Dear Phil:

Thank you for your email. We discussed various projects and would love
to have your feedback on these [many apologies for the long email to
follow].

*First, we have two monetary awards that we would like to give and are
interested to see whether these could be supported by the SIG general fund.

1) SIG ED Research Award: we are interested in hosting an award to
encourage information science education research (akin to the History
Award). However, we are unsure of the appropriate method of funding
such an award. It appears the History Award is supported by book
royalties and donations. We would like to see whether research-related
awards could be sponsored through the general fund.

2) SIG ED Sponsorship of Student chapters: we are interested in
providing funding to support an outstanding programs proposed by student
chapters. This would be a nice marriage between SIG and chapter events
and show the connectedness of the ASIS&T community. Again, we would
like to inquire as to the appropriateness of the SIG general fund for
such events.

3) Leadership program: we have been in discussions with Dick Hill and
Amy Wallace regarding a scholarship program that would provide funding
for new members (within the first three years) to attend the AM. The
original proposal (see attached) sought to make this an open award
applying to all SIGs, Chapters, and Committees. The goal would be to
recruit new members and to retain them through direct mentoring and
engagement. Recently, Amy has proposed a new idea that will provide
conference registration and a year's membership to new members who
commit to engaging with a SIG, Chapter or Committee. They would be
asked to work with Melissa (new Interaction Manager) to tweet, blog, or
write (for the Bulletin) about their experience at the AM. We would
like to know whether the general fund (or SIG Cabinet) would be
interested in a scholarship-type proposal that encompassed all SIGs.

*Second, we are very interested in incorporating mentoring programs into
the AM. Some ideas we discussed at our planning meeting:

1) A speed networking event for those members on the job market and
those members hiring (possibly split into groups based on career area).
This could possibly be done as a pre- or post-AM event with a small
charge (unless it could be considered an AM session).

2) A "talk to your hero" type event in which we pair newer members up
with eminent members in the organization (just for the AM).

3) Matching mentors with new members for a prolonged time (not just the
AM).

We welcome comments and criticism!
