Abstract:
Background: In times of globalization there is an increasing use of
English in the medical literature. The aim of this study was to analyze
the influence of English-language articles in multi-language medical
journals on their international recognition - as measured by a lower
rate of self-citations and higher impact factor (IF).
Methods and Findings: We analyzed publications in multi-language
journals in 2008 and 2009 using the Web of Science (WoS) of Thomson
Reuters (former Institute of Scientific Information) and PubMed as
sources of information. The proportion of English-language articles
during the period was compared with both the share of self-citations in
the year 2010 and the IF with and without self-citations. Multivariable
linear regression analysis was performed to analyze these factors as
well as the influence of the journals' countries of origin and of the
other language(s) used in publications besides English.
We identified 168 multi-language journals that were listed in WoS as
well as in PubMed and met our criteria. We found a significant positive
correlation of the share of English articles in 2008 and 2009 with the
IF calculated without self-citations (Pearson r=0.56, p = <0.0001), a
correlation with the overall IF (Pearson r = 0.47, p = <0.0001) and with
the cites to years of IF calculation (Pearson r = 0.34, p = <0.0001),
and a weak negative correlation with the share of self-citations
(Pearson r = -0.2, p = 0.009). The IF without self-citations also
correlated with the journal's country of origin - North American
journals had a higher IF compared to Middle and South American or
European journals.
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a larger share of English articles
in multi-language medical journals is associated with greater
international recognition. Fewer self-citations were found in
multi-language journals with a greater share of original articles in
English.

Abstract:
Background: Systematic reviews of the literature occupy the highest
position in currently proposed hierarchies of evidence. The aims of this
study were to assess whether citation classics exist in published
systematic review and meta-analysis (SRM), examine the characteristics
of the most frequently cited SRM articles, and evaluate the contribution
of different world regions.
Methods: The 100 most cited SRM were identified in October 2012 using
the Science Citation Index database of the Institute for Scientific
Information. Data were extracted by one author. Spearman's correlation
was used to assess the association between years since publication,
numbers of authors, article length, journal impact factor, and average
citations per year.
Results: Among the 100 citation classics, published between 1977 and
2008, the most cited article received 7308 citations and the least-cited
675 citations. The average citations per year ranged from 27.8 to 401.6.
First authors from the USA produced the highest number of citation
classics (n=46), followed by the UK (n=28) and Canada (n=15). The 100
articles were published in 42 journals led by the Journal of the
American Medical Association (n=18), followed by the British Medical
Journal (n=14) and The Lancet (n=13). There was a statistically
significant positive correlation between number of authors (Spearman's
rho=0.320, p=0.001), journal impact factor (rho=0.240, p=0.016) and
average citations per year. There was a statistically significant
negative correlation between average citations per year and year since
publication (rho = -0.636, p=0.0001). The most cited papers identified
seminal contributions and originators of landmark methodological aspects
of SRM and reflect major advances in the management of and predisposing
factors for chronic diseases.
Conclusions: Since the late 1970s, the USA, UK, and Canada have taken
leadership in the production of citation classic papers. No first author
from low or middle-income countries (LMIC) led one of the most cited 100
SRM.

Abstract:
Assessing the relative stature of journals devoted to the information
systems (IS) discipline is an important issue for IS scholars and those
who evaluate them. Even though journal assessment results are often
dubiously applied by those making hiring, promotion, and merit
decisions, the fact that they are so often a major ingredient in these
decisions demands that we understand underlying journal assessment
processes. Beyond processes involving the opinions of various experts,
we here examine how IS journals can be evaluated based on overt
behaviors of crowds of IS scholars. These behaviors are revealed
preferences, in contrast to stated preferences found in opinions. Two
classes of objective journal assessments are studied: impact measures
and power measures. Among the former, we find that so-called journal
impact factors are problematic, rendering their meaningfulness in
evaluating journal stature highly suspect. Another kind of impact
measure, the H-index, is found to be a more straightforward way to gauge
journal impact. Two power measures for assessing IS journal stature are
examined: publishing intensity and publishing breadth. The stature of IS
journals according to each of the impact measures and power measures is
determined. A comparison of the results shows that a small group of four
or five IS journals are repeatedly found at the top across multiple
objective assessment approaches. To account for both the consumption and
production of IS research, it is suggested that a combined use of impact
and power measures be employed in exercises aimed at evaluating relative
statures of journals devoted to IS research.

Impact Factor, Web of Science/Social Science Citation Index, Eugene Garfield, journals, European sociology, Measurement, Scientometrics

Abstract:
One of the most popular indicators is the Impact Factor. This paper
examines the coming into being of this highly influential figure. It is
the offspring of Eugene Garfield's experimentation with the huge amounts
of data available at his Institute for Scientific Information and the
result of a number of attempts to find appropriate measurements for the
success ("impact") of articles and journals. The completely inductive
procedure was initially adjusted by examining the data thoughtfully and
by consulting with experts from different scientific disciplines. Later,
its calculation modes were imposed on other disciplines without further
consideration. The paper demonstrates in detail the inopportune
consequences of this, in particular for sociology. Neither the
definition of disciplines, nor the selection of journals for the Web of
Science/Social Science Citation Index follows any comprehensible
rationale. The procedures for calculating the impact factor are
inappropriate. Despite its obvious unsuitability, the impact factor is
used by editors of sociological journals for marketing and impression
management purposes. Fetishism!

sources of information.
Fewer self-citations were found in
multi-language journals with a greater share of original articles in
English.

Fewer self-citations were found in
multi-language journals with a greater share of original articles in
English.
