Abstract:
The emergence of neurology as a separate specialty from internal
medicine and psychiatry took several decades, starting at the end of the
nineteenth century. This can be adequately reconstructed by focusing on
the establishment of specialized journals, societies, university chairs,
the invention and application of specific instruments, medical
practices, and certainly also the publication of pivotal textbooks in
the field. Particularly around 1900, the German-speaking countries
played an integral role in this process. In this article, one aspect is
extensively explored, notably the publication (in the twentieth century)
of three comprehensive and influential multivolume and multiauthor
handbooks entirely devoted to neurology. All available volumes of Max
Lewandowsky's Handbuch der Neurologie (1910-1914) and the Handbuch der
Neurologie (1935-1937) of Oswald Bumke and Otfrid Foerster were
analyzed. The handbooks were then compared with Pierre Vinken's and
George Bruyn's Handbook of Clinical Neurology (1968-2002). Over the span
of nearly a century these publications became ever more comprehensive
and developed into a global, encompassing project as is reflected in the
increasing number of foreign authors. Whereas the first two handbooks
were published mainly in German, Vinken & Bruyn was eventually published
entirely in English, indicating the general changes in the scientific
language of neurology after World War II. Distinctions include the
uniformity of the series, manner of editorial involvement, thematic
comprehensiveness, inclusion of volume editors in Vinken & Bruyn, and
the provision of index volumes. The increasing use of authorities in
various neurological subspecialties is an important factor by which
these handbooks contrast with many compact neurological textbooks that
were available at the time. For historiographical purposes, the three
neurological handbooks considered here were important sources for the
general study of the history of medicine and science and the history of
neurology in particular. Moreover, they served as important catalyzers
of the emergence of neurology as a new clinical specialty during the
first decades of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Purpose - The aim of this study is to analyse the disciplinary coverage
of Thomson Reuters' Book Citation Index database focusing on publisher
presence, impact and specialisation.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors conducted a descriptive study
in which they examined coverage by discipline, publisher distribution by
field and country of publication, and publisher impact. For this purpose
the Thomson Reuters' subject categories were aggregated into 15
disciplines.
Findings - Humanities and social sciences comprise 30 per cent of the
total share of this database. Most of the disciplines are covered by
very few publishers mainly from the UK and USA (75.05 per cent of the
books), in fact 33 publishers hold 90 per cent of the whole share.
Regarding publisher impact, 80.5 per cent of the books and chapters
remained uncited. Two serious errors were found in this database: the
Book Citation Index does not retrieve all citations for books and
chapters; and book citations do not include citations to their chapters.
Originality/value - There are currently no studies analysing in depth
the coverage of this novel database which covers monographs.

Abstract:
Purpose - The paper aims to develop a new method for potential relations
retrieval. It aims to find common aspects between co-occurrence analysis
and ontology to build a model of semantic information retrieval based on
co-occurrence analysis.
Design/methodology/approach - This paper used a literature review,
co-occurrence analysis, ontology build and other methods to design a
model and process of semantic information retrieval based on
co-occurrence analysis. Archaeological data from Wuhan University
Library's bibliographic retrieval systems was used for experimental
analysis.
Findings - The literature review found that semantic information
retrieval research mainly concentrates on ontology-based query
techniques, semantic annotation and semantic relation retrieval.
Moreover most recent systems can only achieve obvious relations
retrieval. Ontology and co-occurrence analysis have strong similarities
in theoretical ideas, data types, expressions, and applications.
Research limitations/implications - The experiment data came from a
Chinese university which perhaps limits its usefulness elsewhere.
Practical implications - This paper constructed a model to understand
potential relations retrieval. An experiment proved the feasibility of
co-occurrence analysis used in semantic information retrieval. Compared
with traditional retrieval, semantic information retrieval based on
co-occurrence analysis is more user-friendly.
Originality/value - This study is one of the first to combine
co-occurrence analysis with semantic information retrieval to find
detailed relationships.

Abstract:
Purpose - The web application presented in this paper allows for an
analysis to reveal centres of excellence in different fields worldwide
using publication and citation data. Only specific aspects of
institutional performance are taken into account and other aspects such
as teaching performance or societal impact of research are not
considered. The purpose of this paper is to address these issues.
Design/methodology/approach - Based on data gathered from Scopus,
field-specific excellence can be identified in institutions where
highly-cited papers have been frequently published.
Findings - The web application (www.excellencemapping.net) combines both
a list of institutions ordered by different indicator values and a map
with circles visualising indicator values for geocoded institutions.
Originality/value - Compared to the mapping and ranking approaches
introduced hitherto, our underlying statistics (multi-level models) are
analytically oriented by allowing the estimation of values for the
number of excellent papers for an institution which are statistically
more appropriate than the observed values; the calculation of confidence
intervals as measures of accuracy for the institutional citation impact;
the comparison of a single institution with an "average" institution in
a subject area: and the direct comparison of at least two institutions.

THE CHANGING SIZE DISTRIBUTION OF U.S. TRADE UNIONS AND ITS DESCRIPTION BY PARETO'S DISTRIBUTION

Abstract:
The size distribution of trade unions in the United States and changes
in this distribution are documented. Because the most pro-found changes
are taking place among very large unions, these are subject to special
analysis by invoking Pareto's distribution-a new application of this
distribution. Extensions to trade union wealth and to Britain are
broached. The role of the public sector in these changes receives
particular attention. A simple model helps account both for the
logarithmic distribution of union membership and for the contrasting
experiences of public- and private-sector unions since the 1970s.

Abstract:
The importance of a published paper to a particular area is reflected in
the quantity of citations obtained from peers. In burns, it is unknown
which papers have been the most influential on this specialty. The
purpose of our study was to identify the 100 most cited papers in burns
and to analyze their characteristics. Twenty-seven journals were chosen
for analysis. These included high impact factor scientific journals and
journals dedicated to burns and trauma. Only twelve of these journals
contributed to the 100 most cited papers in burns and we analyzed each
paper individually looking at its subject matter, authorship, article
type, institution, country and year of publication. Our citation
analysis revealed an interesting mix of clinical and scientific papers
that documents the key landmarks in burn care over the past 66 years.

Abstract:
This article analyzes the sources cited in articles published in two
linguistics journals, Applied Linguistics and Journal of Linguistics,
from 2001 to 2010. A retrospective descriptive study was conducted using
bibliometric indicators, such as types of cited sources, timeliness of
cited sources, authorship patterns, rank lists of the most frequently
cited journals and authors, degree of research collaboration, and yearly
distribution of articles in the journals. A total of 884 papers were
reviewed. The papers analyzed provided a total of 15,283 bibliographic
references, with an average of 17.2 citations per paper. References to
books and monographs dominated, making up 53.3 percent of citations,
while references to journals accounted for 35.9 percent. More than 70
percent of the cited sources exceeded ten years old. Findings also
revealed that sole authorship dominated reports on linguistics research.
Single-authored sources constituted 63.2 percent of the cited works,
while 36.8 percent had multiple authors. The degree of collaboration in
linguistics research was very low, with joint research projects making
up only 0.37 percent of the articles. Twenty-three most frequently cited
journals were identified, with Applied Linguistics and Linguistic
Inquiry ranking first and second, respectively. Similarly, twenty-eight
frequently cited authors were identified, with Noarn Chomsky ranking
first. This study would be useful for linguistics research and for
collection development of libraries, particularly academic libraries
that need to support researchers in linguistics.
