That's the way I start on a records classification structure too (other than
the external considerations). Like you, my colleague and I look at
everything before we start (and she's an archivist). Easier with government
departments and large companies, because they tend to have legislation
governing what they do, or decent documentation such as annual reports and
business plans.
Trouble is, the client rarely knows what they want, and even when they do it
isn't always possible, and if you give them options half the organisation
will want one thing and half the other.
Sorry for going on about records management, but I've just written a brief
overview of IA for a records publication and it has brought home to me what
I've said before, there are significant similarities.
And I love interdisciplinary perspectives - you get so much more out of life
:-)
