Unfortunatley, that's a major problem with us. Users need to set their preferences for the things they want to be notified about. That's what I was asking: did anyone have any user data indicating ways to offer such services? Perhaps Yahoo or Excite did usability studies of their preference-setting schemes? Perhaps PHPBB has usability data on how people want to be notified when someone answers their post?

Yet another issue in the risk-averse organization I work for. Email works, RSS is "in flux," so RSS is out as viable solution. That's just us.
I appreciate the discussion around this topic, but somehow I don't see where anyone's actually answered my initial query. rats.
