Hi all -

Well, the 2002 Annual Meeting is fast approaching, and I hope you're all
getting excited! We have quite a lot planned for this conference,
including presenting travel awards to two students, sponsoring or
co-sponsoring six panels, doing a little bit of organizing for next
year, and having some fun to boot! The conference website is
http://www.asis.org/Conferences/AM02/index.html

Our two student award winners this year are Christina Finneran of
Syracuse University (BIOSIS) and Philip Edward of the University of
Michigan (CAS). The competition for awards this year was strong, so if
you know either of these two please congratulate them mightily. If you
don't know them yet, come to the conference and meet them - I plan to!

We hope to see you at our planning meeting, which is tentatively
scheduled for Tuesday the 19th at lunch. Our dutch treat dinner will
also be on Tuesday - if you know of any restaurants in walking distance
of the conference hotel that can take large parties and don't cost too
much (I know, too many parameters!) please let me know.

I sent out the list of our six panels in the spring, but want to give
you an update now that includes dates and times of each, in case you're
planning out your conference schedule:

Monday: The Role of "Unpublished" Research in the Scholarly
Communication of Scientists: Digital Preprints and Bioinformation
Databases (10:30-noon)
Tuesday: The Changing Face of Scientific Communication: Developing New
Models for Scholarly Publishing in the Electronic Environment (1:30-3pm)

Wednesday: E-Books Rebound (8:30-10am)
Wednesday: Virtual Reference Services: Exploring the Open Source
Options (1:30-3pm)
Wednesday: Virtual Reference: Evolving the Vehicle, Evaluating the
Service and Optimizing the Link Between Providers and Users (3:30-5pm)
Thursday: NSDL: The National Science, Mathematics, Engineering and
Technology Digital Library (8:30-10am)

Other events:
SIG III (International Information Issues) is holding a silent auction
on Monday night to raise money for their travel awards program. Please
consider bringing an item for the silent auction - or at least come to
it and bid on something. It's a fun reception, too.

On Wednesday (a big day for us, all told) there will be a tour of the
ISI facility and on Thursday a tour of the Chemical Heritage Foundation,
both of which you need to register for in advance, as space is limited.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting in a month - travel
safe!
