Abstract:
This paper explores the importance of early-career characteristics of
academic inventors and how they affect their patenting activity. Using a
novel dataset on 555 UK academic inventors, we find that the quality of
the first invention is the best predictor for subsequent participation
in the patenting process. We further find evidence for a positive
training effect whereby researchers who were trained at universities
that had already established commercialisation units patent more. In
addition, researchers who gained their first patenting experience in
industry are able to benefit from stronger knowledge flows and receive
more citations than their purely academic peers.

Abstract:
Some scientometric studies attempt to explain the factors affecting a
country's scientific output, which is usually measured by proxy
variables such as the number of articles and citations in
internationally-renowned journals. This paper highlights the main
drivers for scientific output in economics and business, namely,
financing of education and research, population size, the number of
scholarly journals and English as the official language. We use multiple
OLS regressions and data provided by Web of Knowledge and the World Bank
covering 56 nations. The study also highlights the relationship between
scientific output and the efficiency in using the research funding. The
rankings of sample countries show that there is a learning process at
national level, the output being doubled by efficiency.

KeyWords Plus:

Abstract:
The h-index is a relatively new measure of scholarly productivity, and
is a simple tabulation of the number of articles (h) a given author has
published which have been cited at least h times. For example, a scholar
with an h-index of 10 has published ten articles which have been cited
in subsequent articles at least ten times. The h-index for all social
work and psychology tenured or tenure-track faculty housed in the top-25
American social work programmes as ranked by U.S. News and World Report
in 2008 was obtained, permitting an overall comparison of the scholarly
influence between members of the two cognate disciplines. This involved
950 social work faculty and 1,080 psychology faculty cited during the
2001-11 time frame. The average h-index for social work and psychology
faculty was 6.34 (SD = 5.57) and 11.32 (SD = 8.21), respectively-a
difference which was not significantly different. These results are an
improvement over prior related research which showed social work faculty
to be disadvantaged in terms of scholarly impact. These results are
discussed in terms of the higher scholarly standards expected of social
work academics in recent years.

Document Type:
Article

Author Keywords:
Medline/PubMed, Bibliographic research database, Impact factor, SIGAPS score

Abstract:
Background. - Medline/PubMed is the most frequently used medical
bibliographic research database. The aim of this study was to propose a
new generic method to limit any Medline/PubMed query based on the
relative impact factor and the A & B categories of the SIGAPS score.
Material and methods. - The entire PubMed corpus was used for the
feasibility study, then ten frequent diseases in terms of PubMed
indexing and the citations of four Nobel prize winners. The relative
impact factor (RIF) was calculated by medical specialty defined in
Journal Citation Reports. The two queries, which included all the
journals in category A(or A OR B), were added to any Medline/PubMed
query as a central point of the feasibility study.
Results. - Limitation using the SIGAPS category A was larger than the
when using the Core Clinical Journals (CCJ): 15.65% of PubMed corpus vs
8.64% for CCJ. The response time of this limit applied to the entire
PubMed corpus was less than two seconds. For five diseases out of ten,
limiting the citations with the RIF was more effective than with the
CCJ. For the four Nobel prize winners, limiting the citations with the
RIF was more effective than the CCJ.
Conclusion. - The feasibility study to apply a new filter based on the
relative impact factor on any Medline/PubMed query was positive. (C)

Abstract:
This paper presents a methodological approach to the identification of
potential priority areas to support the creation of policies for
research cooperation. The analysis of national research capabilities is
an important prerequisite in the development of research policies, in
particular for developing strategies for international collaboration. In
the past, the identification of a country's research capabilities was
often based on only a few indicators. Here a methodology is presented
that takes a broad view of a country's research and technology base and
applies it to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore. The methodology for
the identification of research capabilities is based on a
multi-dimensional approach that takes into account existing information
and communication technologies research and technology development
groups based on their size and quality, the interests of the researchers
based on interviews and national industry characteristics to identify
the economic collaboration potential in thematic areas.

Abstract:
This paper provides a citation network analysis of the publications in
Studies in Higher Education from 1976 to 2013 inclusive. This represents
the entire history of the journal to date. It analyses the most
published authors, most cited authors and most discussed topics using
keywords. 1056 articles were taken from Web of Science(SM) as a source
of primary data. These articles were determined to have 32,738
references. A small percentage of these articles, 218 articles, had 1030
keywords. A data visualisation and manipulation software, Gephi, was
used to provide a visual representation of the associated citation
networks. We compare the results with other higher education citation
analyses published elsewhere - a small, but growing area of research.
Results indicate that the five most published authors throughout the
journal's history are Richardson, Kember, Becher, Boud and Elton. The
five most cited authors are Entwistle, Marton, Ramsden, Biggs and
Becher. The five most discussed topics, using keywords, excluding higher
education, are 'doctoral education', 'assessment', 'phenomenography',
'student learning' and 'identity', with a number of subordinate topic
clusters amongst these. Results derived from this exercise are helpful
in illuminating the evolving concerns of the journal and its readership,
and providing a demonstration of a rigorous analytical technique for
assessing journal citation data in the future.

Abstract:
Objectives: To assess the 2008-2012 Canadian contribution to the
Otolaryngology literature.
Methods: All articles published from January 2008 - December 2012 in 5
Otolaryngology journals were reviewed. Nationality, number of authors,
and study type were extracted. The output, number of authors, and study
type of Canadian papers were compared to International papers using
Mantel-Haenszel Common Odds Ratio Estimate, Pearson's Chi-Squared or
Fishers exact tests.
Results: 4519 papers were analyzed. There was a statistically
significant decrease in Canadian authored papers from 12.8% in 2008-9 to
10.2% in 2011-12 (Fishers exact, p = .01). Multi-authorship increased in
Canadian papers (X2, p = .01). The types of studies published by
Canadian Otolaryngologists did not change over the study period.
Conclusions: Canadian authored papers in a sample of Otolaryngology
journals decreased from 2008 to 2012. The increase in multiauthorship,
whilst indicating increasing collaboration, suggests reduced per capita
publication productivity. These findings warrant further study.

Abstract:
Bibliometric analysis is very useful in evaluating the trends in
research capacity. Its recent applications include spotting emerging
technology trends and also to support the development of technology
roadmaps. The exploratory research in this paper aims to match the
market, products as well as research on emerging technologies through
the use of bibliometrics. The emerging frameworks on the use of
bibliometrics for technology roadmapping are complemented by developing
a framework that determines the future industrial impact of emerging
technologies. The proposed framework is used to determine the
nanotechnology impact on selected manufacturing industries.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a Bibliographic system intends to exchange
bibliographic information of survey/review articles by relying on Web
service technology. It allows researchers to interact with system via
single service using platform-independent standard named Web service to
add, search and retrieve bibliographic information of review articles in
various science and technology fields and build-up a dedicated database
for these articles in each science and technology field. In addition,
rich features that offered by proposed system are studied and described.
However, this paper explains in detail the proposed system using
computing area due to the existence of detailed taxonomy of this area.
Accordingly, the proposed system will be applicable to support any other
science and technology subject area without any need to modify this
system as long as the taxonomy for this area exists in the system.

Abstract:
Purpose - This purpose of this study is to examine research performance
of Iraqi-Kurdistan universities, using the number of papers appearing in
journals and proceedings, and the number of citations received by those
papers as covered by Scopus, 1970-2012. This study also identifies
subject coverage (domain/field) of publications and determines the
preference of research communication channel within the research
community?
Design/methodology/approach - A total of 459 papers published by
Iraqi-Kurdistan universities and indexed by Scopus during the given time
period were considered. The source items (i.e. records of publications
by the faculty members of the Iraqi-Kurdistan universities) were all the
documents published in international journals and proceedings indexed by
Scopus (an Elsevier bibliographic database) from the time period ranging
from 1970 to 2012. All papers having an authorship or a co-authorship
associated with the Iraqi-Kurdistan universities were included and the
number of citations received by them was counted for the period.
Findings - The study found that major journals used by Iraqi-Kurdistan
universities were Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, Journal of
Chinese Clinical Medicine, Asian Journal of Chemistry, Hemoglobin and
Journal of Applied Sciences Research. Additionally, three older
institutions (Salahaddin University-Hawler, University of Sulaimani and
University of Duhok) were the most productive universities. Moreover,
the study revealed that 237 of 459 (52 per cent) of publications have
international collaborations. It is further evident that among the 459
publications, 211 (40 per cent) have been cited 1,020 times; while 248
(60 per cent) of the papers have not been cited even once, so about 60
per cent of the papers were invisible to world science during the study
period. This study also noted that the 25 highly cited papers were cited
484 times, representing 47 per cent of all the citations (484 of 1,020).
This indicated a concentration effect, whereby a relatively small number
of papers earn most of the citations and research impact generated by
the faculty members of Iraqi-Kurdistan universities.
Originality/value - This is the first scientometric research to analyse
Iraqi-Kurdistan universities' scientific productivity.
