Abstract:
Peer review is the main institution responsible for the evaluation and
gestation of scientific research. Although peer review is widely seen as
vital to scientific evaluation, anecdotal evidence abounds of
gatekeeping mistakes in leading journals, such as rejecting seminal
contributions or accepting mediocre submissions. Systematic evidence
regarding the effectiveness-or lack thereof-of scientific gatekeeping is
scant, largely because access to rejected manuscripts from journals is
rarely available. Using a dataset of 1,008 manuscripts submitted to
three elite medical journals, we show differences in citation outcomes
for articles that received different appraisals from editors and peer
reviewers. Among rejected articles, desk-rejected manuscripts, deemed as
unworthy of peer review by editors, received fewer citations than those
sent for peer review. Among both rejected and accepted articles,
manuscripts with lower scores from peer reviewers received relatively
fewer citations when they were eventually published. However, hindsight
reveals numerous questionable gatekeeping decisions. Of the 808
eventually published articles in our dataset, our three focal journals
rejected many highly cited manuscripts, including the 14 most popular;
roughly the top 2 percent. Of those 14 articles, 12 were desk-rejected.
This finding raises concerns regarding whether peer review is ill-suited
to recognize and gestate the most impactful ideas and research. Despite
this finding, results show that in our case studies, on the whole, there
was value added in peer review. Editors and peer reviewers generally-but
not always-made good decisions regarding the identification and
promotion of quality in scientific manuscripts.

Abstract:
This article reviews research on the role of the commissioning editor in
academic book publishing. It argues that there has been a historic shift
from a primarily 'gatekeeper' role to a more proactive role in shaping
what authors write, driven by the requirements of business strategy, the
need to focus more closely on end-user needs, and, increasingly, by the
new challenges of commissioning within a digital environment. (C)

Predicting success in the National Basketball Association: Stability & potential

EXPERT PERFORMANCE; PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL; DELIBERATE PRACTICE; NBA; COLLEGE; SKILL; DRAFT; CHESS; AGE
Abstract:
Objectives: To create a more rigorous model of early career success
among players in the National Basketball Association (NBA) using growth
mixture models. To test the extent to which NBA careers can be predicted
by variables that represent past performance and variables that might
represent untapped potential.
Design: Archival data was collected from measures taken at the pre-draft
NBA combine and publicly available data on college and NBA performance.
Method: The first three years of players' NBA careers from 2001 to 2006
draft classes were analyzed using a growth mixture model with collected
variables predicting latent class. The estimated parameters were then
used to forecast the 2007 to 2010 draft classes. Draft order was also
predicted with the same variables.
Results: NBA player skill formed 3 latent classes of players; only one
class performed well in the NBA. Membership in the strongest class was
only predicted by age, quality of college program, and players' college
performance. Latent class probabilities predicted NBA career trajectory
slightly better than draft order in both the estimation model and in the
forecast model. NBA draft order was predicted by the same variables as
well as arm span and agility.
Conclusions: None of the variables analyzed supported an "untapped
potential" hypothesis. There is clear evidence for roles of training
environment and the stability of skill. The data is consistent with
views of deliberate practice and skill acquisition and appears to be
consistent with data showing the benefits of being identified as
talented, such as the Matthew effect. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Abstract:
This study examines how scholarly research on consumer brand
relationships has evolved over the last decades by conducting a
bibliometric citation meta-analysis. The bibliography was compiled using
the IS! Web of Science database. The literature review includes 392
papers by 685 authors in 101 journals. The area of consumer brand
relationships research is notably interdisciplinary, with articles
mainly published in journals for business and management, but also
applied psychology and communication. We show the impact of
universities, authors, journals, and key articles and outline possible
future research avenues. The study explores seven sub-research streams
and visualizes how articles on consumer brand relationships build on
each other using co-citation mapping technique. Based on the results of
this analysis we propose an agenda for future research. that offers the
potential to advance research on the relationships between consumers and
brands. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
ObjectivesTo characterise the literature on public involvement in health
research published between 1995 and 2009.
MethodsPapers were identified from three systematic reviews, one
narrative review and two bibliographies. The analysis identified
journals where papers were published; countries of lead authors; types
of public involved; health topic areas; and stages of research involving
the public. Papers were also classified as to whether they were
literature reviews or empirical studies; focused on participatory/action
research; were qualitative, quantitative or mixed-method. The number of
papers published per year was also examined.
FindingsOf the 683 papers identified, 297 were of USA origin and 223
were of UK origin. Of the 417 empirical papers: (i) participatory/action
research approach was dominant, together with qualitative data
collection methods; (ii) the stage of research the public was most
involved was question identification; (iii) indigenous groups were most
commonly involved; (iv) mental health was the most common health topic.
Published studies peaked in 2006.
ConclusionsThe present study identifies publication patterns in public
involvement in health research and provides evidence to suggest that
researchers increasingly are walking the walk' with respect to public
involvement, with empirical studies consistently out-numbering
literature reviews from 1998.

Abstract:
This study examines the payment policies of a list of standalone
predatory open access journals available on scholarlyoa.com. It is found
that 72% do charge article publication fees (APCs), which is a higher
percentage than found in DOAJ journals. The mean number of articles
published during 2013 was 227, but ranged from 4 to 2,286 articles. The
majority of journals charge low APCs and can be assumed to have modest
annual incomes. There was no correlation between the amount of APC
charged and the number of articles published. Comparing the number of
journals charging APCs compared to the percentage from DOAJ, the
findings suggest a connection between predatory practices and charging
author fees. However, a comprehensive assessment of the dynamics of open
access journal publishing beyond author charges should be done to avoid
using APCs alone as a measure of whether a journal is predatory or not.

Abstract:
Genre analysis has provided insights into the textual organization of
different genres. In the research article (RA) genre, previous studies
demonstrate that disciplinary variation is discernible. To raise the
investigation to the level of sub-disciplines, this study addresses two
research questions: (1) What is the textual organization of individual
RA sections in corpora from three engineering sub-disciplines? and (2)
What are the significant statistical variations in textual organization
that distinguish one engineering sub-discipline from another? Initially,
three corpora were compiled, consisting of 180 full length high quality
RAs representing three sub-disciplines of engineering (civil, software,
and biomedical). Then, the corpora were analyzed using genre analysis to
identify the textual organization prevalent in individual RA sections of
each engineering sub-discipline. Subsequently, units of textual analysis
called 'move' and 'step' were quantified and statistically analyzed to
capture significant statistical variations in each section. The analysis
reveals the influence of the sub-disciplines on the textual organization
variations across the corpora, highlighting the unique characteristics
and perspectives of each sub-discipline. The findings contribute to
enhanced quality professional communication by creating and raising
awareness and sensitivity among prospective engineering students and
practitioners when they are involved in the task of reading and/or
writing RAs. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The Psychology of Men & Masculinity (PMM) plays a vital role in
advancing the psychological study of men and masculinity. However, how
is the journal performing relative to its peer journals, and what are
its most impactful articles? To answer these questions, I compared PMM's
2010-2013 scores on 4 indices associated with the Journal Impact Factor
(IF) with the scores of 72 sex- and gender-related journals. Although
PMM's IF was at or above the average of its peers, its IF without
Self-Cites was consistently below the average of its peers. PMM's 5-year
IF fared better than the average of its peers, with z-scores ranging
from 0.226-0.720. The most cited articles included psychometric reports,
theoretical articles, and articles on men's body-image. I offer

using unique keywords to increase the likelihood of articles being

Abstract:
This paper presents the bibliometric characteristics of 32 biomedical
open access journals published by Academic Journals and International
Research Journals the two Nigerian publishers in Jeffery Beall's list of
23 predatory open access publishers in 2012. Data about the journals and
the authors of their articles were collected from the websites of the
publishers, Google Scholar and Web of Science. As at December 2012, the
journals had together produced a total of 5,601 papers written by 5,599
authors, and received 12,596 citations. Authors from Asia accounted for
56.79% of the publications; those from Africa wrote 28.35% while Europe
contributed 7.78%. Authors from Africa accounted for 18.25% of the
citations these journals received, and this is about one-third the
number of citations by authors in Asia (54.62%). At country level, India
ranks first in the top 10 citer countries, while Nigeria, the host
country of the journals, ranked eighth. More in-depth studies are
required to develop further information about the journals such as how
much scientific information the journals contain, as well as the science
literacy of the authors and the editorial. (C) Williams Ezinwa Nwagwu

Abstract:
Background: Measures of research productivity are increasingly used to
determine how research should be evaluated and funding decisions made.
In psychiatry, citation patterns within and between countries are not
known, and whether these differ by choice of citation metric.
Method: In this study, we examined publication characteristics and
citation practices in articles published in 50 Web of Science indexed
psychiatric and relevant clinical neurosciences journals, between
January 2004 and December 2009 comprising 51,072 records that produced
375,962 citations. We compared citation patterns, including
self-citations, between countries using standard x(2) tests.
Results: We found that most publications came from the USA, with Germany
being second and UK third in productivity. USA articles received most
citations and the highest citation rate with an average 11.5 citations
per article. The UK received the second highest absolute number of
citations, but came fourth by citation rate (9.7 citations/article),
after the Netherlands (11.4 citations/article) and Canada (9.8
citations/article). Within the USA, Harvard University published most
articles and these articles were the most cited, on average 20.0
citations per paper. In Europe, UK institutions published and were cited
most often. The Institute of Psychiatry/Kings College London was the
leading institution in terms of number of published records and overall
citations, while Oxford University had the highest citation rate (18.5
citations/record). There were no differences between the self-citation
practices of American and European researchers. Articles that examined
some aspect of treatment in psychiatry were the most published. In terms
of diagnosis, papers about schizophrenia-spectrum disorders were the
most published and the most cited.
Conclusions: We found large differences between and within countries in
terms of their research productivity in psychiatry and clinical
neuroscience. In addition, the ranking of countries and institutions
differed widely by whether productivity was assessed by total research
records published, overall citations these received, or citations per
paper. The choice of measures of scientific output could be important in
determining how research output translates into decisions about resource
allocation.

Abstract:
Introduction. This study aims to gain a greater understanding of the
development of open access practices amongst library and information
science authors, since their role is integral to the success of the
broader open access movement.
Method. Data were collected from scholarly articles about open access by
library and information science authors from 2003 until 2011 found in
the Library and Information Science Abstracts database.
Analysis. A bibliometric approach is taken for the information gathered
from 203 articles. Excel and SPSS were used to derive descriptive
statistics and correlations.
Results. Overall an open access rate of 60% was found, which was lower
than expected considering 94% of these articles appeared to endorse open
access.
Conclusions. Although these results show a higher open access rate than
previous studies, and a linear growth of open access publications over
the years, there is still a large gap between theory and practice which
needs to be addressed.

Abstract:
Presents the question about continuity and timeliness of scientific
journals published. Highlights the importance of Brazilian scientific
journals with open access users of the Open Journal Systems software.
This study point out the use of Open Journal Systems in several
associations, educational and research institutions Brazil, that is,
with the evolution of software that enables hosting on the same server
several scientific, artistic, philosophical and cultural periodicals in
the environment named repository of magazines or more frequent in Brazil
called journals Portal. Available documents it is part of a research
post - doctoral stage, the documental research give the
contextualization of the study and data be collected in May 2014, are
used in the Portal of Open Journal System - IBICT, the Union Catalog of
Libraries EZB, the Diadorim, LATINDEX DOAJ sites. The results show OJS
are expanded for publications born in digital form and also migrated
from print to digital support being made available in open access. The
portals and journals directories enable periodic reduce costs, recover
the cultural memory, facilitate the maintenance and security of the
operating system and amplify the visibility of journals hosted and open
access trend is to increase access and use of the information published.

Abstract:
Emerging technologies are of great interest to a wide range of
stakeholders, but identifying such technologies is often problematic,
especially given the overwhelming amount of information available to
analysts and researchers on many subjects. This paper describes the
Emerging Clusters Model, which uses advanced patent citation techniques
to locate emerging technologies in close to real time, rather than
retrospectively. The model covers multiple patent systems, and is
designed to be extensible to additional systems. This paper also
describes the first large scale test of the Emerging Clusters Model.
This test reveals that patents in emerging clusters consistently have a
significantly higher impact on subsequent technological developments
than patents outside these clusters. Given that these emerging clusters
are defined as soon as a given time period ends, without the aid of any
forward-looking information, this suggests that the Emerging Clusters
Model may be a useful tool for identifying interesting new technologies
as they emerge. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
This study examines how scholarly research on consumer brand
relationships has evolved over the last decades by conducting a
bibliometric citation meta-analysis. The bibliography was compiled using
the IS! Web of Science database. The literature review includes 392
papers by 685 authors in 101 journals. The area of consumer brand
relationships research is notably interdisciplinary, with articles
mainly published in journals for business and management, but also
applied psychology and communication. We show the impact of
universities, authors, journals, and key articles and outline possible
future research avenues. The study explores seven sub-research streams
and visualizes how articles on consumer brand relationships build on
each other using co-citation mapping technique. Based on the results of
this analysis we propose an agenda for future research. that offers the
potential to advance research on the relationships between consumers and
brands. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Sugeno integral-based confidence intervals for the theoretical h-index
of a fixed-length sequence of i.i.d. random variables are derived. They
are compared with other estimators of such a distribution characteristic
in a Pareto i.i.d. model. It turns out that in the first case we obtain
much wider intervals. It seems to be due to the fact that a Sugeno
integral, which may be applied on any ordinal scale, is known to ignore
too much information from cardinal-scale data being aggregated.

In addition, the ranking of countries and institutions
differed widely by whether productivity was assessed by total research
records published, overall citations these received, or citations per
paper. The choice of measures of scientific output could be important in
determining how research output translates into decisions about resource
allocation.

Abstract:
Similarity computation for academic literature data is one of the
interesting topics that have been discussed recently in information
retrieval and data mining. Consequently, a variety of methods has been
proposed to compute the similarity of scientific papers. In this paper,
we present various similarity methods and evaluate their effectiveness
via extensive experiments on a real-world dataset of scientific papers.
