Title:
A proposal for a novel *impact factor* as *an* alternative *to* the JCR *impact factor*

Abstract:
One disadvantage of the JCR *impact factor*, the most commonly used
assessment tool for ranking and evaluating scientific journals, is its
inability in distinguishing among different shapes of citation
distribution curves, leading to unfair evaluation of journals in some
cases. This paper aims to put forward an alternative *impact factor*
(IF') that can properly reflect citation distributions. The two impact
factors are linearly and positively correlated, and have roughly the
same order of magnitude. Because of the ability of IF' in distinguishing
among different shapes of citation distribution curves, IF' may properly
reflect the academic performance of a scientific journal in a way that
is different from the JCR *impact factor* with some unique features that
reward journals with highly cited papers. Therefore, it is suggested
that IF' could be used to complement the JCR *impact factor*.

Abstract:
The number of citations a publication receives can be used as a
surrogate for the impact that article has made on its discipline. This
study identifies and characterizes the most cited articles in pediatric
neurosurgical journals as of April 2013.
We examined four clinical pediatric neurosurgery journals. The 100 most
cited articles in the overall literature and the top 50 articles from
2002 to 2012 were examined. The following information was recorded for
each article: number of authors, country of origin, citation-count
adjusted for number of years in print, topic, and level of evidence.
The 100 most cited articles appeared in three of the four journals:
Child's Brain, Pediatric Neurosurgery and Child's Nervous System.
Publication dates ranged from 1975 to 2006; 21 were prospective studies,
64 were retrospective, and 81 were either class 4 evidence (case series,
n = 70) or review articles (n = 11). Citations ranged from 65 to 193
(mean of 90); average adjusted citation count per year was 4.5. The 50
most cited articles from 2002 to 2012 appeared in Child's Nervous
System, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and JNS: Pediatrics. Four were
prospective studies, 25 were retrospective, and 38 of the total (76 %)
were either class 4 evidence (n = 24) or review articles (n = 14).
Citations ranged from 41 to 125 (mean of 54); average adjusted citation
count per year was 6.3.
An original paper in pediatric neurosurgery having a total citation
count of 50 or more, and an average citation count of 5 per year or more
can be considered a high impact publication.

Abstract:
PLOS ONE (formerly PLoS ONE) is an international open access online
journal published by the Public Library of Science. The periodical
covers all science and medicine categories and has published as many as
28,852 documents from 2007 to 2011. PLOS ONE will be used to show the
range of journal metrics and informetric methods regarding validity,
practicability and informative value. To assess this data as
specifically as possible and to address all relevant factors, the
evaluation is split into five dimensions, each of which involves
distinct metrics. The five dimensions are journal output, journal
content, journal perception, journal citations and journal management.
Each of them is pointed out in the process of the analyses, and all
significant evaluation results are presented. The results show that PLOS
ONE has experienced an enormous development. Because of a relatively low
rejection rate of 31%, its openness towards a multitude of different
research areas, an internationally large peer review community, and its
open access, a plurality of documents can be published in comparison
with a print-journal or other online periodicals. The results of the
evaluation indicate that PLOS ONE should be assessed from numerous
perspectives because there are a variety of indicators beyond the
*impact factor* that can be made use of in order to evaluate
exhaustively the standing of the journal as well as its prestige and
impact.

Abstract:
Citation indexes such as journal *impact factor* are increasingly used
to evaluate the quality of a scholarly work and/or assess one's
scientific contributions. However, this simplistic approach has
increasingly been refuted with publication gaming and incorrect
applications to rank one's academic significance. These indexes are
being game not only by researchers but also subtly by journal editors.
Although the attention drawn from the public pertaining to such
misbehaviors from editors is limited, the associated implications cannot
be undermined. In this article, the focus will be on the motivations,
impacts, and lessons learnt from how single highly cited article can
have on the reactions from and the reputation of two academic journals:
Folia Phoniatrica et Logopaedica and Acta Crystallographica Section A.
For the former, it adopted an unconventional approach to improve its
prominence in the field while the latter reiterates the correct and the
original intent of citation indexes, as well as the importance of good
editorial governance. From these incidents, few considerations are
proposed to assist in minimising the recurrence of possible publication
gaming in the editorial process. However, the inherent ethical values of
an individual should still take precedence of any preventive measure.

Abstract:
This study assesses whether eleven factors associate with higher impact
research: individual, institutional and international collaboration;
journal and reference impacts; abstract readability; reference and
keyword totals; paper, abstract and title lengths. Authors may have some
control over these factors and hence this information may help them to
conduct and publish higher impact research. These factors have been
previously researched but with partially conflicting findings. A
simultaneous assessment of these eleven factors for Biology and
Biochemistry, Chemistry and Social Sciences used a single negative
binomial-logit hurdle model estimating the percentage change in the mean
citation counts per unit of increase or decrease in the predictor
variables. The journal *Impact Factor* was found to significantly
associate with increased citations in all three areas. The impact and
the number of cited references and their average citation impact also
significantly associate with higher article citation impact. Individual
and international teamwork give a citation advantage in Biology and
Biochemistry and Chemistry but inter-institutional teamwork is not
important in any of the three subject areas. Abstract readability is
also not significant or of no practical significance. Among the article
size features, abstract length significantly associates with increased
citations but the number of keywords, title length and paper length are
insignificant or of no practical significance. In summary, at least some
aspects of collaboration, journal and document properties significantly
associate with higher citations. The results provide new and
particularly strong statistical evidence that the authors should
consider publishing in high impact journals, ensure that they do not
omit relevant references, engage in the widest possible team working,
when appropriate, and write extensive abstracts. A new finding is that
whilst is seems to be useful to collaborate and to collaborate
internationally, there seems to be no particular need to collaborate
with other institutions within the same country. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:
For comparisons of citation impacts across fields and overtime,
bibliometricians normalize the observed citation counts with reference
to an expected citation value. Percentile-based approaches have been
proposed as a non-parametric alternative to parametric central-tendency
statistics. Percentiles are based on an ordered set of citation counts
in a reference set, whereby the fraction of papers at or below the
citation counts of a focal paper is used as an indicator for its
relative citation impact in the set. In this study, we pursue two
related objectives: (I) although different percentile-based approaches
have been developed, an approach is hitherto missing that satisfies a
number of criteria such as scaling of the percentile ranks from zero
(all other papers perform better) to 100 (all other papers perform
worse), and solving the problem with tied citation ranks unambiguously.
We introduce a new citation-rank approach having these properties,
namely P100; (2) we compare the reliability of P100 empirically with
other percentile-based approaches, such as the approaches developed by
the SCImago group, the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS),
and Thomson Reuters (InCites), using all papers published in 1980 in
Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS). How accurately can the different
approaches predict the long-term citation impact in 2010 (in year 31)
using citation impact measured in previous time windows (years 1-30)?
The comparison of the approaches shows that the method used by InCites
overestimates citation impact (because of using the highest percentile
rank when papers are assigned to more than a single subject category)
whereas the SCImago indicator shows higher power in predicting the
long-term citation impact on the basis of citation rates in early years.
Since the results show a disadvantage in this predictive ability for
P100 against the other approaches, there is still room for further
improvements. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
We apply the knowledge discovery process to the mapping of current
topics in a particular field of science. We are interested in how
articles form clusters and what are the contents of the found clusters.
A framework involving web scraping, keyword extraction, dimensionality
reduction and clustering using the diffusion map algorithm is presented.
We use publicly available information about articles in high-impact
journals. The method should be of use to practitioners or scientists who
want to overview recent research in a field of science. As a case study,
we map the topics in data mining literature in the year 2011. (C) 2013

Abstract:
Citation counting can be used to evaluate the impact an article has made
on its discipline. This study characterizes the most cited articles
related to clinical pediatric neurosurgery as of July 2013.
A list of search terms was computed using Thomson Reuters Web of
ScienceA (R) (WOS) to capture the 100 most cited articles in the overall
literature and the top 50 articles from 2002 to 2012 related to clinical
pediatric neurosurgery from non-dedicated pediatric neurosurgical
journals. The following information was recorded for each article:
number of authors, country of origin, citation count adjusted for number
of years in print, topic, and level of evidence.
The 100 most cited articles appeared in 44 journals. Publication dates
ranged from 1986 to 2008; two were class 1 evidence, nine class 2, 26
class 3, and 52 class 4. Citations ranged from 90 to 321 (mean = 131);
average time-adjusted citation count was 10. The 50 most cited articles
from 2002 to 2012 appeared in 31 journals; four were class 2 evidence,
15 class 3, and 21 class 4. Citations ranged from 68 to 245 (mean =
103); average time-adjusted citation count was 13.
Overall, papers from non-pediatric neurosurgical journals had higher
citation counts and improved level of evidence grades compared to
articles from pediatric neurosurgical periodicals. An original paper
related to clinical pediatric neurosurgery in a non-pediatric
neurosurgical journal having a total citation count of 100-150 or more
and an average citation count of 10-15 per year or more can be

Publication dates ranged from 1975 to 2006; 21 were prospective studies,
64 were retrospective, and 81 were either class 4 evidence (case series,
n = 70) or review articles (n = 11). Citations ranged from 65 to 193
(mean of 90); average adjusted citation count per year was 4.5. The 50
most cited articles from 2002 to 2012 appeared in Child's Nervous
System, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and JNS: Pediatrics. Four were
prospective studies, 25 were retrospective, and 38 of the total (76 %)
were either class 4 evidence (n = 24) or review articles (n = 14).
Citations ranged from 41 to 125 (mean of 54); average adjusted citation
count per year was 6.3.
An original paper in pediatric neurosurgery having a total citation
count of 50 or more, and an average citation count of 5 per year or more
can be considered a high impact publication.

Abstract:
During 1991-2000, Japan contribution to the top general medicine
journals was very small although the contribution to the top basic
science journals was sizeable. However, it has not been examined whether
the contribution to the top general medicine and basic science journals
has changed during the last decade (2001-2010). The objective of this
study was to compare Japan representation in high-impact general
medicine and basic science journals between the years 1991-2000 and
2001-2010. We used PubMed database to examine the frequency of articles
originated from Japan and published in 7 high-impact general medicine
and 6 high-impact basic science journals. Several Boolean operators were
used to connect name of the journal, year of publication and
corresponding authors' affiliation in Japan. Compared to the 19912000
decade, Japan contribution to the top general medicine journals did not
increase over the 2001-2010 period (0.66% vs. 0.74%, P = 0.255).
However, compared to the same period, its contribution to the top basic
science journals increased during 2001-2010 (2.51% vs. 3.60%, P <
0.001). Japan representation in basic science journals showed an upward
trend over the 1991-2000 period (P < 0.001) but remained flat during
2001-2010 (P = 0.177). In contrast, the trend of Japan representation in
general medicine journals remained flat both during 1991-2000 (P =
0.273) and 2001-2010 (P = 0.073). Overall, Japan contribution to the top
general medicine journals has remained small and unchanged over the last
two decades. However, top basic science journals had higher Japan
representation during 2001-2010 compared to 1991-2000.

Abstract:
As a leading producer of scientific publications on the African
continent, South Africa has made remarkable progress. However, attempts
are yet to be made to comprehend the empirical reality of scientific
production in South Africa. One way to do this is to analyse specific
science disciplines (such as the natural sciences), publication outputs
and their features. A bibliometric study was undertaken of the
publication trends and patterns of South African researchers in the
natural sciences from 1975 to 2005 (choosing selected sample years),
using the Thomson Reuters' Web of Knowledge database of selected indexed
natural science journals. Characteristics of natural science
publications, such as the trends over the years, were revealed as well
as the collaborative dimensions involved in the production of scientific
papers in these disciplines in South Africa. The connection between
collaboration and publication, as well as between collaboration and
sectors of authors was evident. The key findings of this study were that
authors were based mostly in universities and were collaborative in
their research endeavours. In addition, the participation of
international collaborators has increased.

Abstract:
In this paper we deal with the problem of aggregating numeric sequences
of arbitrary length that represent e.g. citation records of scientists.
Impact functions are the aggregation operators that express as a single
number not only the quality of individual publications, but also their
author's productivity.
We examine some fundamental properties of these aggregation tools. It
turns out that each impact function which always gives indisputable
valuations must necessarily be trivial. Moreover, it is shown that for
any set of citation records in which none is dominated by the other, we
may construct an impact function that gives any a priori-established
authors' ordering. Theoretically then, there is considerable room for
manipulation in the hands of decision makers.
We also discuss the differences between the impact function-based and
the multicriteria decision making-based approach to scientific quality
management, and study how the introduction of new properties of impact
functions affects the assessment process. We argue that simple
mathematical tools like the h- or g-index (as well as other bibliometric
impact indices) may not necessarily be a good choice when it comes to
assess scientific achievements. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

In this paper, we develop a novel methodology within the IDCP measuring
framework for comparing normalization procedures based on different
classification systems of articles into scientific disciplines. Firstly,
we discuss the properties of two rankings, based on a graphical and a
numerical approach, for the comparison of any pair of normalization
procedures using a single classification system for evaluation purposes.
Secondly, when the normalization procedures are based on two different
classification systems, we introduce two new rankings following the
graphical and the numerical approaches. Each ranking is based on a
double test that assesses the two normalization procedures in terms of
the two classification systems on which they depend. Thirdly, we also
compare the two normalization procedures using a third, independent
classification system for evaluation purposes. In the empirical part of
the paper we use: (i) a classification system consisting of 219
sub-fields identified with the Web of Science subject-categories; an
aggregate classification system consisting of 19 broad fields, as well
as a systematic and a random assignment of articles to sub-fields with
the aim of maximizing or minimizing differences across sub-fields; (ii)
four normalization procedures that use the field or sub-field mean
citations of the above four classification systems as normalization
factors; and (iii) a large dataset, indexed by Thomson Reuters, in which
4.4 million articles published in 1998-2003 with a five-year citation
window are assigned to sub-fields using a fractional approach. The
substantive results concerning the comparison of the four normalization
procedures indicate that the methodology can be useful in practice. (C)

Abstract:
The importance of a scientific journal is usually established by
considering the number of citations received by the papers that the
journal publishes. In this way, the number of citations received by a
scientific journal can be considered as a measure of the total
production of the journal. In this paper, in order to obtain measures of
the efficiency in the production process, the approach provided by
stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) is considered, and econometric models
are proposed. These models estimate a frontier production, which is the
maximum achievable number of citations to the journal based on its
resources. The efficiency can then be measured by considering the
difference between the actual production and the estimated frontier.
This approach is applied to the measurement of the productive efficiency
of the journals of the JCR social sciences edition database, which
belong simultaneously to the areas of "economics" and "social sciences,
mathematical methods". (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Networks of networks: a *citation* network analysis of the adoption, use, and adaptation of formal network techniques in archaeology

Abstract:
This article aims to evaluate how a citation network analysis could
contribute to a review of a specific corpus of archaeological
literature, and how the publishing and citation behaviour of
archaeologists affects the use of citation network analysis techniques
for archaeology. It will do this through a case study that aims to trace
the adoption of formal network methods by archaeologists. A review of
the archaeological literature will be confronted with an analysis of a
citation network consisting of 33,556 publications and 42,993 citations.
The results indicate that a citation network analysis succeeds in
quantitatively expressing the intuitive results drawn from the
literature review. It also allows for the archaeological literature to
be re-contextualized in a larger multidisciplinary body of literature.
However, the use of citation network analysis for archaeology is
significantly restricted by the limitations of the available citation
databases, which are still less representative for the humanities and
the social sciences than for the natural sciences. It is suggested that
different disciplines in the humanities require distinct strategies for
citation data collection and analysis.

Abstract:
We address issues concerning what one may learn from how citation
instances are distributed in scientific articles. We visualize and
analyze patterns of citation distributions in the full text of 350
articles published in the Journal of Informetrics. In particular, we
visualize and analyze the distributions of citations in articles that
are organized in a commonly seen four-section structure, namely,
introduction, method, results, and conclusions (IMRC). We examine the
locations of citations to the groundbreaking h-index paper by Hirsch in
2005 and how patterns associated with citation locations evolve over
time. The results show that citations are highly concentrated in the
first section of an article. The density of citations in the first
section is about three times higher than that in subsequent sections.
The distributions of citations to highly cited papers are even more
uneven. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Internationally co-authored papers are known to have more citation
impact than nationally co-authored paper, on average. However, the
question of whether there are systematic differences between pairs of
collaborating countries in terms of the citation impact of their joint
output, has remained unanswered. On the basis of all scientific papers
published in 2000 and co-authored by two or more European countries, we
show that citation impact increases with the geographical distance
between the collaborating counties. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Abstract:
We address the question how citation-based bibliometric indicators can
best be normalized to ensure fair comparisons between publications from
different scientific fields and different years. In a systematic
large-scale empirical analysis, we compare a traditional normalization
approach based on a field classification system with three source
normalization approaches. We pay special attention to the selection of
the publications included in the analysis. Publications in national
scientific journals, popular scientific magazines, and trade magazines
are not included. Unlike earlier studies, we use algorithmically
constructed classification systems to evaluate the different
normalization approaches. Our analysis shows that a source normalization
approach based on the recently introduced idea of fractional citation
counting does not perform well. Two other source normalization
approaches generally outperform the classification-system-based
normalization approach that we study. Our analysis therefore offers
considerable support for the use of source-normalized bibliometric
indicators. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Title:
The Z-index: A geometric representation of productivity and impact which accounts for information in the entire rank-*citation* profile

Abstract:
We present a simple generalization of Hirsch's h-index, Z = root h(2) +
C/root 5, where C is the total number of citations. Z is aimed at
correcting the potentially excessive penalty made by h on a scientist's
highly cited papers, because for the majority of scientists analyzed, we
find the excess citation fraction (C - h(2))/C to be distributed closely
around the value 0.75, meaning that 75% of the author's impact is
neglected. Additionally, Z is less sensitive to local changes in a
scientist's citation profile, namely perturbations which increase h
while only marginally affecting C. Using real career data for 476
physicists careers and 488 biologist careers, we analyze both the
distribution of Z and the rank stability of Z with respect to the Hirsch
index h and the Egghe index g. We analyze careers distributed across a
wide range of total impact, including top-cited physicists and
biologists for benchmark comparison. In practice, the Z-index requires
the same information needed to calculate h and could be effortlessly
incorporated within career profile databases, such as Google Scholar and
ResearcherID. Because Z incorporates information from the entire
publication profile while being more robust than h and g to local
perturbations, we argue that Z is better suited for ranking comparisons
in academic decision-making scenarios comprising a large number of
scientists. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Background: Citation counts for peer-reviewed articles and the *impact
factor* of journals have long been indicators of article importance or
quality. In the Web 2.0 era, growing numbers of scholars are using
scholarly social network tools to communicate scientific ideas with
colleagues, thereby making traditional indicators less sufficient,
immediate, and comprehensive. In these new situations, the altmetric
indicators offer alternative measures that reflect the multidimensional
nature of scholarly impact in an immediate, open, and individualized
way. In this direction of research, some studies have demonstrated the
correlation between altmetrics and traditional metrics with different
samples. However, up to now, there has been relatively little research
done on the dimension and interaction structure of altmetrics.
Objective: Our goal was to reveal the number of dimensions that
altmetric indicators should be divided into and the structure in which
altmetric indicators interact with each other.
Methods: Because an article-level metrics dataset is collected from
scholarly social media and open access platforms, it is one of the most
robust samples available to study altmetric indicators. Therefore, we
downloaded a large dataset containing activity data in 20 types of
metrics present in 33,128 academic articles from the application
programming interface website. First, we analyzed the correlation among
altmetric indicators using Spearman rank correlation. Second, we
visualized the multiple correlation coefficient matrixes with graduated
colors. Third, inputting the correlation matrix, we drew an MDS diagram
to demonstrate the dimension for altmetric indicators. For correlation
structure, we used a social network map to represent the social
relationships and the strength of relations.
Results: We found that the distribution of altmetric indicators is
significantly non-normal and positively skewed. The distribution of
downloads and page views follows the Pareto law. Moreover, we found that
the Spearman coefficients from 91.58% of the pairs of variables indicate
statistical significance at the .01 level. The non-metric MDS map
divided the 20 altmetric indicators into three clusters: traditional
metrics, active altmetrics, and inactive altmetrics. The social network
diagram showed two subgroups that are tied to each other but not to
other groups, thus indicating an intersection between altmetrics and
traditional metric indicators.
Conclusions: Altmetrics complement, and most correlate significantly
with, traditional measures. Therefore, in future evaluations of the
social impact of articles, we should consider not only traditional
metrics but also active altmetrics. There may also be a transfer
phenomenon for the social impact of academic articles. The impact
transfer path has transfer, or intermediate, stations that transport and
accelerate article social impact from active altmetrics to traditional
metrics and vice versa. This discovery will be helpful to explain the
impact transfer mechanism of articles in the Web 2.0 era. Hence,
altmetrics are in fact superior to traditional filters for assessing
scholarly impact in multiple dimensions and in terms of social
structure.

Abstract:
Quantitatively assessing the scientific relevance of a research paper is
challenging for two reasons. Firstly, scientific relevance may change
over time, and secondly, it is unclear how to evaluate a recently
published paper. The temporally averaged paper-specific *impact factor*
is defined as the yearly average of citations to the paper until now
including bonus citations equal to the journal *impact factor* in the
publication year. This new measure subsequently allows relevance
rankings and annual updates of all (i.e. both recent and older)
scientific papers of a department, or even a whole scientific field, on
a more objective basis. It can also be used to assess both the average
and overall time-dependent scientific relevance of researchers in a
specific department or scientific field.

Abstract:
Journals' impact indicators are not comparable among scientific fields
because of systematic differences in publication and citation habits. In
this work, the *impact factor* was decomposed into five independent
variables, as applied to journal category, fields, and areas considered
in the databases of the leading provider of science indicators, Thomson
Reuters. A Principal Component Analysis was employed to find the sources
of the variance and a Cluster Analysis was used to detect similarities.
In spite of systematic differences between disciplines, the principal
components explain 78% of the total variance. From the statistical point
of view, some categories of Science are closer to the Social Sciences
than to Science and vice versa.

Abstract:
Carbon nanotubes are currently one of the most important materials due
to their strong mechanical resistance, light weight, and transport
properties. Since the publication of Ijima's paper on tubular carbon
structures (Iijima, Nature 354:56-58, 1991), approximately 80,000
research articles have been published according to the ISI web of
science (WOS) database, using "carbon nanotube*'' as the search
criterion in the search by topic option. In this work, the development
and impact of nanoscience and nanotechnology (N&N) and carbon nanotubes
on several research areas, journals, specific papers, and emerging
research areas are analyzed and discussed. Considering the production of
papers in these areas from 1997 to 2012, quantitatively speaking, the
People's Republic of China is emerging as the leading country in N&N and
carbon nanotube research, passing the United States of America. WOS data
analysis of nanoscience, nanotechnology, and carbon nanotube research in
developed and developing countries is discussed, and some ideas for
accelerating the progress in these important research areas are
proposed.

Abstract:
As the fact that today is conducted a number of scientific research
works in the field of medicine, it is necessary to define the steps by
which it is carried out to make it universal and to have scientific
value. This paper describes the research methods, study design, the way
in which one should be written, and why it is important to publicize the
same. Special emphasis is placed on scientometrics as the science that
evaluates scientific papers and their citation in the selected sample of
journals. The paper also answers why scientific research works should be
carried out and what kind of satisfaction they provide to the
researcher.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the bibliometric analysis of journal articles
published about two rare diseases that produce mental and behavioural
disorders: Rett Syndrome and CADASIL, during the period 2000-2009.
Furthermore, although Rett mainly affects females and the causes of both
diseases are very different, they have in common that both are genetic
disorders. To carry out the analysis we used two databases, Medline and
SCI - each with its advantages and biases but complementary to each
other - together with a multidimensional analysis methodology in order
to determine the relationship between output about these rare diseases
and the advances in the field of Genetics. The results show a clear
difference in research patterns for the two diseases, but a convergence
on a common factor, genetic influence, although this is more pronounced
in the Rett syndrome. Finally it concludes that the great milestones in
the field of genetics, both specific (mutations in genes that cause
disease) and general (the human genome sequencing), significantly affect
the scientific activity surrounding these rare diseases.

Abstract:
Journals' impact indicators are not comparable among scientific fields
because of systematic differences in publication and citation habits. In
this work, the impact factor was decomposed into five independent
variables, as applied to journal category, fields, and areas considered
in the databases of the leading provider of science indicators, Thomson

Abstract:
This study presents a descriptive analysis of Spanish universities
according to their journal publication profile in five scientific
domains during 2007-2011. Two universities have a similar journal
publication profile, if they publish in a high number of common
journals. This idea led to the possibility of mapping universities and
thus offering an enriched view of the Spanish higher education system.
In order to do so, we analysed the areas of Social Sciences, Exact
Sciences, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences, and Health Sciences.
We also used the centrality indicator of social network analysis to
identify those universities with a greater role in each area; that is,
with a higher number of direct connections with the rest of the
universities. Finally, the application of this methodology within the
context of scientific policy is discussed, for searching for potential
scientific partners.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to present a bibliometric analysis in the
field of operations management, specifically the issue that relates
operational flexibility with business performance during the period
1981-2011. The analysis applies indicators concerning both activity
(quantification of authors, journals or Lotka's Law) and relationships
(citations by author, journal co-citation between authors and co-word
analysis) using the Web of Science's Social Sciences Citation Index as a
data source. The results provided by the activity indicators show that
it is a relatively recent field of study, which verifies compliance with
the Lotka's Law, and where the most productive authors and journals do
not necessarily coincide with the most cited ones. The co-citation
analysis has identified authors of reference in the field. Finally, the
co-word analysis has allowed the identification of the research topics
comprising the area of study and classified into widely developed
issues, specialized peripheral issues, peripheral underdeveloped issues,
and emerging subject matters. These are the most relevant, in that they
identify important current issues that are still poorly developed.

Abstract:
An inverted rank distribution is an infinite sequence of positive sizes
ordered in a monotone increasing fashion. Interlacing together Lorenzian
and oligarchic asymptotic analyses, we establish a macroscopic
classification of inverted rank distributions into five "socioeconomic"
universality classes: communism, socialism, criticality, feudalism, and
absolute monarchy. We further establish that: (i) communism and
socialism are analogous to a "disordered phase", feudalism and absolute
monarchy are analogous to an "ordered phase", and criticality is the
"phase transition" between order and disorder; (ii) the universality
classes are characterized by two critical exponents, one governing the
ordered phase, and the other governing the disordered phase; (iii)
communism, criticality, and absolute monarchy are characterized by sharp
exponent values, and are inherently deterministic; (iv) socialism is
characterized by a continuous exponent range, is inherently stochastic,
and is universally governed by continuous power-law statistics; (v)
feudalism is characterized by a continuous exponent range, is inherently
stochastic, and is universally governed by discrete exponential
statistics. The results presented in this paper yield a universal
macroscopic socioeconophysical perspective of inverted rank
distributions. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
This note presents a simple and locally optimal test statistic for the
Pareto law. The test is based on the Lagrange multiplier principle and
can be computed easily once the maximum likelihood estimator of the
scale parameter of the Pareto density has been obtained. A Monte Carlo
exercise shows the good small sample properties of the test under the
null of the Pareto law and also its power against some sensible and
interesting alternatives. In addition, the proposed test is compared to
a goodness of fit test which is powerful against more or less all
alternatives. Eventually, a simple application to urban economics is
performed.
