Hi,
I'm happy to announce the 2008 edition of "The Web And Beyond", a bi-annual conference organized by Chi Netherlands (formerly SIGCHI.NL) on the business of user experience.
The Web and Beyond: Mobility
(http://www.thewebandbeyond.nl)
The Web is in a state of motion: no longer is it primarily being accessed through PCs, but more and more does it find its way into our phones, our cars, onto the streets and into buildings. And once there, the Web is interacting with us in smarter and richer ways than before. RFID transmitters in a bus stop personalize the maps and advertisements, your car knows today's best way home, your mobile phone suggests the best place to eat tomorrow and your online best friends (all 176 of them) will know that you have been there, way before you have had the chance to tell them.
Mobility traditionally referred to characteristics of devices to handle information, communication and transactions while in a state of motion. What if we place users at the center of attention? What does mobility mean to humans in a state of motion who interact with the technological devices in their surroundings?
The Web and Beyond: Mobility, a conference organized by CHI Netherlands, explores in a 1-day, 3-track program with 4 themes:
- mobile applications
- maps & location based services
- social profiles & rich presence
- ambient intelligence & everyware
The 2006 edition of The Web And Beyond was a great success, with 625 attendees coming together in Amsterdam's historical Tuschinski movie theatre. We had Jared Spool (User Interface Engineering) and Jesse James Garrett (Adaptive Path) as keynote speakers, and Yahoo!'s UI pattern librarian Bill Scott and W3C's Steven Pemberton (co-author of XHTML and CSS) as surpise acts.
This year's theme is Mobility, we've set the date to Thursday, May 22nd and we have found another excellent venue in downtown Amsterdam: The Berlage Exchange (http://en.beursvanberlage.nl/index.php). This year's international keynote speakers are Adam Greenfield (author of Everyware), Christian Lindholm (ex-Yahoo!Mobile, ex-Nokia), Jyri Engestrom (Jaiku/Google) and Ben Cerveny (ex-Flickr, now Playground and Stamen). We also have presentations by Philips, TomTom and The Netherlands' most mobile bank Rabobank.
You will find the full program on our website (http://www.thewebandbeyond.nl) where soon the list of demos and interactive prototypes, showcased during the breaks, will be added. There will be a full-day English spoken track with 1 or 2 English-language sessions at any time. Other sessions will be in Dutch.
The early registration deadline is April 27. I can only say that with prices ranging from the absolute minimum of EUR40 (early students) to an absolute maximum of EUR170 (late non-members) for a full-day, 3-track program, this is great value-for-money.
After April 27, you will pay EUR10 (students, etc.) or EUR40 (everyone else) extra. I suggest you register now and thank me later :-)
Kindest regards,
Peter, Program Chair for The Web And Beyond: Mobility
