Bibliometrics and Research Assessment:
A Symposium for Librarians and Information Professionals

Monday, October 31, 2016, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
and
Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm (on-site training)

National Institutes of Health
Clinical Center, Bethesda, Maryland

The National Institutes of Health Library<https://nihlibrary.nih.gov/Pages/default.aspx> and the SLA Maryland Chapter<http://maryland.sla.org/> are pleased to present Bibliometrics and Research Assessment: A Symposium for Librarians and Information Professionals.

Join us at the main National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Bethesda, Maryland for this free symposium and training. Librarians and information professionals from academic, corporate, and government institutions will share expertise, ideas and best practices in the production and delivery of research assessment services.

Day 1 will feature two internationally-renowned keynote speakers, Ludo Waltman<https://www.cwts.nl/people/ludo-waltman>, Researcher, Centre for Science and Technology Studies of Leiden University, The Netherlands and Katy Börner<https://www.ils.indiana.edu/people/profile.html?profile_id=2>, Distinguished Professor of Information Science, Indiana University, Bloomington discussing current trends in the fields of bibliometrics and research assessment (sponsored by Elsevier and Thomson, respectively); a poster session featuring librarians and information professionals from 27 institutions who provide these services; and a group discussion on the role of librarians in research assessment.

Day 2 features a hands-on training session where participants will learn how to perform basic bibliometric analyses, including measuring citation impact and creating various kinds of bibliometric networks.

Why attend: The growing demand for bibliometric and research assessment services represents a significant change in how patrons find and use information. Bibliometrics and assessment analytics helps to understand: who produces research at institutions; who they collaborate with; what their research is about; and what impact their research has had. Many librarians at research institutions have begun offering research assessment services to their users.

Librarians and other information professionals are uniquely positioned to provide access to research information. Using bibliometric and research assessment methods and tools, they can now also provide context, impact, and relevancy to that information.

Registration: http://tinyurl.com/bibliometricssymposium (note: Generous support from our sponsors enable this Symposium to be provided free of charge to the information community. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged!)
