By that logic, a certain programming language should be forgotten about
because no travel agent would know what I'm talking about, getting all
confused with a certain island in south east asia.

Language has context, and that context includes audience.

But tell me, why would I be talking about the minutiae of web content
copywriting to VCs in the first place? I might as be trying to impress them
with buzzwords like 'xhtml' and '<br />'.

Ziya, I'm disappointed, you can do so much better than rolling out straw-man
arguments.
