Still in more place than I care to see, for lack of dedicated designers in a
semi-strategic position, BAs are the sole bridge between hardcore IT, number
crunching business and users. If anyone is to empathize with the user, it's
the BAs.
My point is that, whether it's lawyers, doctors, businessmen or designers,
there is nothing *intrinsic* to the trade that specifically excludes
empathy. There are, however, specific/individual practitioners of those
trades who include it within their practice/workflow, and others who may
not. Many architects, writers, restaurateurs, photographers and
choreographers, to cite a few examples, would also mention empathy as core
to their practice/workflow.
It's silly to rate whether, say, architecture, design or writing is more or
less emphatic than the others. There are, however, beneficial reasons to
examine individual works/methods contextually to see and learn from examples
of focusing on end-user issues and how that informs workflows.
