Abstract: A basic premise of diffusion theories is that actors vary in their susceptibility to social influence and yet little is known about the nature and consequences of such heterogeneity in specific market domains. The present study examines variation in social influence with respect to academic research and citation accumulation. Based on theories of uncertainty, signaling, and legitimacy, the main hypothesis is that disciplinary outsiders are more likely than insiders to cite papers that are already highly cited. The empirical analysis, which spans six disciplines and 13 flagship journals, is based on over 800 articles and the 55,000+ citations they accumulate over a 20-year period. Each citation received is classified with respect to both its timing and the discipline from which it was sent. The results show that the effect of prior citation attention is greater for external citation accumulation even after controlling for the fact that externals adopt later on average than internals. Contrary to intuition, however, outsiders do not appear to uniformly exacerbate citation inequality. The broader implications of this study for diffusion and the sociology of science are discussed in the conclusion.

Title: Structuralism and Quantitative Science Studies: Exploring First Links

Abstract: In this paper, the potentials of systematically linking philosophy of science with bibliometrics are investigated by exploring whether concepts developed within the structuralist theory of science can be used as interpretative basis for author co-citation studies. It is argued that clusters of co-cited authors cannot be interpreted straightforwardly as scientific communities nor as scientific generations. The first reason is that the respective constituents differ (authors vs. scientists), the second is that the co-citation relation generates non-Kuhnian communities, i.e. communities not sharing a paradigm/theory-core. Instead, co-citation clusters can more adequately be taken to represent communities of common (epistemic) interest. Hence, the concepts of interest community and of discourse community are introduced into the structuralist framework making use of the notion of intended application. All in all, it becomes clear that a full-fledged theory of publication is the still missing prerequisite for further linking bibliometrics and philosophy of science at a large scale.

Abstract: Ranking the significance of scientific publications is a long-standing challenge. The network-based analysis is a natural and common approach for evaluating the scientific credit of papers. Although the number of citations has been widely used as a metric to rank papers, recently some iterative processes such as the well-known PageRank algorithm have been applied to the citation networks to address this problem. In this paper, we introduce nonlinearity to the PageRank algorithm when aggregating resources from different nodes to further enhance the effect of important papers. The validation of our method is performed on the data of American Physical Society (APS) journals. The results indicate that the nonlinearity improves the performance of the PageRank algorithm in terms of ranking effectiveness, as well as robustness against malicious manipulations. Although the nonlinearity analysis is based on the PageRank algorithm, it can be easily extended to other iterative ranking algorithms and similar improvements are expected.

Abstract: A bibliometric approach was employed to analyze the research productivity and performance of creativity studies between 1965 and 2012. A dataset was constructed using all publications and citations retrieved from four key journals that publish creativity research: Journal of Creative Behavior (JCB), Gifted Child Quarterly (GCQ), Creativity Research Journal (CRJ), and Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity, and the Arts (PACA). Major findings in this study include: (a) During the study period, the four journals have published 1,891 articles on creativity and they have been cited 11,709 times; (b) the impact factors of the four journals increased from lower than .50 in 2002 to over 1.0 in 2012; in 2012 PACA had the highest impact factor, followed by CRJ; (c) JCB published the most creativity papers and CRJ had the most citations; (d) about a third of the articles published in the four journals have never been cited. Implications for the field of creativity are discussed.

Abstract: This paper reports a quantitative analysis of the relationship between word frequency distributions and morphological features in languages. We analyze a commonly-observed process of historical language change: The loss of inflected forms in favour of 'analytic' periphrastic constructions. These tendencies are observed in parallel translations of the Book of Genesis in Old English and Modern English. We show that there are significant differences in the frequency distributions of the two texts, and that parts of these differences are independent of total number of words, style of translation, orthography or contents. We argue that they derive instead from the trade-off between synthetic inflectional marking in Old English and analytic constructions in Modern English. By exploiting the earliest ideas of Zipf, we show that the syntheticity of the language in these texts can be captured mathematically, a property we tentatively call their grammatical fingerprint. Our findings suggest implications for both the specific historical process of inflection loss and more generally for the characterization of languages based on statistical properties.

Abstract: In this paper, we start from relational capital, which is one of the components of intellectual capital addressing the intangible values of organizations. In popular usage, the concept seems to be closely related to social capital, with similar words (such as relationships and network) explaining it, and with claims that scholars use social capital instead of relational capital despite their differing origins. As we observe these terms to be used interchangeably in business management literature, we will elaborate on the question: should relational capital and social capital be seen as one or two fields of study? We proceed to use bibliographic data from Scopus with the method of social network analysis in finding and comparing the authorities for relational capital and social capital. We define authority with Kleinberg's HITS algorithm, hence linking authority to citations (the number of citations as well as who does the citation), as citations are generally seen to indicate recognition and merit in the world of scientific writing. We then compare the resulting lists of top 20 authorities in the two fields as well as provide insights with network visualizations. Our findings reveal only 4 names on both lists (Hitt, Nahapiet, Ghoshal and Kogut), suggesting that the fields are separate but related, which is made explicit with the network visualizations that show these citation-based linkages between the two fields. The visualized networks suggest further that relational capital literature is using social capital literature in its citations. Overall, these findings reveal the linkages between the concepts of relational capital and social capital in scientific literature as well as provide means for showing the roles of specific actors, in this case certain core authors. Hence, the findings provide a shared understanding for scholars and practitioners interested in these concepts and can provide support for future studies in these areas.

Abstract: Bibliographic citation is one of the most important activities of an author in the production of any scientific work. The reasons that an author cites other publications are varied: to gain assistance of some sort, to review, critique or refute previous works, etc. In this paper we propose a tool, called CiTalO, to infer automatically the nature of citations by means of Semantic Web technologies and NLP techniques. Such a characterisation makes citations more effective for linking, disseminating, exploring and evaluating research.

Abstract: Mergers and acquisitions (M&As) are important modes through Which firms carry out their domestic and international strategies and have been noted as the CEOs favorite strategy. As a significant field of study, M&A-research has accumulated substantial knowledge. This bibliometric study examines the extant strategy and international business literature on M&As. Methodologically, we examined a sample of 334 articles published in sixteen leading management/business journals, during a 31 year period from 1980 to 2010. The results provide a global perspective of the field, identifying the works that have had the greater impact, the intellectual interconnections among authors and works, the main research traditions, or themes, delved upon on M&A-related research. Structural and longitudinal analyses reveal the changes in the intellectual structure of the field over time. A discussion on the accumulated knowledge and future research avenues concludes this paper. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Title:

Diffusing through Disciplines: Insiders, Outsiders, and Socially Influenced Citation Behavior

Abstract:

A basic premise of diffusion theories is that actors vary in their

susceptibility to social influence and yet little is known about the

nature and consequences of such heterogeneity in specific market

domains. The present study examines variation in social influence with

respect to academic research and citation accumulation. Based on

theories of uncertainty, signaling, and legitimacy, the main hypothesis

is that disciplinary outsiders are more likely than insiders to cite

papers that are already highly cited. The empirical analysis, which

spans six disciplines and 13 flagship journals, is based on over 800

articles and the 55,000+ citations they accumulate over a 20-year

period. Each citation received is classified with respect to both its

timing and the discipline from which it was sent. The results show that

the effect of prior citation attention is greater for external citation

accumulation even after controlling for the fact that externals adopt

later on average than internals. Contrary to intuition, however,

outsiders do not appear to uniformly exacerbate citation inequality. The

broader implications of this study for diffusion and the sociology of

science are discussed in the conclusion.
