Web of Science - Open Access Flags - Journal or Article Attribute?

Iain,

As far as I know, this is done at the journal level by matching with the DOAJ directory. So freely available articles in hybrid journals are not flagged. Do publishers provide any indication in the articles' records that would make it possible for indexing services (such als WoS, Scopus but also Worldcat and others) to know which records are OA and which not?

Apologies, lack of clarity in my question. I too observed that PLOS ONE's articles were listed as OA, although last week they had some listed as OA, and some not. Hence my curiosity as to whether it was an article or journal attribute. Whatever the mechanism, it is in flux. So I'm going to hold off on using this flag for analytical purposes until things have become a little more stable.

Just a very little investigation shows that PLoS ONE is clearly indicated as an OA journal in Web of Science, despite the fact that it is not listed at http://science.thomsonreuters.com/cgi-bin/linksj/opensearch.cgi

Recently Web of Science pushed out a new release which includes an open access flag. This allows a user to segment a result set by whether the records are open access or not.

I'm interested to know if this is an article level assignment, and would identify OA articles in a hybrid journal, or indeed Green OA, or whether it is a merely a journal attribute? Where is this information being sourced from?

The Open Access journal list here is a little patchy:

There are five PLOS journals, but no PLOS ONE. How can new additions to this list be suggested?
