Abstract:
As Hispanic students continue to be an underrepresented cultural group
in higher education, researchers are called to uncover the challenging
and complex experience of this diverse group of students. Using the
constant comparative method, these researchers conducted a content
analysis of the qualitative research on the experiences of Hispanic
college students within the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences
(1979-2011). Of the 1,060 findings generated, only six qualitative
research articles met the inclusion criteria for this content analysis.
Eight themes emerged: past barriers, negative college experiences,
self-efficacy, positive feelings, succeeding, additional support,
cultural awakening, and hope. Discussion of two separate realities for
Hispanic college students is included.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Neural regeneration following nerve injury is an emerging
field that attracts extending interests all over the world.
OBJECTIVE: To use bibliometric indexes to track studies focusing on
neural regeneration, and to investigate the relationships among
geographic origin, countries and institutes, keywords in the published
articles, and especially focus on the region distribution, institution
distribution, as well as collaborations in Chinese papers indexed in the
Web of Science.
METHODS: A list of neural regeneration studies was generated by
searching the database of the Web of Science-Expanded using the term
"Neural Regenera(star)". Inclusive criteria: (1) articles in the field
of neural regeneration; (2) fundamental research on animals, clinical
trials and case reports; (3) article types: article, review, proceedings
paper, note, letter, editorial material, discussion, book chapter; (4)
year of publication: 2003-2012; and (5) citation database: Science
Citation Index-Expanded. Exclusive criteria: (1) articles requiring
manual searching or with access only by telephone; (2) unpublished
articles; and (3) corrections.
RESULTS: A total of 4 893 papers were retrieved from the Web of Science
published between 2003 and 2012. The papers covered 65 countries or
regions, of which the United States ranked first with 1 691 papers. The
most relevant papers were in the neurosciences and cell biology, and the
keyword "stem cell" was the most frequent. In recent years, China showed
a great increase in the number of papers. Over the entire 10 years,
there were 922 Chinese papers, with Jilin University ranking first with
58 articles. Chinese papers were published in connection with many
countries, including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
Among the connections, the papers published by the Chinese and the
American are 107, with the highest rate. With regard to funding, 689
articles were funded from various projects, occupying 74.72% of the
total amount. In these projects, National Foundation and Science and
Technology programs were the majority.
CONCLUSION: Our bibliometric analysis provides a historical perspective
on the progress of neural regeneration research. At present, the number
of articles addressing neural regeneration is increasing rapidly;
however, through analysis of citations it is clear that there is a long
way to go to improve the academic quality.

Abstract:
Blended learning, which combines face-to-face and online learning
modalities, is a heterogeneous and steadily developing area of design
and inquiry. With the expansion and maturation of blended learning
research, voices enter the conversation in increasing numbers and
diversity. This study continues the work begun by Halverson, Graham,
Spring, and Drysdale (2012), which determined the most frequently cited
books, edited book chapters, and articles on blended learning, as well
as the journals in which these highly cited articles appeared. After
finding where the conversations about blended learning were happening
and which scholars were at the forefront of these conversations, we now
look at what the conversations on blended learning are really about.
Using thematic analysis, we uncover the methodologies, research
questions, and theoretical frameworks in this scholarship, and then
discuss the implications of these findings for blended learning
research. In doing so, we promote further understanding of the center of
this emerging area of study. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
The number of citations that papers receive has become significant in
measuring researchers' scientific productivity, and such measurements
are important when one seeks career opportunities and research funding.
Skewed citation practices can thus have profound effects on academic
careers. We investigated (i) how frequently authors misinterpret
original information and (ii) how frequently authors inappropriately
cite reviews instead of the articles upon which the reviews are based.
To reach this aim, we carried a survey of ecology journals indexed in
the Web of Science and assessed the appropriateness of citations of
review papers. Reviews were significantly more often cited than regular
articles. In addition, 22% of citations were inaccurate, and another 15%
unfairly gave credit to the review authors for other scientists' ideas.
These practices should be stopped, mainly through more open discussion
among mentors, researchers and students.

Abstract:
Introduction. Disciplinarity and other forms of differentiation in
science have long been studied in the fields of science and technology
studies, information science and scientometrics. However, it is not
obvious whether these fields are building on each other's findings.
Methods. An analysis is made of 609 articles on disciplinarity selected
through a combination of automatic and manual methods published from
2000 to 2013. Analysis. Scientometric methods are used to determine how
the different fields approach the study of disciplinarity. It seeks to
establish how cognitively similar the approaches are, by exploring their
use of knowledge base (derived from reference lists) and of the
cognitive concepts used in the titles of works.
Results. The three fields have very distinct communities of
practitioners, but are similar cognitively. The three fields are using
as their knowledge base similar authors, although not necessarily the
same work by those authors. Both scientometrics and information science
draw from the science and technology studies literature, which is not
reciprocating. The similarity of terminology indicates that the three
fields are studying the same objects, but other indicators suggest that
they are actually interested in quite different aspects of those
objects.

Abstract:
Introduction. Specialization in science is a process that occurs over
time. The present paper presents a bibliometric method for measuring the
degree of specialization over time.
Methods. The method is based on bibliographic coupling, and counts the
percentage of recitations given in subsequent years. The method is
applied to a selection of core journals in library and information
science (1990-2012). The reference lists of each journal are compared
year by year, and the percentage of re-citations is calculated by
dividing the number of re-citations with the total number of citations
each year.
Results. The results indicate that the new measure adequately measures
the intended phenomenon (i.e. specialization). Yet, the levels of
re-citations and development over time may also partly be explained by
the obsolescence phenomenon. A study of the median citation age and the
level of specialization confirm a positive correlation. Yet, the low
r-squared value (R2=0,2811) suggests only a partial explanation of the
differences in levels of re-citation.
Conclusion. The new method seems to offer a valid technique for
measuring scientific specialization as a process. Yet, further studies
are required to confirm the results.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to conduct a historical review of psycho-oncology and supportive care research in Canada using citation analysis and to review the clinical impact of the research conducted by the most highly cited researchers. The lifetime journal publication records of 109 psycho-oncology and supportive care researchers in Canada were subject to citation analysis using the Scopus database, based on citations since 1996 of articles deemed relevant to psychosocial oncology and supportive care, excluding self-citations. Three primary types of analysis were performed for each individual: the number of citations for each journal publication, a summative citation count of all published articles, and the Scopus h-index. The top 20 psycho-oncology/supportive care researchers for each of five citation categories are presented: the number of citations for all publications; the number of citations for first-authored publications; the most highly cited first-authored publications; the Scopus h-index for all publications; and the Scopus h-index for first-authored publications. The three most highly cited Canadian psycho-oncology researchers are Dr. Kerry Courneya (University of Alberta), Dr. Lesley Degner, (University of Manitoba), and Dr. Harvey Chochinov (University of Manitoba). Citation analysis is useful for examining the research performance of psycho-oncology and supportive care researchers and identifying leaders among them.

Abstract: Over the past two decades, clean technologies (cleantech) have emerged as an important economic factor with remarkable progress. Fueled by growing concerns about climate change and diminishing fossil fuel resources, governments have put aggressive stimulus packages in place to support emerging technologies that drive cleantech businesses. The industry operates in highly regulated market conditions which in turn raises the question of whether economists have addressed private and public information requirements. To answer this question and to explore the relationship between environmental economics and clean technologies, this paper examines German literature using co-citation analysis methods. Based on the co-citation analysis of 588 documents, our results suggest that researchers have provided a rather small and fragmented set of business knowledge for the cleantech industry. Despite its economic and environmental importance, research on the private use and economic impact of cleantech remains scarce.

Title: Evolution, roots and influence of the literature on National Systems of Innovation: a bibliometric account

Abstract: The literature on the National Systems of Innovation (NSI) is a relatively new field of research that has spread remarkably in the past 20 years. This article offers a complementary, quantitative description of the state-of-the-art of the literature based on bibliometric methods, by explicitly addressing the roots, evolution and influence of NSI literature. The exercise shows that over time the rate of published articles was quite irregular and that contributions on NSI have not (yet) converged to an integrated analytical framework. Although historically detailed descriptions on NSI showed a noticeable increase in the more recent period (20062010) analyses using more formal and diversified quantitative methodologies for assessing the performance of NSI remained lacking, reflecting its persisting methodological weaknesses. The roots of the NSI literature can be found at the core of innovation studies by certain well-known scholars in the area of economics of innovation and science policy research. Even though publications on NSI are falling in relative importance and are highly concentrated on a small set of countries (United Kingdom, Denmark, and the United States), their influence is global. They are cited by authors affiliated in organisations around the world, notably in Latin America and Asia. Such an influence goes far beyond the area of innovation studies and has resonated in fields such as economic geography, environmental studies, international business and managerial sciences. This demonstrates that the NSI literature is not self-referential.

Abstract: The number of citations that papers receive has become significant in measuring researchers' scientific productivity, and such measurements are important when one seeks career opportunities and research funding. Skewed citation practices can thus have profound effects on academic careers. We investigated (i) how frequently authors misinterpret original information and (ii) how frequently authors inappropriately cite reviews instead of the articles upon which the reviews are based. To reach this aim, we carried a survey of ecology journals indexed in the Web of Science and assessed the appropriateness of citations of review papers. Reviews were significantly more often cited than regular articles. In addition, 22% of citations were inaccurate, and another 15% unfairly gave credit to the review authors for other scientists' ideas. These practices should be stopped, mainly through more open discussion among mentors, researchers and students.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Neural regeneration following nerve injury is an emerging field that attracts extending interests all over the world. OBJECTIVE: To use bibliometric indexes to track studies focusing on neural regeneration, and to investigate the relationships among geographic origin, countries and institutes, keywords in the published articles, and especially focus on the region distribution, institution distribution, as well as collaborations in Chinese papers indexed in the Web of Science. METHODS: A list of neural regeneration studies was generated by searching the database of the Web of Science-Expanded using the term "Neural Regenera(star)". Inclusive criteria: (1) articles in the field of neural regeneration; (2) fundamental research on animals, clinical trials and case reports; (3) article types: article, review, proceedings paper, note, letter, editorial material, discussion, book chapter; (4) year of publication: 2003-2012; and (5) citation database: Science Citation Index-Expanded. Exclusive criteria: (1) articles requiring manual searching or with access only by telephone; (2) unpublished articles; and (3) corrections. RESULTS: A total of 4 893 papers were retrieved from the Web of Science published between 2003 and 2012. The papers covered 65 countries or regions, of which the United States ranked first with 1 691 papers. The most relevant papers were in the neurosciences and cell biology, and the keyword "stem cell" was the most frequent. In recent years, China showed a great increase in the number of papers. Over the entire 10 years, there were 922 Chinese papers, with Jilin University ranking first with 58 articles. Chinese papers were published in connection with many countries, including the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Among the connections, the papers published by the Chinese and the American are 107, with the highest rate. With regard to funding, 689 articles were funded from various projects, occupying 74.72% of the total amount. In these projects, National Foundation and Science and Technology programs were the majority. CONCLUSION: Our bibliometric analysis provides a historical perspective on the progress of neural regeneration research. At present, the number of articles addressing neural regeneration is increasing rapidly; however, through analysis of citations it is clear that there is a long way to go to improve the academic quality.

Abstract: Introduction. Disciplinarity and other forms of differentiation in science have long been studied in the fields of science and technology studies, information science and scientometrics. However, it is not obvious whether these fields are building on each other's findings. Methods. An analysis is made of 609 articles on disciplinarity selected through a combination of automatic and manual methods published from 2000 to 2013. Analysis. Scientometric methods are used to determine how the different fields approach the study of disciplinarity. It seeks to establish how cognitively similar the approaches are, by exploring their use of knowledge base (derived from reference lists) and of the cognitive concepts used in the titles of works. Results. The three fields have very distinct communities of practitioners, but are similar cognitively. The three fields are using as their knowledge base similar authors, although not necessarily the same work by those authors. Both scientometrics and information science draw from the science and technology studies literature, which is not reciprocating. The similarity of terminology indicates that the three fields are studying the same objects, but other indicators suggest that they are actually interested in quite different aspects of those objects.

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to make a bibliometric analysis of research articles and technical notes published in the journal 'Materiales de Construccion' between 2003 and 2012. Authors' productivity and collaboration, affiliation and nationality of authors, collaboration amongst institutions using techniques of social networks analysis, and the impact factor of the journal were analyzed. The results show high levels in authors' diversification and collaboration; high number of institutions but a low level of collaboration among them; and a big increase of impact factor during all the period. The main conclusion of this work is that 'Materiales de Construccion' has evolved positively since 2003 to 2012, becoming a quality journal in its area.
