Jay,

First, it depends on what kind of a taxonomy you are building and what you are
going to do with it.   Once you have that defined, there may be different
standards or best practices you can refer to.   To begin with, the concept of a
'taxonomy' is too general -- if you want to ensure that both you and the vendor
are on the same page, you'll need to be more specific in terms of taxonomy
architecture, syntax and semantics.
