MIT Lincoln Laboratory Library is seeking a subcontractor with
experience in taxonomy or thesaurus development to assist in the
development of a Laboratory taxonomy.
MIT Lincoln Laboratory has pioneered in advanced electronics since its
origin in 1951 as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center of
the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Its Library is preparing a
taxonomy to describe Laboratory work and to provide a browse navigation
structure for Laboratory documents. We are using MultiTes, a thesaurus
management software, to classify terms and assign them a place in a
hierarchy. The final taxonomy will contain approximately 1500 terms,
with a maximum of 25 term clusters at the top level. The taxonomy will
be published for comment by Laboratory scientists in early 2004. Testing
and validation will occur thereafter and the taxonomy will be
implemented as a browsing structure.
The subcontractor will participate with our taxonomy team to:
* Provide consultation as needed on recommended taxonomy development
processes
* Develop a data-gathering and interview process to define top level
user requirements
* Implement a process to gather user input about proposed subject
hierarchies and terminology
* Conduct interviews with subject experts, along with members of the team
* Compile and synthesizing user input
* Package a hierarchical structure of the taxonomy to distribute for
comment to users
* Develop quality control process of final taxonomy
* Develop taxonomy maintenance plan
Other subcontractor responsibilities that may or may not be included in
this scope of work:
* Adding scope notes for existing terms
The subcontractor should have experience with taxonomy and thesaurus
development, preferably in the areas of science or defense technology,
be familiar with MultiTes or other taxonomy software tools, have
information seeking expertise and have knowledge of user behavior.
