"Average" number of citations?

No. I must warn you, though, that impact factor is a very complex measure,
and you better study up on it before applying it. There is a lot of
controversy surrounding this measure, and, if you are applying it for
purposes of evaluating the UIUC faculty, you run the risk of losing your
life. Some chemistry professor may jump out from behind a bush and get
you. You might want go over to the ROTC building to obtain some training
in escape-and-evasion as well as duck-and-roll in case they try a drive-by
shooting. However, I do think that the UIUC faculty is too egocentric to
do a suicide bombing.

I will forward to you something I did for the JASIST on the validity of
total citations impact factor as qualilty measure just to show you what you
are getting into.

Is there a difference between the JCR located at my library and the JCR
available online from ISI?

Impact factor is basically this measure, and it is in the JCR located at
your library. Go talk to a reference librarian. -- SB

This may be a dumb question, but here goes...

Is there a way to use Web of Science or Journal Citation Reports to
determine the average (mean) number of citations for a given journal title,
or for journals within a given subject category?
