:
The research in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may be beneficial from the
collaboration between countries and researchers. In this study, we aimed
to analyze the scientific research on OSA from 1991 to 2012 and to
evaluate the collaboration networks between countries.
We conducted a bibliometric study in the SCOPUS database. The systematic
search was limited to "articles" published from 1991 to 2012. Articles
are results of original research; we evaluated the following criteria:
number of countries represented, number of authors, number of citations,
and journal names. We determined which countries were the most
productive (more articles published) and the number of collaborations
between these countries. The probability of citation was evaluated using
adjusted odds ratios in a logistic regression analysis.
We found a total of 6,896 OSA-related articles that had been published
in 1,422 journals, 50 % of these articles were concentrated in 41
journals. Of the 74 different countries associated with these articles,
the USA had the highest involvement with 23.8 % of all articles
published. The probability of citation increased by 1.23 times for each
additional author, and by 2.23 times for each additional country
represented; these findings were independent of time since publication,
journal, or the country of the author.
Scientific production on OSA is increasing with limited international
collaboration. The country with the greatest production in this period
(1991-2012) was the USA, which concentrated the international
collaboration network on OSA. We recommended that articles should be
produced with international collaboration to improve the quantity of
scientific publications and their chances of publication in high impact
journals.

Abstract:
It is a perennial interest of the information systems community to
identify a set of information systems journals. The primary approaches
to achieving this identification are surveys of academics, article-level
citation, and senior scholar consensus. An example of the last approach
is the basket of eight journals identified by senior scholars of the
Association for Information Systems (AIS). A different and efficient
approach is afforded by the publication of data from journal Citation
Reports (JCR). This provides aggregate citation data across individual
journals. While the findings provide general empirical support for the
choice of the AIS basket of eight journals, they also indicate that five
additional journals qualify as core information systems journals. Each
of these journals has numerous citations of journals within this set and
low citations of individual journals outside this set. Furthermore, a
network centrality analysis of this set of journals reveals a high
correlation between in-degree centrality and the perceived importance of
journals. Overall, the study demonstrates the suitability of this method
for identifying core journals in a discipline. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:
Background: Given the large number of publications in all fields of
practice, it is essential that clinicians focus on the resources that
provide the highest level of evidence (LOE). We sought to determine the
LOE that exists in the field of pediatrics, present in the general
pediatric as well as high impact clinical literature.
Methods: Clinical pediatric literature, published between April 2011 and
March 2012 inclusive in high-impact clinical journals (HICJ) (New
England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Medical
Association, & The Lancet) and the highest-impact general pediatric
journals (GPJ) (Pediatrics, Journal of Pediatrics, & Archives of
Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine), was assessed. In addition to the LOE,
articles were evaluated on criteria including subspecialty within
pediatrics, number of authors, number of centers, and other parameters.
Eligible level I randomized control trials were appraised using the
Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines.
Results: Of 6511 articles screened, 804 met inclusion criteria (68 in
HICJ and 736 in GPJ). On average, LOE in pediatrics-focused articles
within The Lancet were significantly higher than all GPJ (p < 0.05).
Average CONSORT scores were significantly higher in HICJ vs. GPJ (15.2
vs. 13.6, respectively, p < 0.001).
Conclusions: LOE and quality of randomized control trials within the
pediatric field is highest within HICJ, however, only represent a small
proportion of data published. Following CONSORT criteria, and promoting
studies of high LOE may allow authors and readers to turn to journals
and articles of greater clinical impact.

Abstract:
Background: Hematologic disease affects people of all ages worldwide. In
the past decade, researchers have made great progress in the field of
hematology. In the present study we compared the hematology research
output from China and other countries (USA, Germany, UK, Japan and South
Korea) over the past 10 years and 5 years.
Methods: The related articles were extracted based on the PubMed
database. We recorded the number of publications, clinical trials,
randomized controlled trials, meta-analyses, case reports, reviews,
citations, impact factors, articles in the top 10 journals and most
published journals to assess the quantity and quality of research output
in each region.
Results: A total of 120,641 hematology-related articles were published
from 2004 to 2013. The USA accounted for 27.13% (32,732/120,641) of the
publications, followed by Germany (7,479/120,641; 6.20%), Japan
(6,347/120,641; 5.26%), the UK (5,453/120,641; 4.52%), China
(2,924/120,641; 2.42%) and South Korea (1,413/120,641; 1.17%). The
ranking for cumulative impact factors was as follows: USA; Germany; UK;
Japan; China and South Korea. The median impact factors in the UK, USA,
and Germany were higher than Japan, South Korea, and China.
Interestingly, the median impact factors in the three Asia countries
were similar both in 2004-2013 and 2009-2013. The UK had the highest
percentage of publications in the top 25% of journals, while China
lagged behind and ranked last. When comparing the number of articles in
the top 10 journals, the results were similar to the IF findings.
Germany had the highest number of average citations, while China had the
lowest number of average citation. The status of hematology research
output from the 6 countries in 2009-2013 had little difference from
2004-2013.
Conclusions: Thus, the USA has had a dominant role in hematologic
research in the past 10 years. Overall, the quality of publications in
European countries was better than Asia countries. Although China has
made considerable progress in hematology research, the quality of
research needs improvement.

Abstract:
Background and objectives: The aim of this paper is to analyse the
scientific research on multiple sclerosis using a bibliographic analysis
of articles published during the period 2003-2012.
Methods: The items under study were obtained from the Science Citation
Index-Expanded (SCI-E) database, which was accessed through the Web of
Science (WOS) platform. All records with the term multiple sclerosis' in
the title, plus all articles published in the journals Multiple
Sclerosis and Multiple Sclerosis Journal, were analysed.
Results: A total of 9778 articles, with 160,966 citations, were
retrieved on multiple sclerosis, and the majority of the articles were
published in Multiple Sclerosis Journal (n = 1511). The articles were
published in journals belonging to 135 different subject areas, with the
greatest number of papers falling under the category of clinical
neurology. The countries that published the largest numbers of articles
were the United States (US) (n = 2786), Italy (n = 1263), the United
Kingdom (n = 1147) and Germany (n = 1018). International collaborations
produced 20.4% of the papers.
Conclusions: We emphasise the progressive growth of publications
worldwide, the publication of articles in a wide variety of journals
covering numerous subject areas, and the research leadership of Western
countries, most notably European countries, the US and Canada.

Abstract:
In this paper, drawing on autoethnographic material, we document how we
have been responding to our school's research incentive policy and its
adoption of a new journal ranking process that has resulted in the
marginalization of most accounting journals. Overall, we contribute to
the accounting literature on journal rankings by reflecting on their
impact on researchers' identities. Our personal narratives illustrate
how journal rankings, embedded in a research incentive policy, can
fragment and politicize junior faculties' identities, driving them,
professionally and intellectually, into contradictory directions and
throwing them into academic politics. In terms of sustainability,
identity fragmentation and identity politicization are ambivalent
processes. They can marginalize junior researchers who do not have the
political skills required to play the games of academic politics and
discourage those who feel trapped in identity conflicts. On the other
hand, identity fragmentation and politicization can also stimulate a
deeper form of reflexivity and action. Through increased awareness of
self and the political stakes of the field, junior researchers might be
able to promote greater diversity and respond actively to the needs of a
sustainable accounting research environment. (C) 2014 Published by

Accounting for research quality: Research audits and the journal rankings debate

Abstract:
The question of whether and how research quality should be measured, and
the consequences of research audits such as the UK's Research Excellence
Framework (REF) formerly the RAE - are considered in relation to the
role of journal ratings such as the Association of Business Schools
Academic journal Quality Guide (the ABS Guide). Criticism of the ABS
Guide has distracted attention from the results of successive RAEs,
where the panel for Business and Management has been one of the most
selective in its allocation of the highest grades, especially when
compared with the neighbouring field of Economics. If the ABS Guide had
been used to grade outputs submitted for Business and Management in the
RAE 2008 then many more outputs would have received the highest grades,
especially in accounting where outputs from journals such as Critical
Perspectives on Accounting, which are highly rated in the ABS Guide,
appear to have been downgraded by the RAE panel. The alleged bias
against accounting in the ABS Guide rests on a particular interpretation
of citation impact factors for journals, and a narrow definition of
subject fields. Critics of the ABS Guide would be better advised to
direct their attention to scrutinizing the results of the REF and
considering whether it provides an adequate research ranking for UK
business schools. 15% of all full time students in the UK study business
and management, including accounting and finance, but only 6.7% of the
full time equivalent research active staff submitted in the RAE 2008
were in business and management, or accounting and finance. Research
audits are therefore forcing the separation of teaching from research in
UK business schools. With an estimated ratio of 71 full time students
per research active faculty member in UK business schools, it may be
time to consider a more appropriate, inclusive, and economical form of
ranking for research in business and management. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:
In this paper we challenge the defence of the ABS Guide offered by its
authors (Rowlinson et al.). We direct critical attention to its various
uses, including as an inappropriate surrogate for assessing the quality
of published work without it having to be read; the taking of decisions
about which staff to include in research quality assessments, such as
the UK's REF; and, its use by promotions and appointment panels within
business schools. The Guide offers a one size fits all formula for
estimating the quality of journal articles and journals. This approach
disadvantages emergent journals and areas of interest. It contributes to
a wider debasement of academic culture whereby business schools and
academics are encouraged to over-focus on issues of status and league
table positioning for their own sake, rather than address important
issues of concern to our wider society. Consequently, we urge its
withdrawal. Failing that, we suggest that it should be ignored by
business schools, and regarded as a quaint but dangerous experiment that
it would be wise to consign to our past. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All

Field-normalized *citation* impact indicators using algorithmically constructed classification systems of science

Abstract:
Purpose: The goal is to identify the features of top-rated gold open
access (OA) journals by testing seven main variables: languages,
countries, years of activity and years in the DOAJ repository,
publication fee, the field of study, whether the journal has been
launched as OA or converted, and the type of publisher.
Sample: A sample of 1910 gold OA journals has been obtained by combining
Scopus SJR 2012, the DOAJ, and data provided by previous studies
(Solomon, 2013).
Method: We have divided the SJR index into quartiles for all journals'
subject areas. First, we show descriptive statistics by combining
quartiles based on their features. Then, after having converted the
quartiles into a dummy variable, we test it as a dependent variable in a
binary logistic regression.
Contribute: This work contributes empirically to better understanding
the gold OA efficacy of data analysis, which may be helpful in improving
journals' rankings in the areas where this is still a struggle.
Findings: Significant results have been found for all variables, except
for the types of publishers, and for born or converted journals. (C)

(2) Knowledge
communication between active authors is stronger than the knowledge flow
from highly influential authors to active authors around the world;
meanwhile, Chinese researchers tend to adopt the knowledge of
authoritative literature.

Abstract:
This study explores the connections between social and usage metrics
(altmetrics) and bibliometric indicators at the author level. It studies
to what extent these indicators, gained from academic sites, can provide
a proxy for research impact. Close to 10,000 author profiles belonging
to the Spanish National Research Council were extracted from the
principal scholarly social sites: ResearchGate, Academia.edu and
Mendeley and academic search engines: Microsoft Academic Search and
Google Scholar Citations. Results describe little overlapping between
sites because most of the researchers only manage one profile (72%).
Correlations point out that there is scant relationship between
altmetric and bibliometric indicators at author level. This is due to
the almetric ones are site-dependent, while the bibliometric ones are
more stable across web sites. It is concluded that altmetrics could
reflect an alternative dimension of the research performance, close,
perhaps, to science popularization and networking abilities, but far
from citation impact. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The h-index has been shown to increase in many cases mostly because of
citations to rather old publications. This inertia can be circumvented

Abstract:
Aims: To track citation patterns in ophthalmic journals and contrast
them with major medical and surgical journals from 1997 to 2009. In
addition, we want to familiarize the ophthalmic community with
bibliometrics indices. Materials and Methods: Data retrieved from
Institute for Scientific Information and related websites include 2-year
journal *impact factor* JIF, 5-year impact, Eigenfactor score, H-factor,
Article Influence score, and SCImago factor. Results: JIF rose steadily
around 10% annually in ophthalmic journals, and likewise for major
medical and surgical journals. JIF correlated with recent bibliometric
indicators like 5-year impact, H index, and SCImago factor but not with
Eigenfactor. Ophthalmic journals publishing reviews, basic science, or
large volume on broad range of topics ranked at the top for JIF, while
subspecialty journals tended to have low JIF. JIF of subspecialty
journal Retina rose from 0.740 (rank 23) in 2000 to 3.088 in 2007 (rank
6). Conclusions: JIF tends to rise annually by 10% in medical, surgical,
and ophthalmic fields. Journals publishing reviews, basic science, or
large volume on broad range of topics rank at the top for JIF. The rapid
rise of JIF for Retina unlike other subspecialties that stayed status
quo is multifactorial: Change in editorial policies (introduction of
review articles and omission of case reports) and technological advances
in the retinal field.

Abstract:
Lotkaian informetrics is the framework most often used to study
statistical distributions in the production and usage of information.
Although Lotkaian distributions are traditionally used to characterize
the Information Production Process (IPP), we have shown in a previous
article that the IPP can successfully be studied using the effort
function - the latter having been initially introduced to define the
Exponential Informetric Process (EIP). These themes continue to be
developed in this article, in which we present a necessary and
sufficient condition for the existence of the EIP. Our current approach
is similar to the one used to study IPPs. Inverse power and exponential
distributions serve to illustrate the results obtained in the context of
an EIP. Numerical examples are discussed. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All

Abstract:
This essay reviews both the scholarly output and *impact factor* of
Spanish research institutions in the Arts & Humanities Citation Index
(A&HCI) database, managed by the Thomson-Reuters Web of Science. Based
on a bibliometric analysis of a range of variables it has been possible
to identify those institutions with the best performance indicators, the
journals publishing the most articles, the most productive areas of
research, and other relevant data on publishing patterns in the
Humanities. The study reveals that the most productive Spanish
institutions in the Humanities are the same as those that lead the
performance figures in other areas; it also highlights the outstanding
production of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).

Abstract:
Objective: To reveal technological development and innovative capacity
in the field of medical radiation diagnosis device based on bibliometric
analysis of international patents. Methods: The study searched and
retrieved international patents in the field of medical radiation
diagnosis device from THOMSON INNOVATION DATABASE for quantitative
analysis of patent distribution by country and by institutions with
regard to number of patent, annual development, citation index and
technological hotspots. Results: The number of global patent application
in the field of medical radiation diagnosis kept decreasing, but the
number of patents applied by China and Korea kept on the rise year by
year. US, JAPAN, EUROPE and CHINA are main suppliers of medical
radiation diagnosis patents. The top 10 institutions applied half of
total medical radiation diagnosis patents in the world. The top 3
institutions, SIEMENS, PHILIPS and GE, applied nearly 30% (27.9%) of
total medical radiation diagnosis patents in the world. FUJI FILM,
TOSHIBA and OLYMPUS were considered to possess development potentials
due to their high development index. Conclusion: The number of global
radiation diagnosis patents keeps decreasing in the past decade, but
CHINA has R& D and manufacturing potentials. Radiation diagnosis using
Xrays, NMR diagnosis and radiation diagnosis using nuclear radiation are
technical hotspots in the field of medical radiation diagnosis device.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the diverse scientific careers of researchers in
order to understand the key factors that could lead to a successful
career. Essentially, we intend to answer some specific questions
pertaining to a researcher's scientific career - What are the local and
the global dynamics regulating a researcher's decision to select a new
field of research at different points of her entire career? What are the
suitable quantitative indicators to measure the diversity of a
researcher's scientific career? We propose two entropy-based metrics to
measure a researcher's choice of research topics. Experiments with large
computer science bibliographic dataset reveal that there is a strong
correlation between the diversity of the career of a researcher and her
success in scientific research in terms of the number of citations. We
observe that while most of the researchers are biased toward either
adopting diverse research fields or concentrating on very few fields, a
majority of the prominent researchers tend to follow a typical
"scatter-gather" policy - although their entire careers are immensely
diverse with different types of fields selected at different time
periods, they remain focused primarily in at most one or two fields at
any particular time point of their career. Finally, we propose a
stochastic model which, quite accurately, mimics the notion of field
selection process observed in the real publication dataset. (C) 2014
