Abstract:
We examined drivers of article citations using 776 articles that were
published from 1990 to 2012 in a broad-based and high-impact social
sciences journal, The Leadership Quarterly. These articles had 1191
unique authors having published and received in total (at the time of
their most recent article published in our dataset) 16,817 articles and
284,777 citations, respectively. Our models explained 66.6% of the
variance in citations and showed that quantitative, review, method, and
theory articles were significantly more cited than were qualitative
articles or agent-based simulations. As concerns quantitative articles,
which constituted the majority of the sample, our model explained 80.3%
of the variance in citations; some methods (e.g., use of SEM) and
designs (e.g., meta-analysis), as well as theoretical approaches (e.g.,
use of transformational, charismatic, or visionary type-leadership
theories) predicted higher article citations. Regarding statistical
conclusion validity of quantitative articles, articles having
endogeneity threats received significantly fewer citations than did
those using a more robust design or an estimation procedure that ensured
correct causal estimation. We make several general recommendations on
how to improve research practice and article citations. (C) 2013

Abstract:
Glaeser E. L., Ponzetto G. A. M. and Tobio K. Cities, skills and
regional change, Regional Studies. One approach to urban areas
emphasizes the existence of certain immutable relationships, such as
*Zipf*'s or Gibrat's law. An alternative view is that urban change
reflects individual responses to changing tastes or technologies. This
paper examines almost 200 years of regional change in the United States
and finds that few, if any, growth relationships remain constant,
including Gibrat's law. Education does a reasonable job of explaining
urban resilience in recent decades, but it does not seem to predict
county growth a century ago. After reviewing this evidence, a simple
model of regional change is presented and estimated, where education
increases the level of entrepreneurship. Human capital spillovers occur
at the city level because skilled workers produce more product varieties
and thereby increase labour demand. It is found that skills are
associated with growth in productivity or entrepreneurship, not with
growth in quality of life, at least outside of the West. It is also
found that skills seem to have depressed housing supply growth in the
West, but not in other regions, which supports the view that educated
residents in that region have fought for tougher land-use controls.
Evidence is also presented that skills have had a disproportionately
large impact on unemployment during the current recession.

Abstract:
Sequences of two consecutive days of solar irradiation (global
horizontal and direct normal) have been studied here by different
approaches. The frequency vs. rank relationships have been analyzed as
an attempt to explore whether the Zifp's law is fulfilled, yielding to a
partial fulfillment and observing that a good logarithmic fit can be
applied to the data in the whole range. In addition, the pdfs of
increments in two consecutive daily irradiation values are also studied,
showing a relationship between persistence and the coefficients of the
logarithmic fit. Finally, it has been shown that a Markov process can
represent properly sequences of two consecutive daily irradiation
values, for both global horizontal and direct normal components. Thus,
synthetic series can be generated by Markov chains for characterizing
daily global and direct irradiation. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Abstract:
The author analyzes retracted biomedical literature to determine if open
access and fee-for-access works differ in terms of the practice and
effectiveness of retraction. Citation and content analysis were applied
to articles grouped by accessibility (libre, gratis, and fee for access)
for various bibliometric attributes. Open access literature does not
differ from fee-for-access literature in terms of impact factor,
detection of error, or change in postretraction citation rates.
Literature found in the PubMed Central Open Access subset provides
detailed information about the nature of the anomaly more often than
less accessible works. Open access literature appears to be of similar
reliability and integrity as the population of biomedical literature in
general, with the added value of being more forthcoming about the nature
of errors when they are identified.

Abstract:
Background: Bibliometric studies are increasingly being used for
research assessment by involving the application of statistical methods
to scientific publications to obtain the bibliographics for each
country. The main objective of this study was to analyse the research
productivity originating from 13 Middle Eastern Arab (MEA) countries
with articles published in toxicology journals.
Methods: Data from January 1, 2003 till December 31, 2012 were searched
for documents with specific words in the toxicology field as a "source
title" in any one of the 13 MEA countries. Research productivity was
evaluated based on a methodology developed and used in other
bibliometric studies. Research productivity was adjusted to the national
population and nominal gross domestic product (GDP) per capita.
Results: Documents (n = 1,240) were retrieved from 73 international
peer-reviewed toxicology journals. The h-index of the retrieved
documents was 39. Of the 73 journal titles, 52 (69.9%) have their IF
listed in the ISI Journal Citation Reports 2012; 198 documents (16.0%)
were published in journals that had no official IF. After adjusting for
economy and population power, Egypt (193.6), Palestine (18.1), Kingdom
of Saudi Arabia (KSA) (13.0), and Jordan (11.5) had the highest research
productivity. Countries with large economies, such as the Kuwait, United
Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, tended to rank relatively low after
adjustment of GDP. The total number of citations at the time of data
analysis (August 4, 2013) was 10,991, with a median (interquartile
range) of 4 (1-11). MEA collaborated more with countries in the MEA
regions (16.7%), especially KSA, Egypt, and UAE, followed by Europe
(14.4%), especially with the United Kingdom and Germany.
Conclusions: The present data show a promising rise and a good start for
toxicology research activity in toxicology journals in the Arab world.
Research output is low in some countries, which can be improved by
investing in more international and national collaborative research
projects in the field of toxicology.

Abstract:
Using the option Analyze Results with the Web of Science, one can
directly generate overlays onto global journal maps of science. The maps
are based on the 10,000+ journals contained in the Journal Citation
Reports (JCR) of the Science and Social Sciences Citation Indices
(2011). The disciplinary diversity of the retrieval is measured in terms
of Rao-Stirling's quadratic entropy (Izsak & Papp, 1995). Since this
indicator of interdisciplinarity is normalized between 0 and 1,
interdisciplinarity can be compared among document sets and across
years, cited or citing. The colors used for the overlays are based on
Blondel, Guillaume, Lambiotte, and Lefebvre's (2008) community-finding
algorithms operating on the relations among journals included in the
JCR. The results can be exported from VOSViewer with different options
such as proportional labels, heat maps, or cluster density maps. The
maps can also be web-started or animated (e.g., using PowerPoint). The
citing dimension of the aggregated journal-journal citation matrix was
found to provide a more comprehensive description than the matrix based
on the cited archive. The relations between local and global maps and
their different functions in studying the sciences in terms of journal
literatures are further discussed: Local and global maps are based on
different assumptions and can be expected to serve different purposes
for the explanation.

Abstract:
STEM, a set of fields that includes science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics; allied disciplines ranging from environmental,
agricultural, and earth sciences to life science and computer science;
and education and training in these fields, is clearly at the top of the
list of priority funding areas for governments, including the United
States government. The U.S. has 11 federal agencies dedicated to
supporting programs and providing funding for research and curriculum
development. The domain of STEM education has significant implications
in preparing the desired workforce with the requisite knowledge,
developing appropriate curricula, providing teachers the necessary
professional development, focusing research dollars on areas that have
maximum impact, and developing national educational policy and
standards. A complex undertaking such as STEM education, which attracts
interest and valuable resources from a number of stakeholders needs to
be well understood. In light of this, we attempt to describe the
underlying structure of STEM education, its core areas, and their
relationships through co-word analyses of the titles, keywords, and
abstracts of the relevant literature using visualization and
bibliometric mapping tools. Implications are drawn with respect to the
nature of STEM education as well as curriculum and policy development.

Abstract: Background: Bibliometric studies are increasingly being used for research assessment by involving the application of statistical methods to scientific publications to obtain the bibliographics for each country. The main objective of this study was to analyse the research productivity originating from 13 Middle Eastern Arab (MEA) countries with articles published in toxicology journals. Methods: Data from January 1, 2003 till December 31, 2012 were searched for documents with specific words in the toxicology field as a "source title" in any one of the 13 MEA countries. Research productivity was evaluated based on a methodology developed and used in other bibliometric studies. Research productivity was adjusted to the national population and nominal gross domestic product (GDP) per capita. Results: Documents (n = 1,240) were retrieved from 73 international peer-reviewed toxicology journals. The h-index of the retrieved documents was 39. Of the 73 journal titles, 52 (69.9%) have their IF listed in the ISI Journal Citation Reports 2012; 198 documents (16.0%) were published in journals that had no official IF. After adjusting for economy and population power, Egypt (193.6), Palestine (18.1), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) (13.0), and Jordan (11.5) had the highest research productivity. Countries with large economies, such as the Kuwait, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, tended to rank relatively low after adjustment of GDP. The total number of citations at the time of data analysis (August 4, 2013) was 10,991, with a median (interquartile range) of 4 (1-11). MEA collaborated more with countries in the MEA regions (16.7%), especially KSA, Egypt, and UAE, followed by Europe (14.4%), especially with the United Kingdom and Germany. Conclusions: The present data show a promising rise and a good start for toxicology research activity in toxicology journals in the Arab world. Research output is low in some countries, which can be improved by investing in more international and national collaborative research projects in the field of toxicology.

Abstract: Using the option Analyze Results with the Web of Science, one can directly generate overlays onto global journal maps of science. The maps are based on the 10,000+ journals contained in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of the Science and Social Sciences Citation Indices (2011). The disciplinary diversity of the retrieval is measured in terms of Rao-Stirling's quadratic entropy (Izsak & Papp, 1995). Since this indicator of interdisciplinarity is normalized between 0 and 1, interdisciplinarity can be compared among document sets and across years, cited or citing. The colors used for the overlays are based on Blondel, Guillaume, Lambiotte, and Lefebvre's (2008) community-finding algorithms operating on the relations among journals included in the JCR. The results can be exported from VOSViewer with different options such as proportional labels, heat maps, or cluster density maps. The maps can also be web-started or animated (e.g., using PowerPoint). The citing dimension of the aggregated journal-journal citation matrix was found to provide a more comprehensive description than the matrix based on the cited archive. The relations between local and global maps and their different functions in studying the sciences in terms of journal literatures are further discussed: Local and global maps are based on different assumptions and can be expected to serve different purposes for the explanation.

Abstract: STEM, a set of fields that includes science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; allied disciplines ranging from environmental, agricultural, and earth sciences to life science and computer science; and education and training in these fields, is clearly at the top of the list of priority funding areas for governments, including the United States government. The U.S. has 11 federal agencies dedicated to supporting programs and providing funding for research and curriculum development. The domain of STEM education has significant implications in preparing the desired workforce with the requisite knowledge, developing appropriate curricula, providing teachers the necessary professional development, focusing research dollars on areas that have maximum impact, and developing national educational policy and standards. A complex undertaking such as STEM education, which attracts interest and valuable resources from a number of stakeholders needs to be well understood. In light of this, we attempt to describe the underlying structure of STEM education, its core areas, and their relationships through co-word analyses of the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the relevant literature using visualization and bibliometric mapping tools. Implications are drawn with respect to the nature of STEM education as well as curriculum and policy development.

Abstract: Many studies report lower academic productivity among women. But are women less likely to get their research published in the first place? The evidence for potential gender bias in publication and impact is mixed. This article examines the gender dimension of scientific publication in international relations (IR) based on submission data for Journal of Peace Research for the period 1983-2008. It examines the gender gap in submissions and explores whether the perceived merit of a research paper is affected by the gender of the authors and reviewers. It also investigates whether the gender of the first author influences citation counts. The data show a clear but declining gender gap. They do not indicate any significant gender bias in publication success or citations.

Abstract: This paper applies a methodology utilized in economics to study citation patterns in two International Studies Association journals. The paper analyzes articles published in International Studies Quarterly (ISQ) and International Studies Perspectives (ISP) in 2005. Comparisons are made based on the sex of the authors of articles and the sex of the cited authors in each paper's bibliography. Empirical analyses suggest that male authors of ISQ and ISP articles are less likely to cite work by female scholars in comparison with female authors. Mixed-gender author teams are also significantly less likely to cite research by female scholars relative to female article authors.

Abstract: The present study analyzes the evolution of research activity carried out in the field of civil engineering. With this end in mind, all of the articles published in the category "Engineering, Civil" from the Web of Science from 1997 to 2011 have been analyzed using bibliometric methods. For each paper (107,623 papers, 96.2% in English) quantitative and qualitative parameters (number of weighted papers, impact factor, number of citations, h-index, international collaborations, number of authors, and research centers) were analyzed. With these indicators, rankings of the outstanding countries and research centers have been established including an analysis of evolution in said rankings over the years. The study is complemented by an analysis of the main research topics (through keywords) and by an analysis of the journals in the category. The results show great growth in research activity the number of articles and average impact factor has tripled since 1997. Eighty-seven percent of scientific production takes place in thirty countries. The countries of the GS stand out especially (except for Russia). The USA is the country with the highest production level (at 27% of the total and with 39 of the 100 most productive research centers). The spectacular increase in production and impact of China threatens the future domination of the USA. The increase in collaboration at all levels demonstrates greater complexity and structure of research. In the research carried out, more than 134,000 different keywords have been identified, "although only 1% appear in more than 100 articles. The rapid increase in the use of certain keywords and the decrease of others allows us to identify changes in research topics. In the majority of journals, there exists a clear relationship between impact factor and the level of internationalization and diffusion of said journals. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Objective(s): Citation tracking is an important method to analyze the scientific impact of journal articles and can be done through Scopus (SC), Google Scholar (GS), or ISI web of knowledge (WOS). In the current study, we analyzed the citations to 2011-2012 articles of Iranian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences (IJBMS) in these three resources. Material and Methods: The relevant data from SC, GS, and WOS official websites. Total number of citations, their overlap and unique citations of these three recourses were evaluated. Results: WOS and SC covered 100% and GS covered 97% of the IJBMS items. Totally, 37 articles were cited at least once in one of the studied resources. Total number of citations were 20, 30, and 59 in WOS, SC, and GS respectively. Forty citations of GS, 6 citation of SC, and 2 citations of WOS were unique. Conclusion: Every scientific resource has its own inaccuracies in providing citation analysis information. Citation analysis studies are better to be done each year to correct any inaccuracy as soon as possible. IJBMS has gained considerable scientific attention from wide range of high impact journals and through citation tracking method; this visibility can be traced more thoroughly.

Abstract: Background: A recent review of technical editing of research suggests that over one third of references cited in articles in medical journals have some inaccuracies and one fifth of quotations to references in these articles are not accurate. Methods: Two hundred and forty-nine citation references and 408 quotes from 25 articles published in 5 orthopaedic journals were randomly selected to determine referencing accuracy. The presence of citation errors was examined by 1 of the authors while the presence of quotation errors was determined by 2 of the authors. Full copies of articles as well as the references were obtained to compare the accuracies. Results: The total citation error rate was 41% (103 out of 249 references), and the total quotation error rate was 20% (80 out of 408 quotes) for the 5 orthopaedic journals. Conclusion: Citation and quotation errors were still relatively common in orthopaedic journals. While we did not identify any factors associated with citation and quotation errors, the use of technical editing may reduce the amount of citation errors.
