The SmartMoney map is an example of something called "Treemaps"
which were developed by Ben Shneiderman about a decade ago.

You can find more information about treemaps here, including
software to download (java).

The software is for non-commercial use only. You can license the
software for commercial use.

The treemap algorithms (there are five) are available for free as an
our source Java library. You can find the link here (at the top look

I don't have any experience building such a map, but I hope this
