As you know, in some other industries such as advertising design/creative
services are loss leaders and the money is made in media placement. (That's
one of the reasons why most ad agencies are account-people dominated.) In
design (IA/IX/UX/etc) we don't have that luxury/curse.

Anecdote: About four years ago, I was talking to one of the top online
travel sites. I did a Flash presentation of what was wrong with their site,
visual, IA, workflow, content, etc. (I did it for other reasons that had
nothing to do with the travel industry actually.)

Two of their senior VPs intently followed the presentation and kept saying,
"Yep, we know about that." I said, "OK, if you already know what's wrong,
I'll stop here, thank you." One of them literally jumped up and said, "Oh
no, please continue." I asked why. The other asked me if I could email the
presentation to her. I said no and they were visibly upset. That was the
last meeting we had, as I had absolutely no intention of giving away that
for free.

Imagine this nonsense becoming the norm for us.
