I wouldn't mind a heated discussion if it was about something that really
matters. Honestly. Who gives a rat's ass if IA and library sciences are not
the same but very similar? And oooooh, IBM uses a phrase that seems
completely inane, but on second thought might not be so bad after all. Why
don't we just ask them about their logic?! There are email address right on
the site. Imagine that!
That's my bile. Here's my snarky response. We could go on for years about
the overlap in industries. And not just in our "practice." There are plenty
of smart people in the world who think about the same and/or similar issues
as IA type folks. And quite frankly, I beg borrow and steal from as many as
I can.
At the same time, I am very aware of technical evolution. McLuhan's phrase
"forward through the rearview mirror" sticks in my brain. Every time I
"borrow" from anther field, I think about that rearview. How much of what I
do is incorporating good business, design, people sense? And how much is a
crutch fashioned from the past because I don't want to push myself? Dunno. I
hope it's the former.
