The SIG-STI officers are starting an evaluation process of the current state of our Special Interest Group, with the overarching goal of realigning the group with the interests of its members.

This is the current description of our SIG:

Scientific and Technical Information (STI)

"SIG/STI focuses on the applications of information science to the production, organization, and dissemination of scientific and technical information. Members of this SIG are concerned with enhancing access to information in the pure and applied sciences. SIG/STI provides a forum for information specialists, librarians, scientists, and others who work in a scientific setting to discuss and evaluate developments that offer potential for more effective management of numerical, image, and textual information."

While this is a broad description, it does not address current issues, such as data management, digital rights management, data/information curation and the changing environment of scholarly communications.

Your current SIG STI leaders would like to begin a strategic evaluation and planning process for our SIG - getting input and support from members in realigning the SIG to meet the current needs of the membership, specifically focused on:

-       what topics, issues and challenges should the SIG focus on;

- how can we leverage the strengths of our members and ASIST to provide support, products and services to our membership.

You recently saw the Call for Nominations - members elected for the 2013 year will be an integral part of this strategic realignment of our SIG. So, please consider the Call as an opportunity to help with this process.

In the coming weeks, each member will have opportunities to be a part of this strategic process beyond the opportunity to serve as an Officer of the SIG. We hope each of you will take some time to be involved.

Questions, ideas, etc. are welcomed at any time.

Sincerely,

Michael Leach (SIG-STI Chair), Moriana Garcia (SIG-STI Chair-Elect) and Joe Hourcle (Communications Officer).
