Uh, "doing it right"?? OK, I'll play:

I was incorporating shipping info into a cart for a client. UPS has
an API for calculating shipping costs; UPS also provides a form on
their public site for end users to do the same.

With the exact same input data, the two different interfaces deliver
*different numbers*. I went round and round with UPS "tech support",
who seemed mostly unable to grasp that this was even a problem, for
literally months trying to resolve this. And finally gave up.

So the client didn't use UPS at all.

Oh, yeah, "doing it right". Thrive on!  :-)
