As you may know, broadband overtook dial-up a few months ago at least in the
U.S.

It's that simple: the power of graphical presentation.

If people were to be polled to see if they'd be willing to go back to a
text-only WWW, I'd bet 95%+ would say no, even though it'd be faster,
cheaper to produce, transmit, render, etc.

Technology moves on.
