Abstract:

Social inequality is traditionally measured by the Gini-index (g). The

g-index takes values from 0 to 1 where g = 0 represents complete

equality and g = 1 represents complete inequality. Most of the estimates

of the income or wealth data indicate the g value to be widely dispersed

across the countries of the world: g values typically range from 0.30 to

0.65 at a particular time (year). We estimated similarly the Gini-index

for the citations earned by the yearly publications of various academic

institutions and the science journals. The ISI web of science data

suggests remarkably strong inequality and universality (g = 0.70 +/-

0.07) across all the universities and institutions of the world, while

for the journals we find g = 0.65 +/- 0.15 for any typical year. We

define a new inequality measure, namely the k-index, saying that the

cumulative income or citations of (1 - k) fraction of people or papers

exceed those earned by the fraction (k) of the people or publications

respectively. We find, while the k-index value for income ranges from

0.60 to 0.75 for income distributions across the world, it has a value

around 0.75 +/- 0.05 for different universities and institutions across

the world and around 0.77 +/- 0.10 for the science journals. Apart from

above indices, we also analyze the same institution and journal citation

data by measuring Pietra index and median index. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to conduct a bibliographic investigation

and meta-analysis of the full body of social media scholarship produced

over eight years, since the domain's emergence in 2004. A total of 610

journal and conference papers were carefully reviewed and subjected to

bibliometric and meta-analysis techniques. A number of research

questions pertaining to country, institutional, and individual

productivity, as well as research design and data practices in the

social media field, were proposed and answered. Our results reveal two

main challenges faced by the field. First, the social media domain

displays limited intellectual diversity in terms of productive and

impactful actors-individual, institutions, and countries-as well as

publications that have hitherto skewed the domain's focus in a limited

direction. Second, the research design approaches and data practices

characterizing the domain seem to reflect methodological singularity

characterized by a strong tendency for cross-sectional,

individual-level, survey or case-based studies. Furthermore, speculative

and anecdotal evidence, based on personal opinions and armchair

hypotheses, is extremely widespread and stand in the way of the domain's

methodological and theoretical advancement. These challenges not only

help to improve one's understanding of the identity and intellectual

core of social media as a distinct scientific field but can also further

prompt academic debate and careful (re)examination of the domain's

scholarly practices and assumptions to ensure its future advancement in

the most productive manner.

Abstract:

Scientific journals may incur scientific error if articles are tainted

by research misconduct. While some journals' ethical policies,

especially those on conflicts of interest, have improved over recent

years, with some adopting a uniform approach, only around half of

biomedical journals, principally those with higher impact factors,

currently have formal misconduct policies, mainly for handling

allegations. Worryingly, since a response to allegations would

reasonably require an a priori definition, far fewer journals have

publicly available definitions of misconduct. While some journals and

editors' associations have taken significant steps to prevent and detect

misconduct and respond to allegations, the content, visibility of and

access to these policies varies considerably. In addition, while the

lack of misconduct policies may prompt and maintain a de novo approach

for journals, potentially causing stress, publication delays and even

legal disputes, the lack of uniformity may be a matter of contention for

research stakeholders such as editors, authors and their institutions,

and publishers. Although each case may need an individual approach, I

argue that posting highly visible, readily accessible, comprehensive,

consistent misconduct policies could prevent the publication of

fraudulent papers, increase the number of retractions of already

published papers and, perhaps, reduce research misconduct. Although

legally problematic, a concerted approach, with sharing of information

between editors, which is clearly explained in journal websites, could

also help. Ideally, journals, editors' associations, and publishers

should seek consistency and homogenise misconduct policies to maintain

public confidence in the integrity of biomedical research publications.

Abstract:

Real-world networks may exhibit a detachment phenomenon determined by

the canceling of previously existing connections. We discuss a tractable

extension of the Yule model to account for this feature. Analytical

results are derived and discussed both asymptotically and for a finite

number of links. Comparison with the original model is performed in the

supercritical case. The first-order asymptotic tail behavior of the two

models is similar but differences arise in the second-order term. We

explicitly refer to world wide web modeling and we show the agreement of

the proposed model on very recent data. However, other possible network

applications are also mentioned.

Abstract:

In a variety of open source software projects, we document a superlinear

growth of production intensity (R similar to c(beta)) as a function of

the number of active developers c, with a median value of the exponent

beta similar or equal to 4/3, with large dispersions of beta from

slightly less than 1 up to 3. For a typical project in this class,

doubling of the group size multiplies typically the output by a factor

2(beta)=2.5, explaining the title. This superlinear law is found to hold

for group sizes ranging from 5 to a few hundred developers. We propose

two classes of mechanisms, interaction-based and large deviation, along

with a cascade model of productive activity, which unifies them. In this

common framework, superlinear productivity requires that the involved

social groups function at or close to criticality, or in a

"superradiance" mode, in the sense of the appearance of a cooperative

process and order involving a collective mode of developers defined by

the build up of correlation between the contributions of developers. In

addition, we report the first empirical test of the renormalization of

the exponent of the distribution of the sizes of first generation events

into the renormalized exponent of the distribution of clusters resulting

from the cascade of triggering over all generation in a critical

branching process in the non-meanfield regime. Finally, we document a

size effect in the strength and variability of the superlinear effect,

with smaller groups exhibiting widely distributed superlinear exponents,

some of them characterizing highly productive teams. In contrast, large

groups tend to have a smaller superlinearity and less variability.

Abstract:

The number of citations that a published article has received reflects

the importance that paper has on that area of practice. In hand surgery,

it is unknown which journal articles are cited most frequently. The

purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the characteristics of

the top 100 papers in the field of hand surgery. The 100 most cited

papers were identified in the following journals; the Journal of Hand

Surgery (American volume), the Journal of Hand Surgery (European

volume), the Journal of Hand Surgery (British and European volume), The

Scandinavian Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive and Hand Surgery,

Hand Clinics, and the Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery. The

articles were ranked in order of the number of citations received. These

classic 100 papers were analyzed for article type, their journal

distribution, as well as geographic and institutional origin.

Abstract:

This paper proposes the application of the three main Bibliometrics

laws-Lotka, Zipf, and Bradford- to address the following questions: (i)

How to be sure of the quality of publishers and contents in scholarly

publishing, and (ii) How to determine content reliability. Our main goal

is to evaluate the visibility of Transinformacao, a Brazilian scholarly

journal in the information science area, according to its productivity,

citation counts, and performance indicators. This study focusses on the

concepts of Bibliometrics and Scholarly Journals, presenting a brief

history of scholarly publishing and its accessibility in Brazil, as well

as the software tools used in this work. This is an exploratory

documentary study, based on descriptive mixed methods (i.e., both

qualitative and quantitative), that analyzes 24 years of Transinformacao

issues, from its first edition in 1989 to 2011. Descriptive statistics

tables are used to show the results obtained from analyses carried out

with Publish or perish, Microsoft Excel, and Web of science Citespace

tools.

Abstract:

This article presents a study of the average number of excess citations

of papers in the h-core, denoted as e(2)/h and the ratio between the

e-area and the h-area, denoted as e(2)/h(2). Real-world citation data

from different countries are studied. It is found that at the country

level, a small set of publications generate a disproportionately large

amount of citations. Although different countries have different

e(2)/h(2) values in different fields, average e(2)/h(2) values are all

above 1. The e(2)/h values vary widely between fields, reflecting the

general citation density in these fields. For cumulative data e(2)/h(2)

and e(2)/h values each converge quickly. Neither a shifted Zipf nor an

exponential model could fit the data.

Abstract: Experts have more difficulty identifying reverse salients in R&D because of increasing technological complexity and a shortened technology lifecycle. As an alternative, we suggest a new and systematic method of identifying and forecasting reverse salients using QED (quality function deployment), bibliometric analysis, and TIA (trend impact analysis). QED allows users to systematically identify and prioritize reverse salients. An integration of QFD, bibliometric analysis, and TIA makes it possible to specify key performance indicators of reverse salient in order to identify the performance gap between current and market-required performance and to make a probabilistic forecast about when reverse salients will be corrected. Our method will help managers identify a top priority reverse salient, forecast its future, and thus make better R&D decisions with regard to market requirements. A carbon nanotube biosensor technology is used as an example. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:

Experts have more difficulty identifying reverse salients in R&D because

of increasing technological complexity and a shortened technology

lifecycle. As an alternative, we suggest a new and systematic method of

identifying and forecasting reverse salients using QED (quality function

deployment), bibliometric analysis, and TIA (trend impact analysis). QED

allows users to systematically identify and prioritize reverse salients.

An integration of QFD, bibliometric analysis, and TIA makes it possible

to specify key performance indicators of reverse salient in order to

identify the performance gap between current and market-required

performance and to make a probabilistic forecast about when reverse

salients will be corrected. Our method will help managers identify a top

priority reverse salient, forecast its future, and thus make better R&D

decisions with regard to market requirements. A carbon nanotube

biosensor technology is used as an example. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All

Abstract:

In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of

Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Totosy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia

discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry.

The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double

appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to

have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back

to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price

inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university

libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by

what the authors term as the "prestige multiplier effect" and the

"prestige crowd-out effect" which means the tendency for libraries to

cut small publishers as large publishers raise prices because large

publishers are more prestigious. To date, the usage of electronic

journals has not changed this general model. Totosy de Zepetnek and Jia

argue that in order to progress towards a more equitable model of

knowledge management allowing for the dissemination of knowledge

globally and against the "colonialism of knowledge" a change in attitude

and practices is required not only by publishers, but also by academics.

Once perception changes and electronic journals obtain prestige, the

publishing of scholarship electronically will replace or will be at

least parallel to the prestige of print journals.

Abstract:

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong disability for which

prevalence rates continue to increase. Persons with ASD vary widely in

both severity of disability and services required. Therefore it is

important to identify trends in research and evaluate progress in the

field. The current study uses a journal analysis to evaluate research

over a 12 year period in three prominent autism focused research

journals: Focus on Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Autism:

The International Journal of Research and Practice, and Journal of

Autism and Developmental Disorders. Findings include identification of

trends in research designs, sample characteristics, and interventions.

Abstract:

Readers and authors who value the benefits of open access scholarship do

so for a variety of reasons: it is convenient to access scholarly

materials employing a Google search; there is the opportunity of being

cited more frequently; and alternative metrics show added value.

Traditional impact factors primarily focus on classic bibliometrics,

typically not of value to the Humanities, open access journal articles,

multiple-authored articles, or authors writing in a non-English

language. New impact factors are under development to satisfy the need

to exemplify the open access research advantage. Measuring institutional

repository value stems from a variety of non-traditional processes,

including faculty post-print and student ETD deposits, a process

improvement approach, and value-chain/value-stream mapping.
