But that's the whole point of Joel's argument!

Yes, function calls can be counted, till the cows come home. But what does
that measurement *mean* in a given context? His example starkly points out
the fallacy of this very notion *in practice.* The objection is about
"measurement" being used normatively not so much to evaluate but to *affect*
design -- fraudulently or otherwise. For most companies, that distinction is
lost...along with any hope of effective design.

Because I just took three of the companies you gave as examples of metrics
excellence and showed you that, using the very same approach, they have
failed miserably when it came to Design. You can draw your own conclusions.
