ASIST SIG-MED
--the Medical Informatics Special Interest Group of the
American Society for Information Science and Technology--
seeks program support for possible SIG-MED sponsored sessions
at the ASIST Annual Meeting, November 13-18, 2004, in Providence, RI.
Please indicate your interest to SIG-MED by Tuesday, January 27th.

Under the overall conference theme of "Managing and Enhancing Information:
Cultures and Conflicts," SIG-MED is considering proposing programs on such
topics as
- Bioinformatics/Information Science: A domain analysis
- Applied Computational Biology: How does it draw from and
contribute to Information Science theories and applications?
- Medical Informatics Tools, e.g.
- EMBASE vs. MEDLINE: Their potentially different perspectives
on what constitutes Medical Informatics.
- Updating the BIOSIS taxonomy
- MeSH and/or UMLS (Unified Medical Language System)
developments
- Biotechnology Tools: Integration with traditional information resources
- Are We in the Post-Mendelian Age while We Think We're in a
Post-Genomic Age? What do we know vs. how do we try to learn
about the world
- Ethical implications of genomics information projects, developments,
and applications
- What's New in Sequencing Technology and Applications for Extracting
Meaning therefrom?
SIG-MED invites proposals for SIG-sponsored special or technical panel
sessions in any of these or related areas. If you or your colleagues
are interested in presenting in any of these areas, please submit a
brief statement of your proposed panel contribution (ca. 100 words),
or a 500-word abstract of a proposed paper, to Theodore Morris,
SIG-MED Chair-Elect, Kent State University School of Library and
Information Science, Columbus Program, 124 Mount Hall, 1050 Carmack
Rd., Columbus, OH 43210.
Include a proposed title, plus the name, address, telephone, fax,
e-mail, and affiliation of all proposed participants.
Electronic submissions and further inquiries are invited; send to
tamorris at kent.edu, or contact Dr. Morris at 614-292-7746.
Please indicate your interest and provide your proposal documentation
soon. SIG-MED must have your materials by January 27th, 2004.
