Abstract:
We assessed 6122 environmental modelling papers published since 2005 to
determine whether the number of citations each paper had received by
September 2014 could be predicted with no knowledge of the paper's
quality. A random forest was applied, using a range of easily quantified
or classified variables as predictors. The 511 papers published in two
key journals in 2008 were further analysed to consider additional
variables. Papers with no differential equations received more
citations. The topic of the paper, number of authors and publication
venue were also significant. Ten other factors, some of which have been
found significant in other studies, were also considered, but most added
little to the predictive power of the models. Collectively, all factors
predicted 16-29% of the variation in citation counts, with the remaining
variance (the majority) presumably attributable to important subjective
factors such as paper quality, clarity and timeliness. (C) 2015

Abstract:
This special report characterizes the patterns of environmental health
literature from 1993 to 2012 by using bibliometric techniques based on
databases of the Science Citation Index and the Social Science Citation
Index. "Research article" was the most widely used document type,
accounting for 71.7% of the total records (5,053), and 94.9% of these
articles were published in English. The number of environmental health
publications is growing along with an increasing level of communication.
The U.S. was the largest contributing country with the highest h-index
(85) and the most publications (1,854), followed by the UK and Canada.
Environmental Health Perspectives and the Journal of Environmental
Health were the top two most productive journals. The most cited article
in each main research area is also listed. The authors' study not only
identifies global characteristics in environmental health research, but
also influences researchers' selection of future studies and
publications.

Vulnerabilities-*bibliometric* analysis and literature review of evolving concepts

Abstract:
In this work we analyse the evolution of the vulnerability concept in
the research streams of climate change adaptation (CCA) and disaster
risk reduction (DRR). We combine a traditional literature review with
data mining procedures applied to bibliographic databases to reconstruct
the history of the concept within various research topics, showing its
evolution and convergences over time. To do that, we integrate different
methods combining machine learning algorithms with network and cluster
analyses to examine a set of 3757 articles, analysing their distinctive
features and similarities on the basis of their contents as well as
co-authorships. Bibliometric analyses enable the identification of
different communities of articles, pinpointing key papers and authors,
while literature review makes it possible to assess the concept of
vulnerability evolved within and beyond research communities and
scientific networks. Moreover, this work examines the role played by
documents published by UN institutions (UNDRO, UNISDR, IPCC) in
contributing to the evolution of vulnerability and related concepts.
Results show that signs of convergence are evident between the two
research streams, and that the IPCC reports have played a major role in
proposing solutions for unifying definitions of vulnerability. We
observe that the phases of preparation of the IPCC reports are very rich
in methodological and terminological developments, while after
publication, the literature shows evident signs of propagation of the
proposed concepts. The DRR research stream developed before the research
stream on CCA, but the latter flourished rapidly and became much larger
in terms of number of publications. Nevertheless, in terms of contents,
adaptation studies and the IPCC have shown increasing adoption of the
concepts developed within the disaster research stream, in particular
with regard to the interpretation of vulnerability as one of the
dimensions of risk.

SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION

Abstract:
China has emerged as a science superpower in the first decade of the
2000s. In the world of science, where collaborative research has become
the norm, China may have a great influence over the international
scientific research collaboration (ISRC) network. In this exploratory
study, the author focuses on the ISRC of the Little Dragons (LDs) (i.e.
South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore), which have grown into advanced
economies and thus emphasise science as a facilitator of further
development. Using the method of cosine similarity analysis and social
network analysis, the author traces the evolutionary changes in the ISRC
of the LDs and the position of China within the ISRC network from 2002
to 2012. The differences among the three LDs are discussed and
implications are drawn.

Abstract:
The reason of higher number of citations of some articles is discussed.
Some considerations about the journals' *impact factor*, its merits and
its pitfalls are also made. Scientific journals' *impact factor*,
popularized by the Institute for Scientific Information, has become an
objective parameter for authors' evaluation and also for institutions
and other related circumstances.
There is no reason for the *impact factor*'s gap between some English
journals and those written in other languages. English journals probably
benefit of the "Mathew's effect", according to which eminent scientists
are more rewarded by similar contributions than others less known. It is
paradoxical that most of the major achievements of our age do not appear
among the 100 most cited articles.
There is no homogeneity among all the articles appearing in each
scientific journal: half of the articles are cited ten times more than
the other half. However, those articles cited 0 times are credited like
the better ones. Each article should be evaluated by its own citations,
which would be its *impact factor*; the authors should be evaluated by
their H index.

Title:
Editors' JIF-boosting stratagems - Which are appropriate and which not?

Abstract:
This extended editorial explores the growing range of stratagems devised
by journal editors to boost their Journal *Impact Factor* (JIF) and the
consequences for the credibility of this indicator as well as for the
academic community more broadly. Over recent years, JIF has become the
most prominent indicator of a journal's standing, bringing intense
pressure on journal editors to do what they can to increase it. After
explaining the curious way in which JIF is calculated and the technical
limitations that beset it, we examine the approaches employed by journal
editors to maximise it. Some approaches would seem completely
acceptable, others (such as coercive citations and cross-citing journal
cartels) are in clear breach of the conventions on academic behaviour,
but a number fall somewhere in between. Over time, editors have devised
ingenious ways of enhancing their JIF without apparently breaching any
rules. In particular, the editorial describes the 'online queue'
stratagem and asks whether this constitutes appropriate behaviour or
not. The editorial draws three conclusions. First, in the light of ever
more devious ruses of editors, the JIF indicator has now lost most of
its credibility. Secondly, where the rules are unclear or absent, the
only way of determining whether particular editorial behaviour is
appropriate or not is to expose it to public scrutiny. Thirdly, editors
who engage in dubious behaviour thereby risk forfeiting their authority
to police misconduct among authors. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights

Abstract:
Today there is a huge interest and wide discussions in the academic
world to find effective methods of evaluation of the impact of the work
of the scientists. It is argued here that the impact of the information
generated by researchers has relevance beyond a mere accounting of
citations to academic products. However, there remains the need to
assess in a more immediate way the effect or influence of scientific
work. The central argument of this contribution is that the number of
citations generated by the engine Google Scholar (GS) represents a far
more accurate and complete the work of individual researchers that FI
*impact Factor*. Associated with GS, there is the concept of index h5.
To see if there are any regularity in the proportion of citations
between the two databases, a search for citations was made to articles
for authors considered representative: Williams-Linera et al. and
Yanez-Arancibia et al. for being the most cited. The value of the
coefficient of determination shows the extraordinary regularity of this
relationship. In the case of the valuation of the journals, it is argued
that the index h is the most appropriate to the JCR. We reiterate that
the real impact of the research work is beyond the scope of academic
work and is reflected in the use of information in remote areas of
academia, but that have broad impact on society as for example, the
information required to define the protected natural areas.

Abstract:
The internationally most widely used criterion to evaluate scientific
journals is based on the value of the *impact Factor* (FI) generated
from the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) database published annually on
the Web of Science platform from Thomson Reuters. The central argument
of this article is that the most complete form of evaluation of the work
of scientists through metrics of easy access and general scope as the
index h of Hirsch from the database of Google Scholar, plus some other
considerations. The author recognizes that if the goal to achieve is to
measure the impact of purely academic research, the JCR *impact Factor*
(FI) is the most appropriate means, but if the objective is to measure
the impact of research in the real world, then other metrics and
assessment criteria should be used. Here it is suggested that the true
relevance of the publications is reflected in a more natural way among a
heterogeneous user audience with the information included in the Google
Scholar platform. For developing countries, the paper highlights that it
is more important to define their policies of support for research than
to seek greater international visibility or global relevance of their
journals. It has been shown here that the message is the important
subject matter and not the means of publication. Nevertheless,
scientific journals do deserve indeed the greatest attention by the
responsible authorities of the sciences in developing countries.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyze the existing literature on
hospitality management from all the research papers published in The
International Journal of Hospitality Management (IJHM) between 2008 and
2014. The authors apply bibliometric methods - in particular, author
citation and co-citation analyses (ACA) - to identify the main research
lines within this scientific field; in other words, its 'intellectual
structure'. Social network analysis (SNA) is also used to perform a
visualization of this structure. The results of the analysis allow us to
define the different research lines or fronts which shape the
intellectual structure of research on hospitality management. (C) 2015

Abstract:
This paper aims to explore the effects of collaborative behaviour on
scholar scientific performance. Individual network measures related to
scholar centrality as well as attitude to collaborate with others are
derived from co-authorship networks in a given scientific community
(i.e. Italian academic statisticians). Co-authorship information have
been collected from three data sources of national-based,
discipline-based, and international-based high-impact publications. Both
network and individual covariates are used to model individual h-index
by generalized extreme value distribution. Results show a positive
association between performance and actors' central position in the
network. Having a large number of co-authors and occupying central
positions are likely to positively affect scientific performance.

Abstract:
This paper presents a relational database model for science mapping
analysis. It has been specially conceived for use in almost all of the
stages of a science mapping workflow (excluding the data acquisition and
pre-processing stages). The database model is developed as an
entity-relations diagram using information that is typically presented
in science mapping studies. Finally, several SQL queries are presented
for validation purposes.
