I think NYT is on the right track here.  Navigation does not have to be
consistent throughout a site.  It needs to accommodate my needs here on this
page.  I would prefer to have the nav OUT OF THE WAY when reading articles.
I'm almost more disturbed in my reading by the nav itself than by the ads.
This is certainly true in print, where ads are easily ignored while paging
thru the paper.

I've always liked nav that adjusts & gets smaller, less obtrusive (often by
moving to the top of the page) as I get deeper into the content.
