>Maybe I am confused, but why can't a Granny Smith be with both Green
and with Apples? (or fruit, or whatever)

if i missed the beginning of this thread forgive me, but it seems like
we're comparing apples and oranges here.

from a search perspective, this whole discussion is moot. the lexicon of
the search interface/cv should drive the user to the desired information
object no matter where it "lives." search for green, if the object
(granny smith) has been described with such metadata, the return would
be positive. same with "apple." same possibly with "sweet." it's
transparent navigation.

from a top down navigation perspective, jess is 100% right on. the user
persona must drive the non-transparent grouping of objects. this plays
itself out in many ways, but each contextual to the needs of the
user/business. if you're designing a photographic site, you could create
a multi-faceted browsing structure with objects appearing in numerous
groups simultaneously (reflecting the search design ala Yahoo!). but, if
you're creating a site that is truly goal designed, and more to the
point navigable, you'd focus on your persona needs and design to them.
