Abstract:
We introduce a simple agent-based model which allows us to analyze three
stylized facts: a fat-tailed size distribution of companies, a
'tent-shaped' growth rate distribution, the scaling relation of the
growth rate variance with firm size, and the causality between them.
This is achieved under the simple hypothesis that firms compete for a
scarce quantity (either aggregate demand or workforce) which is
allocated probabilistically. The model allows us to relate size and
growth rate distributions. We compare the results of our model to
simulations with other scaling relationships, and to similar models and
relate it to existing theory. Effects arising from binning data are
discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Title:
Summarization of scientific documents by detecting common facts in citations

Abstract:
Reading scientific articles is more time-consuming than reading news
because readers need to search and read many citations. This paper
proposes a citation guided method for summarizing multiple scientific
papers. A phenomenon we can observe is that citation sentences in one
paragraph or section usually talk about a common fact, which is usually
represented as a set of noun phrases co-occurring in citation texts and
it is usually discussed from different aspects. We design a
multi-document summarization system based on common fact detection. One
challenge is that citations may not use the same terms to refer to a
common fact. We thus use term association discovering algorithm to
expand terms based on a large set of scientific article abstracts. Then,
citations can be clustered based on common facts. The common fact is
used as a salient term set to get relevant sentences from the
corresponding *cited articles* to form a summary. Experiments show that
our method outperforms three baseline methods by ROUGE metric. (C) 2013

Abstract:
Many reports have shown that the access pattern for geospatial tiles
follows *Zipf*'s law and that its parameter a represents the access
characteristics. However, visits to geospatial tiles have temporal and
spatial popularities, and the a-value changes as they change. We
construct a mathematical model to simulate the user's access behavior by
studying the attributes of frequently visited tile objects to determine
parameter estimation algorithms. Because the least squares (LS) method
in common use cannot obtain an exact alpha-value and does not provide a
suitable fit to data for frequently visited tiles, we present a new
approach, which uses a moment method of estimation to obtain the value
of alpha when alpha is close to 1. When alpha is further away from 1,
the method uses the associated cache hit ratio for tile access and uses
an LS method based on a critical cache size to estimate the value of
alpha. The decrease in the estimation error is presented and discussed
in the section on experiment results. This new method, which provides a
more accurate estimate of alpha than earlier methods, promises more
effective prediction of requests for frequently accessed tiles for
better caching and load balancing.

Abstract:
Bibliometric techniques are not yet widely used to enhance retrieval
processes in digital libraries, although they offer value-added effects
for users. In this paper we will explore how statistical modelling of
scholarship, such as Bradfordizing or network analysis of coauthorship
network, can improve retrieval services for specific communities, as
well as for large, cross-domain large collections. This paper aims to
raise awareness of the missing link between information retrieval (IR)
and bibliometrics / *scientometrics* and to create a common ground for
the incorporation of bibliometric-enhanced services into retrieval at
the digital library interface.

This paper aims to
raise awareness of the missing link between information retrieval (IR)
and bibliometrics / scientometrics and to create a common ground for the
incorporation of bibliometric-enhanced services into retrieval at the
digital library interface.

Abstract:
Researchers commonly use co-occurrence counts to assess the similarity
of objects. This paper illustrates how traditional association measures
can lead to misguided significance tests of co-occurrence in settings
where the usual multinomial sampling assumptions do not hold. I propose
a Monte Carlo permutation test that preserves the original distributions
of the co-occurrence data. I illustrate the test on a dataset of
organizational categorization, in which I investigate the relations
between organizational categories (such as "Argentine restaurants" and
"Steakhouses").

Abstract:
Aims and objectivesTo analyse systematic review articles published in
the top 10 nursing journals to determine the quality of the methods
employed within them.
BackgroundSystematic review is defined as a scientific research method
that synthesises high-quality scientific knowledge on a given topic. The
number of such reviews in nursing science has increased dramatically
during recent years, but their methodological quality has not previously
been assessed.
DesignA review of the literature using a narrative approach.
MethodsRanked impact factor scores for nursing journals were obtained
from the Journal Citation Report database of the Institute of Scientific
Information (ISI Web of Knowledge). All issues from the years 2009 and
2010 of the top 10 ranked journals were included. CINAHL and MEDLINE
databases were searched to locate studies using the search terms
systematic review' and systematic literature review'. A total of 39
eligible studies were identified. Their methodological quality was
evaluated through the specific criteria of quality assessment,
description of synthesis and strengths and weaknesses reported in the
included studies.
ResultsMost of the eligible systematic reviews included several
different designs or types of quantitative study. The majority included
a quality assessment, and a total of 17 different criteria were
identified. The method of synthesis was mentioned in about half of the
reviews, the most common being narrative synthesis. The weaknesses of
reviews were discussed, while strengths were rarely highlighted.
ConclusionThe methodological quality of the systematic reviews examined
varied considerably, although they were all published in nursing
journals with a high-impact factor.
Relevance to clinical practiceDespite the fact that systematic reviews
are considered the most robust source of research evidence, they vary in
methodological quality. This point is important to consider in clinical
practice when applying the results to patient care.

Abstract:
Sustainability policy in the early 2000s is based on and therefore
influenced by scientific literature on 'transition'. The importance of
this link has inspired the authors to explore the structure of
cooperating authors and citation networks in the field. In order to
understand 'transition' literature, we compare it with an alternative
term for change, 'transformation', which is also used in the context of
socio-technical shifts towards sustainability. We expose the different
structures of these fields with an overview of keywords, key references,
key authors, and the coherence between references and authors.
By analysing co-author and citation networks, we find large differences
in these groups of documents. The transition literature is characterised
by a large network of directly and indirectly cooperating authors with
clear clusters; transformation literature contains smaller author
networks. Key transition authors are predominantly Dutch. They
repeatedly write together and cite each other's work. The transition
literature is tightly knit with high degrees of internal references and
a clearly distinguishable core. Transformation literature has fewer
connections between authors and articles. The connecting articles, each
with many global citations, form its basis.
This analysis can be used as a step to continue the debate on the role
of transition and transformation literature in sustainability and
renewable energy policy. The transformation literature teaches us that
older streams of thought are still relevant and may be used as 'glue'
for linking change with respect to sustainable energy to wider
developments. Rediscovering existing literature in new combinations may
lead to promising new views on sustainable energy. (C) 2013 The Authors.
