[Sigia-l] In-page navigation

Can't remember if I've asked this before, but does anyone have any
examples of content-heavy web sites that eschew conventional left (or
right) navigation bars?
I ask because I'm thinking of proposing a design that has a (clickable)
breadcrumb trail, but no navigation other than box-out style links to
related info within, and at the end of, each page. I feel that it will
work, but need ammo against those that would question my sani^H^H^H^H
genius.
And since design is always about personal opinion in the end, let it be
known that I've always thought conventional left/right nav to be rather
lame. This is somewhat supported by observation in user research, in
which I get the impression most people can't be bothered with it,
preferring instead to look for (and use) links that are in the immediate
context of the content they are thinking about (eg "more like this"
"related links" etc.). But I'm not completely sure.
