Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The quality and quantity of published research papers are
important in both scientific and technology fields. Although there are
several bibliometric studies based on citation analysis, very few have
focused on research related to Traditional Chinese Medicine in China.
METHODS: The bibliometric method used in this study included the
following focuses: publication outputs for each year, paper type,
language of publication, distribution of internationally collaborative
countries, sources of funding, authorization number, distribution of
institutes regarding collaborative publications, research fields,
distribution of outputs in journals, citation data, and h-index.
RESULTS: A total of 3809 papers published from 1995 to 2012 were
extracted from the science citation index (SCI). The cumulative number
of papers from all six universities is constantly increasing. The United
States attained the dominant position regarding complementary and
alternative medicine research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the
greatest participator in collaborative efforts. Research field analysis
showed that the research mainly focused on pharmacology pharmacy,
chemistry, integrative complementary medicine, plant sciences, and
biochemistry molecular biology. The Shanghai University of Chinese
Medicine had the most citations.
CONCLUSION: In recent years, in terms of SCI papers, the six Traditional
Chinese Medicine universities studied here have made great advances in
scientific research. (C) 2013 JTCM. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Background: A number of scientific papers on yellow fever have been
published but no broad scientometric analysis on the published research
of yellow fever has been reported.
The aim of the article based study was to provide an in-depth evaluation
of the yellow fever field using large-scale data analysis and employment
of bibliometric indicators of production and quantity.
Methods: Data were retrieved from the Web of Science database (WoS) and
analyzed as part of the NewQis platform. Then data were extracted from
each file, transferred to databases and visualized as diagrams.
Partially by means of density-equalizing mapping makes the findings
clear and emphasizes the output of the analysis.
Results: In the study period from 1900 to 2012 a total of 5,053 yellow
fever-associated items were published by 79 countries. The United States
(USA) having the highest publication rate at 42% (n = 751) followed by
far from Brazil (n = 203), France (n = 149) and the United Kingdom (n =
113). The most productive journals are the "Public Health Reports", the
"American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene" and the "Journal of
Virology". The gender analysis showed an overall steady increase of
female authorship from 1950 to 2011. Brazil is the only country of the
five most productive countries with a higher proportion of female
scientists.
Conclusions: The present data shows an increase in research productivity
over the entire study period, in particular an increase of female
scientists. Brazil shows a majority of female authors, a fact that is
confirmed by other studies.

Abstract:
Background: To compare the publication and citation rate within the
areas of drug abuse and dependence research in Europe with that in the
USA. Methods: This is a bibliometric study using the Thomson Reuters Web
of Knowledge as data source, 40 key words were used as search terms, but
certain scientific publications not concerning the issue were excluded.
Scientific publications from Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany,
Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the USA were studied.
The number of publications in each country and in each year in addition
to the citation indices for these publications was retrieved. Results:
Approximately two thirds of the publications came from the USA. Both in
absolute and relative figures, Europe lagged behind. The trend over the
last decade was a greater gap between the amount of research performed
in Europe versus the USA. There were thematic differences. Smaller
European countries had a greater relative publication rate. The
citations were relatively evenly distributed. Conclusions: It has been
claimed that 85% of the world's research within the field of drug abuse
and dependence is carried out in the USA. This study challenges this
figure, but European research within this field is lagging behind.

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the nanotribology research output at global
level using scientometric tools. The SCOPUS database was used to
retrieve records related to the nanotribology research for the period
1996-2010. Publications were counted on a fractional basis. The level of
collaboration and its citation impact were examined. The performance of
the most productive countries, institutes and most preferred journals is
assessed. Various visualization tools such as the Sci(2) tool and Ucinet
were employed. The USA ranked top in terms of number of publications,
citations per paper and h-index, while Switzerland published a higher
percentage of international collaborative papers. The most productive
institution was Tsinghua University followed by Ohio State University
and Lanzhou Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS. The most preferred
journals were Tribology Letters, Wear and Journal of Japanese Society of
Tribologists. The result of author keywords analysis reveals that
Molecular Dynamics, MEMS, Hard Disk and Diamond like Carbon are major
research topics.

Abstract:
We thought an appropriate way to celebrate the seminal contribution of
Kier is to explore his influence on science, looking for the impact of
his research through the citation of his scientific production. From a
bibliometric approach the impact of Kier's work is addressed as an
individual within a community. Reviewing data from his curriculum vitae,
as well as from the ISI Web of Knowledge (ISI), his role within the
scientific community is established and the way his scientific results
circulate is studied. His curriculum vitae is explored emphasising the
approaches he used in his research activities and the social ties with
other actors of the community. The circulation of Kier's publications in
the ISI is studied as a means for spreading and installing his discourse
within the community. The citation patterns found not only show the
usage of Kier's scientific results, but also open the possibility to
identify some characteristics of this discursive community, such as a
common vocabulary and common research goals. The results show an
interdisciplinary research work that consolidates a scientific community
on the topic of drug discovery.

Abstract:
Innovation in the last decade has endowed nanotechnology with an
assortment of tools for drug delivery system, imaging, and sensing in
cancer research. These rapidly emerging tools are indicative of a
burgeoning field ready to expand into medical applications. The aim of
this study is to analyze the applications of nanotechnology in oncology
with bibliometric methods and evaluate development in this field.
Literature search was performed using PubMed search engines with MeSH
terms (all)-nanotechnology, nanomedicine, nanoparticle, nanocapsules,
micellar systems, and oncology or cancer or neoplasms. Within 2,543
articles from 2002 to 2011 in over 50 medical magazines from over 30
countries, we did a series analysis on these articles' countries,
keywords, and authors. Our results show that articles in nanotechnology
in oncology are increasing year by year, especially in recent years.
Quantity and quality of the articles are becoming more and influential.
In the global research, the USA is leading in this field, accounting for
half above of the whole articles, followed by countries like Japan,
Germany, and France and also some emerging nations like China, in the
second place, and India. Subjects like nanoparticles, tumor marker, and
drug delivery are the common research focus. So, with more and more
scientists' interests and attention drawn to this field, it is likely to
make major breakthroughs in the coming years.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the current intellectual
foundation of four leading academic journals within the field of
logistics and supply chain management. We were interested to identify
the most frequently quoted publications as well as their impact on
logistics research. We examined 17,000 references of 412 papers and
further analysed the 39 top-references with the means of
multidimensional scaling (MDS), cluster- and factor analysis. We were
able to identify a mix of textbooks and articles from academic journals
and revealed a journal-specific citation pattern, not only in the choice
of textbooks but also in the choice of referenced methodology papers. We
were also able to identify citation streams and citation areas, where it
was surprising to find so many general socio-scientific papers and
general papers explaining the character of the field.

Abstract:
PURPOSE: To compare orthopedics publications from USA, Japan and China.
METHODS: Scientific papers belong to "Orthopedics" category of Science
Citation Index Expanded subject categories were retrieved from the
"PubMed" and "Web of Knowledge" online databases.
RESULTS: In the field of orthopedics, the annual number increased
significantly from 2000 to 2012 in the three countries (p<0.001). The
share of articles increased significantly in China, but decreased
significantly in Japan and USA (p<0.05). In 2012, USA contributed 35.3%
of the total world output in orthopedics field and ranked 1st; Japan
contributed 5.9% and ranked 4th; China contributed 5.2% and ranked 5th.
Publications from USA had the highest accumulated IFs and the highest
total citations of articles (USA > Japan > China, p<0.001). Average IF
from USA was much higher than Japan and China (p<0.001). USA published
the most articles in the top ten orthopedics journals (USA (14355) >
Japan (1702) > China (487), p<0.01).
CONCLUSION: Although China has undergone significant increase in annual
number and percentage of scientific publication in orthopedics journals,
it still lags far behind USA and Japan in the field of orthopedics in
terms of quantity and quality.

Abstract:
Determining the quality of research outlets is important for Operations
Management (OM) for reasons well documented in the published literature.
Over the past few decades, utilising several different methodologies
from a variety of perspectives, 15 studies have assessed the quality of
journals that publish OM research. The published results are
inconsistent in that the relative quality of journals varies from one
study to the next and no single set of OM journals is unanimously
recognised as being the top set. Historically, OM researchers have
published in a wide variety of journals, utilised a variety of research
methodologies and studied a broad range of topics. Given that each of
the 15 studies assessed journal quality from a different perspective and
utilised different methodologies, they represent a diversity of opinions
regarding the OM field and add to the knowledge base regarding the
quality of OM research outlets. In this paper, we combine the published
results in a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model to assess the quality
of the most visible journals that publish OM research. DEA is a linear
programming tool for the evaluation of decision-making units and its use
in our context (a meta-analysis of journal quality studies) is a new
application of the technique. Our results suggest that the top 10
outlets for OM research include five journals that are considered OM
dedicated, two Operations Research journals, one Engineering journal and
two Interdisciplinary journals.

Abstract:
Citation analyses provide valuable insights into the usage of library
collections and assist in collection management decision-making;
however, there are few engineering citation analyses of faculty
publications. This study addresses that gap through an analysis of 3488
citations from aerospace engineering faculty publications by source,
format, age, and subject. Local holdings were assessed based on the
80/20 rule and journal titles ranked. In addition to supporting citation
patterns identified in previous citation analyses, this study revealed
some novel relationships involving formats and subjects. The results of
this study have implications for collection management. (C) 2013

Abstract:
During the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013, two librarians from the
University of Kansas Libraries conducted a citation analysis of faculty
publications in three broad disciplinary areas: humanities, social
sciences, and science. The main purpose of research was to find out if
the library provides adequate support to faculty researchers. The
authors confirmed that KU Libraries provide access to the majority of
items used by campus researchers. In addition, the findings will be used
in collection management decisions, such as demand driven acquisition.
Finally, the authors analyzed additional citation analysis studies in
order to establish external benchmarks for their results. (C) 2013

Abstract:
In this paper we report the existence of long-range memory in the
opening moves of a chronologically ordered set of chess games using an
extensive chess database. We used two mapping rules to build discrete
time series and analyzed them using two methods for detecting long-range
correlations; rescaled range analysis and detrended fluctuation
analysis. We found that long-range memory is related to the level of the
players. When the database is filtered according to player levels we
found differences in the persistence of the different subsets. For high
level players, correlations are stronger at long time scales; whereas in
intermediate and low level players they reach the maximum value at
shorter time scales. This can be interpreted as a signature of the
different strategies used by players with different levels of expertise.
These results are robust against the assignation rules and the method
employed in the analysis of the time series. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All

Abstract:
Analysis of highly cited papers provides unique insights into the status
of research in a given field. We sought to identify the top 100 most
highly cited papers in the field of anorexia nervosa (AN). A free,
publically accessible software was used to conduct an online search of
publications with accompanying citation data. Search terms were selected
to focus on papers dealing predominantly with AN, and the results
manually screened to exclude out-of-scope publications. Papers in
bulimia nervosa, eating disorder not otherwise specified and
binge-eating disorder, were not included. The top 100 most highly cited
papers in the AN field were identified. Of these, 34 garnered greater
than 400 citations, classifying them as citation classics'. These works
were divided into five categories, those dealing with epidemiological
trends, medical/psychiatric comorbidities, treatment, mechanisms of
disease and measurement/classification. Publications examining the
epidemiology and underlying mechanisms of AN account for the majority of
the top 100 papers. Scales and measurement tools have had the greatest
impact, garnering the greatest number of average citations per paper.
Although reasonably diverse, the top 100 papers highlight areas still
lagging behind, including the neuroscience of AN as well as research
into novel treatment strategies. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons,

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The quality and quantity of published research papers are
important in both scientific and technology fields. Although there are
several bibliometric studies based on citation analysis, very few have
focused on research related to Traditional Chinese Medicine in China.
METHODS: The bibliometric method used in this study included the
following focuses: publication outputs for each year, paper type,
language of publication, distribution of internationally collaborative
countries, sources of funding, authorization number, distribution of
institutes regarding collaborative publications, research fields,
distribution of outputs in journals, citation data, and h-index.
RESULTS: A total of 3809 papers published from 1995 to 2012 were
extracted from the science citation index (SCI). The cumulative number
of papers from all six universities is constantly increasing. The United
States attained the dominant position regarding complementary and
alternative medicine research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the
greatest participator in collaborative efforts. Research field analysis
showed that the research mainly focused on pharmacology pharmacy,
chemistry, integrative complementary medicine, plant sciences, and
biochemistry molecular biology. The Shanghai University of Chinese
Medicine had the most citations.
CONCLUSION: In recent years, in terms of SCI papers, the six Traditional
Chinese Medicine universities studied here have made great advances in
scientific research. (C) 2013 JTCM. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
There have been a substantial number of studies suggesting possible
health benefits from polyphenols in wine, especially red wine. These
hypothetical effects, in addition to those of alcohol, are attributed by
many to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the polyphenols.
The aim of this paper was to map the scientific research on wine and
health by using *bibliographic* analyses of papers published during the
period 2002-2011. Papers were published in 535 different journals and in
106 different subject categories, the most productive journals being the
Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Food Chemistry and Molecular
Nutrition, and Food Research, and the most productive subject category
being food science and technology. Institutions in the main network of
collaboration between centers were primarily located in France, Italy,
and the United State. The number of papers on the medicinal use of wine
has been dramatically rising in recent years because of the increased
awareness of its importance in modern society. We emphasize the large
distribution of information among numerous journals and the
multidisciplinary nature of the topic. In the network of co-words, we
observe the central role played by the terms "resveratrol", "wine", and
"polyphenols".

Abstract:
This study aims to assess the nanotribology research output at global
level using *scientometric* tools.

Abstract:
*Zipf*'s law is the major regularity of statistical linguistics that has
served as a prototype for rank-frequency relations and scaling laws in
natural sciences. Here we show that *Zipf*'s law-together with its
applicability for a single text and its generalizations to high and low
frequencies including hapax legomena-can be derived from assuming that
the words are drawn into the text with random probabilities. Their a
priori density relates, via the Bayesian statistics, to the mental
lexicon of the author who produced the text.

Abstract:
The Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program is one of
the most important initiatives in translational medical funding. The
quantitative evaluation of the efficiency and performance of the CTSA
program has a significant referential meaning for the decision making of
global translational medical funding. Using science mapping and
*scientometric* analytic tools, this study quantitatively analyzed the
scientific articles funded by the CTSA program. The results of the study
showed that the quantitative productivities of the CTSA program had a
stable increase since 2008. In addition, the emerging trends of the
research funded by the CTSA program covered clinical and basic medical
research fields. The academic benefits from the CTSA program were
assisting its members to build a robust academic home for the Clinical
and Translational Science and to attract other financial support. This
study provided a quantitative evaluation of the CTSA program based on
science mapping and *scientometric* analysis. Further research is
required to compare and optimize other quantitative methods and to
integrate various research results.

Abstract:
Background: A number of scientific papers on yellow fever have been
published but no broad *scientometric* analysis on the published
research of yellow fever has been reported.

Abstract:
We examine the research output from the Balkan Countries in the fields
of physics and chemistry registered in the databases of Science Citation
Index and SCOPUS for the years 1996-2010. Over the years, the relative
contribution from the area has increased on average by approximately 50%
and represents around 4% of the world overall production. However, the
diversity of the Balkan region is also reflected in the performance of
individual countries. Although each of them shows growth in the last
decade in absolute terms, relative downturn is evident in several cases.
Data are provided about cooperation among Balkan countries.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The quality and quantity of published research papers are
important in both scientific and technology fields. Although there are
several bibliometric studies based on citation analysis, very few have
focused on research related to Traditional Chinese Medicine in China.
METHODS: The bibliometric method used in this study included the
following focuses: publication outputs for each year, paper type,
language of publication, distribution of internationally collaborative
countries, sources of funding, authorization number, distribution of
institutes regarding collaborative publications, research fields,
distribution of outputs in journals, citation data, and h-index.
RESULTS: A total of 3809 papers published from 1995 to 2012 were
extracted from the science citation index (SCI). The cumulative number
of papers from all six universities is constantly increasing. The United
States attained the dominant position regarding complementary and
alternative medicine research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the
greatest participator in collaborative efforts. Research field analysis
showed that the research mainly focused on pharmacology pharmacy,
chemistry, integrative complementary medicine, plant sciences, and
biochemistry molecular biology. The Shanghai University of Chinese
Medicine had the most citations.
CONCLUSION: In recent years, in terms of SCI papers, the six Traditional
Chinese Medicine universities studied here have made great advances in
scientific research. (C) 2013 JTCM. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Citation analyses provide valuable insights into the usage of library
collections and assist in collection management decision-making;
however, there are few engineering citation analyses of faculty
publications.
