[Sigia-l] link guidelines???

Hi all,

I am trying to write guidelines for e-commerce navigation design for the
merchandising group at my company who builds our site's taxonomy, and
ultimately the site's navigation. I have been trying to find information on
any guidelines for grouping like links, such as how many link belong, before
they should consider building subcategories, how many links per page are too
many.  I am also looking for any info on guidelines for ordering links:
alphabetical, best selling/most used, other...

I am struggling with them because I have told them my thoughts on the
matter, and they want recommendations from outside research.

Links to any research would be helpful.  Please reply to me off list, and I
will summarize if people are interested.
