Abstract:
There is general consensus in the study of science, and especially
research policy studies, that a wave of profound change has struck
academic science in the past decades. Central parts of this change are
increased competition, growing demands of relevance and excellence, and
managerialism reforms in institutions and policy systems. The
underpinning thesis of this article is that, if seen from the
perspective of individual scientists, these changes are exogenous and
lead to greater environmental complexity and uncertainty, which in turn
induces or forces individuals towards strategic planning and organizing
in order to maintain control over their own research programs. Recent
empirical studies have made various worthy contributions to the
understanding of the macro-level (institutions, policy and funding
systems, and broader epistemic developments) and the micro-level
(individual and group behavior) developments of the social system of
science, but there is a lack of comprehensive conceptual tools for
analysis of change and its effect on individual scientists. This article
takes the first steps towards developing a conceptual scheme for use in
empirical studies of the (strategic) response of individual scientists
to exogenous change, based on an adaptation of Resource Dependence
Theory (RDT). The intended theoretical contribution builds on
conceptualization of the individual researcher as crucially able to act
rationally and strategically in the face of potentially conflicting
demands from a growingly unpredictable environment. Defining a basic
framework for a broad future research program, the article adds to the
knowledge about the recent changes to the academic research system and
calls for renewed interest in organizing in science and an analysis of
the complex social system of science from the perspective of its
smallest performing units: individuals.

Abstract:
Many lists that purport to gauge the quality of journals in management
and organization studies (MOS) are based on the judgments of experts in
the field. This article develops an identity concerns model (ICM) that
suggests that such judgments are likely to be shaped by the personal and
social identities of evaluators. The model was tested in a study in
which 168 editorial board members rated 44 MOS journals. In line with
the ICM, respondents rated journal quality more highly to the extent
that a given journal reflected their personal concerns (associated with
having published more articles in that journal) and the concerns of a
relevant ingroup (associated with membership of the journal's editorial
board or a particular disciplinary or geographical background). However,
judges' ratings of journals in which they had published were more
favorable when those journals had a low-quality reputation, and their
ratings of journals that reflected their geographical and disciplinary
affiliations were more favorable when those journals had a high-quality
reputation. The findings are thus consistent with the view that identity
concerns come to the fore in journal ratings when there is either a need
to protect against personal identity threat or a meaningful opportunity
to promote social identity.

Abstract:
Hepatitis B is the tenth leading cause of death worldwide. Countries
with high endemicity, such as China and Taiwan show high scientific
productivity in this field and dominate the top ten list of the most
productive authors worldwide, providing four of them. This is
remarkable, as the USA and Europe usually maintain leading positions,
not only regarding country-specific scientific productivity, but also
top ten ranking of most productive and most cited authors in other
important medical sectors. So far, a scientometric analysis of the topic
'hepatitis B' has not been generated despite an increased need for it in
times of modified evaluation criteria for academic personnel and a
subsequent tendency to co-authorship and author self-citation. In this
study, scientometric methods and large-scale data analysis were used to
evaluate quality and quantity of scientific research dealing with the
topic 'hepatitis B' and to contribute to distinguish relevant research
output. Data were gained from Pubmed and ISI-Web. In the time span of
1971-2011, 49 166 items were published by 250 countries, of which the
USA have been the most productive supplier with 28% of all publications,
followed in considerable distance by Germany, China, the United Kingdom,
Japan, France, Italy and Taiwan, respectively. The USA have established
their position as centre of international cooperation. Their cooperation
with China proves to be the most productive one. The most prolific
journals in the field of hepatitis b were 'Hepatology', the 'Journal of
Hepatology' and the 'Journal of Medical Virology'. h-index, citation
rate and *impact factor*, commonly used for assessment of scientific
quality, were determined and discussed critically with regard to
distortion by bias of self-citation and co-authorship.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Neurointerventional therapy of cerebrovascular
disease is a greatly expanding field across many specialty disciplines.
The goal of this study was to analyze the characteristics and trends of
scientific publications that focused on neurointervention during the
past decade.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bibliometric evaluation of neurointerventional
research published between 2003 and 2012 was conducted by using the
PubMed data base. Analyzed parameters included the year of publication,
type of document, language of the article, topic, declared funding,
country of origin, type of collaboration between disciplines, the first
author's specialty, and subject category and the *Impact Factor* of the
publishing journal.
RESULTS: Between 2003 and 2012, a total of 2123 articles were published,
of which 1107 (52.1%) were original articles, 1948 (91.8%) were written
in English, 192 (9.0%) received funding, 661 (31.1%) were published by
the United States, and 1060 (49.9%) resulted from interdisciplinary
collaboration. Neurosurgery departments produced the most articles (n =
910,42.9%), followed by radiology (n = 747,35.2%) and neurology (n =
270, 12.7%). The time-trend analysis in the number of publications
demonstrated slow growth from 2003 to 2012, with an average annual
growth rate of +6.0%.
CONCLUSIONS: The fields of neurosurgery, radiology, and neurology have
contributed substantially to neurointervention research. Slow growth,
high interdisciplinary collaboration, and a low level of funding are
peculiar characteristics of research in this field.

Abstract:
Bibliometric analyses are viewed as a proxy marker of a papers influence
and therefore an analysis of the most influential papers published in
recent decades. This study is a citation analysis of the top 100 most
cited papers in transplantation. We hypothesized that the field of
transplantation could serve as an exemplar model of an area in which
advancement of the specialty could be heavily attributed to
translational research. This paper represents the first use of this
technique of bibliometric analysis in the context of transplantation as
a whole and also to subdivide the top cited papers within the field
according to clinical versus scientific origin. Papers ranking in the
top 100 were published in 16 journals. A total of 48 of the top 100
papers were scientific with 52 clinical. The majority of the top cited
papers (67) originated in the USA and were published between 2000 and
2009. The New England Journal of Medicine published the majority of the
top 100 papers in transplantation (24), followed by Transplantation (21)
and Nature (18). This article provides a valuable perspective on this
field by outlining the key publications and highlighting the importance
of translational research in advancing the progress.

Abstract:
With the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
recently celebrating its 75th anniversary, it is an opportune time to
assess the impact and influence that physiatric articles and research
have had on the field, as well as the greater scientific community. One
useful metric of scientific impact is citation count, which is the most
common method for analyzing the magnitude of scientific recognition of
an individual article. This study presents 2 reading lists of
influential physiatric academic journal articles drawn from the Web of
Science index based on citation count. The first list contains the top
25 most-cited articles during the last 3 decades from the American
Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Archives of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and PM&R. The second list contains
the top 10 articles in 20 different physiatric topical areas. This
topical list was generated via an expanded search without limitation of
time span or journal. This allowed for the identification of influential
physiatric articles not found in the field's 3 major publications from
the United States. Although citation index is not a direct measure of
quality or importance, it offers one form of quantitative assessment of
scientific impact. This assessment contributes to the identification of
trends, which illustrate the evolution of scope and focus of physiatry
research. The lists of most-cited articles presented in this review can
be used to provide historical context to physiatry's existing body of
research, direct future evidence-based research efforts, and help guide
educators as they select resident reading lists or journal club
materials.

Abstract:
The study of 1078 Latin American articles on management published
bAetween 1990 and 2010, included in journals of the ISI Web of Knowledge
database under the category 'management' shows that articles' impact and
the language they are published is positively associated. The general
analysis shows that the external citation mean rank of articles
published in English language is significantly higher to that of
articles being published in Spanish or Portuguese. When analyzing only
the 301 articles from journals published in Latin America on management,
no differences were found in the mean rank of external citations of
articles published in English language to those published in Portuguese.
Nevertheless, surprisingly the external citations mean rank of articles
published in Portuguese were significantly higher to those published in
Spanish language.

Abstract:
In this study, we explicate citing behavior in the writing of scientific
papers by presenting a taxonomy of motives to cite. The suggested
taxonomy consists of four main categories, which are purely descriptive:
Argumentation, Social Alignment, Mercantile Alignment, and Data. These
categories are divided into a suggested set of subcategories. We argue
that the complexities of citing practice show how little can be assumed
about actual citing behavior when studying a finished paper. The
discussion supports the claim that it might be misleading to treat all
citations as equal in quantitative citation analysis.

Abstract:
The earliest hypothesis concerning the phonetic-phonological roots of
reading and writing learning disabilities is usually attributed to Boder
in the U.S. literature. Yet by following a trail of references to work
in psychology and education conducted some 30 years earlier in the USSR,
we find the seeds of this idea already well established in the work of
Russian educator and psychologist Roza Levina. Here we trace the Soviet
origins of these ideas and discuss their heretofore unrecognized
importance in the field of learning disabilities and special education.

Abstract:
The objective of this article is: a) to identify Peruvian researchers
with high, medium and low *impact factor* according to Web of Science
and Scopus databases; b) to identify the bibliometric factor with the
highest influence on h-index of Peruvian researchers; c) to compare
h-index between Web of Science and Scopus, at an individual and
institutional level. Data were collected from Web of Science and Scopus
(189 Peruvian researchers, 28 institutions on Web of Science and 33 on
Scopus), between September 1823, 2013. Then, institutional registries
were created and linear regression analysis with stepwise procedure was
run to identify bibliometric factors with higher influence on the
h-index of Peruvian researchers. Web of Science and Scopus showed
interesting simmilarities in the h-index of Peruvian academic
institutions. At individual level, documents indexed in citation
database had the highest influence on the h-index. Regression model
identified bibliometric factors with higher influence on the h-index of
Peruvian researchers, however further large scale studies are needed to
improve external validity.

Abstract:
There has been a growing interest and need in the evaluation of the
quality and quantity of papers published by researchers. Therefore, the
most important measurements are the number of items, the journal *impact
factor* and the h-index. The aim of this paper is to analyze the
publications of the professors in the field of Physical Education in
Spain and Brazil published in journals in the Web of Science and Scopus
databases. The method used is a descriptive, comparative and
correlational analysis of documents. The sample consisted of 373
publications of professors of which 108 are in the field of Physical
Education in Brazil and 265 in the field of Physical Education in Spain.
The results indicate that the professors in the field of Physical
Education in Spain produced an h-index of 2.6 and 7.4 papers per
researcher in Web of Science and an h-index of 3.1 and 9.5 papers per
professor in Scopus. Brazilian professors obtained an h-index of 6.05 in
Web of Science with a mean of 30.91 papers per researcher and h-index of
7.5 and 37.7 papers per professor in Scopus. Correlations between the
number of papers per professor and h-index are high both in the Web of
Science and Scopus. The majority of Brazilian and Spanish professors
publish in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise and the Journal
of Strength and Conditioning Research. Significant differences among
professors of different countries were found in the present research.

Abstract:
The study addresses the visibility of electronic scientific journals, as
well as the characteristics that promote, especially focusing on those
hosted on the Portal of Scientific Journals of the Universidade Federal
do Rio Grande do Sul. The study assesses the degree of visibility of
these journals on the Internet by means of their presence in information
sources. The theoretical reference addresses the following themes:
scientific communication; scientific journals; visibility and
searchability; information sources on portal; bibliographic databases
and open access. This is a descriptive and exploratory study that
combines qualitative and quantitative data. The corpus of research was
composed of 34 titles. Essential information about the journals was
collected, giving emphasis to the characteristics that promote their
visibility. It was found that Human Sciences is the area with the
greatest number of journals at the University, 29.4% of all
publications. Open access is adopted by all journals in the sample. Once
the information sources had been mapped, it was found that the majority
of journals appear in the information source Latin American Periodicals
Tables of Contents, followed by Latindex. Despite the limited presence
of the journals in international information sources, it was concluded
that the journals hosted on the Website of Scientific Journals seek to
adapt to characteristics that promote their visibility. The study
suggests a number of new studies, deepens the analyses, and addresses
other themes related to visibility and, especially, bibliometric
studies.

Abstract:
Background: Co-authorship is one of the most tangible forms of research
collaboration. A co-authorship network is a social network in which the
authors through participation in one or more publication through an
indirect path have linked to each other. The present research using the
social network analysis studied co-authorship network of 681 articles
published in Journal of Research in Medical Sciences (JRMS) during
2008-2012. Materials and Methods: The study was carried out with the
scientometrics approach and using co-authorship network analysis of
authors. The topology of the co-authorship network of 681 published
articles in JRMS between 2008 and 2012 was analyzed using macro-level
metrics indicators of network analysis such as density, clustering
coefficient, components and mean distance. In addition, in order to
evaluate the performance of each authors and countries in the network,
the micro-level indicators such as degree centrality, closeness
centrality and betweenness centrality as well as productivity index were
used. The UCINET and NetDraw softwares were used to draw and analyze the
co-authorship network of the papers. Results: The assessment of the
authors productivity in this journal showed that the first ranks were
belonged to only five authors, respectively. Furthermore, analysis of
the co-authorship of the authors in the network demonstrated that in the
betweenness centrality index, three authors of them had the good
position in the network. They can be considered as the network leaders
able to control the flow of information in the network compared with the
other members based on the shortest paths. On the other hand, the key
role of the network according to the productivity and centrality indexes
was belonged to Iran, Malaysia and United States of America. Conclusion:
Co-authorship network of JRMS has the characteristics of a small world
network. In addition, the theory of 6 degrees separation is valid in
this network was also true.

Abstract:
With the growth of attention on e-Science and collaborative environment
for scientific research, bibliometrics software needs to adopt a new
form of architecture instead of traditional desktop software
architecture. In this paper, the design of a bibliometrics system based
on Rich Internet Application (RIA) and its core module's implementation
are presented. The system's browser-side application is built upon Adobe
Flex, and its server-side application is built upon J2EE. PureMVC
framework is introduced to create the Flex application based on MVC
concept. The system's main function is to analyze the literature
information based on mathematical and statistical laws of bibliometrics,
providing good visualization as well.

Abstract:
In this paper, we start from relational capital, which is one of the
components of intellectual capital addressing the intangible values of
organizations. In popular usage, the concept seems to be closely related
to social capital, with similar words (such as relationships and
network) explaining it, and with claims that scholars use social capital
instead of relational capital despite their differing origins. As we
observe these terms to be used interchangeably in business management
literature, we will elaborate on the question: should relational capital
and social capital be seen as one or two fields of study? We proceed to
use bibliographic data from Scopus with the method of social network
analysis in finding and comparing the authorities for relational capital
and social capital. We define authority with Kleinberg's HITS algorithm,
hence linking authority to citations (the number of citations as well as
who does the citation), as citations are generally seen to indicate
recognition and merit in the world of scientific writing. We then
compare the resulting lists of top 20 authorities in the two fields as
well as provide insights with network visualizations. Our findings
reveal only 4 names on both lists (Hitt, Nahapiet, Ghoshal and Kogut),
suggesting that the fields are separate but related, which is made
explicit with the network visualizations that show these citation-based
linkages between the two fields. The visualized networks suggest further
that relational capital literature is using social capital literature in
its citations. Overall, these findings reveal the linkages between the
concepts of relational capital and social capital in scientific
literature as well as provide means for showing the roles of specific
actors, in this case certain core authors. Hence, the findings provide a
shared understanding for scholars and practitioners interested in these
concepts and can provide support for future studies in these areas.

Abstract:
The reasons why an author cites other publications are varied: an author
can cite previous works to gain assistance of some sort in the form of
background information, ideas, methods, or to review, critique or refute
previous works. The problem is that the best possible way to retrieve
the nature of citations is very time consuming: one should read article
by article to assign a particular characterisation to each citation. In
this paper we propose an algorithm, called CiTalO, to infer
automatically the function of citations by means of Semantic Web
technologies and NLP techniques. We also present some preliminary
experiments and discuss some strengths and limitations of this approach.

Abstract:
The research community of Geographic Information Systems and Science
(GIS) has been growing rapidly during the last two decades. Little
attention has been paid to understanding its geography, structure and
evolution. Taking a new organizational perspective, this article aims to
fill the knowledge gap by analyzing collaboration and citation networks
between GIS research organizations, including academic institutions,
government agencies, businesses, and others. These two networks are
analyzed in geographical and bibliographical spaces, respectively, to
discover characteristic distributions and structures. The results show
an uneven geographic distribution of GIS research organizations, and
clustered spatial interactions between them. Both collaboration and
citation networks exhibit typical scale-free structures, which came into
being around the year 2000 and have remained to the present. Further,
the GIS research community is composed of 11 cohesive sub-groups, with
each having a clear hub-spoke structure and a few highly connected
organizations as leaders. These results shed light on the overall
picture of the GIS research community, and offer a reference system that
stimulates further exploration.

Abstract:
Many of the messages presented in respectable scientific publications
are, in fact, based on various forms of rumors. Some of these rumors
appear so frequently, and in such complex, colorful, and entertaining
ways that we can think of them as academic urban legends. The
explanation for this phenomenon is usually that authors have lazily,
sloppily, or fraudulently employed sources, and peer reviewers and
editors have not discovered these weaknesses in the manuscripts during
evaluation. To illustrate this phenomenon, I draw upon a remarkable case
in which a decimal point error appears to have misled millions into
believing that spinach is a good nutritional source of iron. Through
this example, I demonstrate how an academic urban legend can be
conceived and born, and can continue to grow and reproduce within
academia and beyond.

Abstract:
There has been a growing interest and need in the evaluation of the
quality and quantity of papers published by researchers. Therefore, the
most important measurements are the number of items, the journal impact
factor and the h-index.

Abstract:
In research, influence is often synonymous with importance; the
researcher that is judged to be influential is often chosen for the
grants, distinctions and promotions that serve as fuel for research
programs. The influence of a researcher is often measured by how often
he or she is cited, yet as a measure of influence, we show that citation
frequency is only weakly correlated with influence ratings collected
from peers. In this paper, we use machine learning to enable a new
system that provides a better measure of researcher influence. This
system predicts the influence of one researcher on another via a range
of novel social, linguistic, psychological, and bibliometric features.
To collect data for training and testing this approach, we conducted a
survey of 74 researchers in the field of computational linguistics, and
collected thousands of influence ratings. Our results on this data show
that our approach significantly outperforms measures based on citations
alone, improving prediction accuracy by 56%. We also perform a detailed
analysis of the key features in our model, and make some important
observations about the scientific and non-scientific factors that most
predict researcher influence.
