Abstract:
This study aims to reveal the intellectual structure of Library and
Information Science (LIS) in China during the period 2008-2012 utilizing
co-word analysis. The status and trends of LIS in China are achieved by
measuring the correlation coefficient of selected keywords extracted
from relevant journals in the Chinese Journal Full-Text Database. In
co-word analysis, multivariate statistical analysis and social network
analysis are applied to obtain 13 clusters of keywords, a
two-dimensional map, centrality and density of clusters, a strategic
diagram and a relation network. Based on these results, the following
conclusions can be drawn: (i) LIS in China has some established and
well-developed research topics; (ii) a few emerging topics have a great
potential for development; and (iii), the research topics in this LIS
field are largely decentralized as a whole, where there are many
marginal and immature topics.

Abstract:
Quantifying the scientific performance of investigators has become an
integral part of decision-making in research policy. The aim of the
present study was to evaluate if there is a correlation between journal
impact factor (IF) and researchers' influence among a selected group of
Brazilian investigators in the fields of clinical nephrology and
neurosciences. This study was based on 94 senior investigators (36 in
clinical nephrology and 58 in clinical neurosciences) receiving
productivity scholarships from the Brazilian Council for Scientific and
Technological Development (CNPq) according to a list provided by the
agency in February 2009. Scientific performance indicators included in
the analysis were: number of papers indexed by the Web of Science and
Scopus databases, number of citations, h- and m-index. IFs were analyzed
as (1) cumulative IF (Sigma IF), (2) IF adjusted by time (IF/t), and (3)
average IF. There was a moderate positive correlation only between aIF
and two indicators: total number of citations (P < 0.001) and h-index (P
< 0.001). There was also a positive correlation between IF/t and m-index
(P < 0.001). There was an agreement in these correlations between both
groups (clinical nephrology and neurosciences). No significant
correlation between the average IF and any of the scientific indicators
was detected. A cut-off of 10.53 for IF/t showed the best performance in
predicting researchers with m-index equal to or greater than 1.
According to our findings, other qualitative and quantitative
instruments rather than IF are clearly needed for identifying
researchers with outstanding scientific output.

Abstract:
Novelty is an essential feature of creative ideas, yet the building
blocks of new ideas are often embodied in existing knowledge. From this
perspective, balancing atypical knowledge with conventional knowledge
may be critical to the link between innovativeness and impact. Our
analysis of 17.9 million papers spanning all scientific fields suggests
that science follows a nearly universal pattern: The highest-impact
science is primarily grounded in exceptionally conventional combinations
of prior work yet simultaneously features an intrusion of unusual
combinations. Papers of this type were twice as likely to be highly
cited works. Novel combinations of prior work are rare, yet teams are
37.7% more likely than solo authors to insert novel combinations into
familiar knowledge domains.

Title:
An agent-based model for the bibliometric h-index

Abstract:
We model a virtual scientific community in which authors publish and
cite articles. Citations are attributed according to a preferential
attachment mechanism. From the numerical simulations, the h-index can be
computed. This bottom-up approach reproduces well real bibliometric
data. We consider two versions of our model. (1) The single-scientist is
controlled by two parameters which can be tuned to reproduce the value
of the h-index of many real scientists. Moreover, this model shows how
the h-index grows with the number of citations, for a fixed number of
articles. We also define an average h-index that can be used to compare
the scientific productivity of institutions of different sizes. (2) The
multi-scientist model considers a population of scientists and allows us
to study the impact of removing citations from the low h-index
researchers on the community. Simulations on real bibilometric data, as
well as the predictions of the model, show that the h-index eco-system
can be strongly affected by such a filtering.

Abstract:
The lack of predictability of citation-based measures frequently used to
gauge impact, from impact factors to short-term citations, raises a
fundamental question: Is there long-term predictability in citation
patterns? Here, we derive a mechanistic model for the citation dynamics
of individual papers, allowing us to collapse the citation histories of
papers from different journals and disciplines into a single curve,
indicating that all papers tend to follow the same universal temporal
pattern. The observed patterns not only help us uncover basic mechanisms
that govern scientific impact but also offer reliable measures of
influence that may have potential policy implications.

The Dynamic Capability View in Strategic Management: A Bibliometric Review

Abstract:
The dynamic capability view (DCV) is one of the most vibrant approaches
to strategic management. In this study, the extant literature published
between 1994 and 2011 is analysed, using bibliometric methods in order
to explore the scope of this approach and detect current research
priorities. For this purpose, the method of bibliographic coupling is
introduced in management research, which shifts the focus of analysis
from past traditions to current trends. Several clusters of thematically
related research are extracted from bibliographic networks, which
represent interconnected yet distinct subfields of inquiry within the
DCV. The core cluster of the current DCV, which visualizes this research
field's nascent but fragile identity, focuses on learning and change
capabilities and relates them to firm performance, thus merging aspects
of organization theory and strategic management. In addition, several
peripheral clusters of research are identified, which reflect a parallel
process of differentiation in the overall field. Both trends, i.e. of
integration and differentiation, attest to the emancipation of the DCV
as a distinct approach to strategic management. However, the DCV still
lacks consensual concepts that allow comparisons of empirical studies
and advance the theoretical understanding of dynamic capabilities. In
the light of the above, some implications of this analysis for further
research are discussed.

Abstract:
An experiment with 243 young communication scholars tested hypotheses
derived from role congruity theory regarding impacts of author gender
and gender typing of research topics on perceived quality of scientific
publications and collaboration interest. Participants rated conference
abstracts ostensibly authored by females or males, with author
associations rotated. The abstracts fell into research areas perceived
as gender-typed or gender-neutral to ascertain impacts from gender
typing of topics. Publications from male authors were associated with
greater scientific quality, in particular if the topic was male-typed.
Collaboration interest was highest for male authors working on
male-typed topics. Respondent sex did not influence these patterns.

Abstract:
Can one foresee whether young scientists will publish successfully
during their careers? For academic biologists on four continents, we
evaluated the effects of gender, native language, prestige of the
institution at which they received their PhD, the date of their first
publication (relative to the year of PhD completion), and their pre-PhD
publication record as potential indicators of long-term publication
success (10 years post-PhD). Pre-PhD publication success was the
strongest correlate of long-term success. Gender, language, and the date
of first publication had ancillary roles, with native English speakers,
males, and those who published earlier in their career having minor
advantages. Once these aspects were accounted for, university prestige
had almost no discernable effect. We suggest that early publication
success is vital for aspiring young scientists and that one of the
easiest ways to identify rising stars is simply to find those who have

Abstract:
BackgroundThe BEEM (best evidence in emergency medicine) rater scale was
created for emergency physicians (EPs) to evaluate the physician-derived
clinical relevance score of recently published, emergency medicine
(EM)-related studies. BEEM therefore is designed to help make EPs aware
of studies most likely to confirm or change current clinical practice.
ObjectivesThe objective was to validate the BEEM rater score as a
predictor of literature citation, using a bibliometric construct of
clinical relevance to EM based on author-, document-, and journal-level
measures (first and last author h-indices, number of authors including
corporate and group authors, citations from date of publication to 2011,
and journal impact factor scores) and study characteristics (design,
category, and sample size).
MethodsEach month from 2007 through 2012, approximately 200 EPs from
around the world voluntarily reviewed the titles and conclusions of
recently published EM-related studies identified by BEEM faculty via the
McMaster Health Information Research Unit. Using the BEEM rater scale, a
reliable seven-item instrument that evaluates the clinical relevance of
studies, raters independently assigned BEEM scores to approximately 10
to 20 articles each month. Two investigators independently abstracted
the bibliometric indices for these articles. A citation rate for each
article was calculated by dividing the Thomson Reuters Web of Science
(WoS) total citation count by the number ofyears in publication. BEEM
rater scores were correlated with the citation rate using Spearman's
rho. The performance of the BEEM rater score was assessed for each
article using negative binomial regression with composite citation count
as the criterion standard, while controlling for other independent
bibliometric variables in three models.
ResultsThe BEEM raters evaluated 605 articles with a mean (SD) BEEM
score of 3.84 (0.7) and a median BEEM score of 3.85 (interquartile
range= 3.38 to 4.30). Articles were primarily therapeutic (59%) and
diagnostic (27%), with various designs, including 37% systematic
reviews, 32% randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 30% observational
designs. The citation rate and BEEM rater score correlated positively
(0.144), while the BEEM rater score and the Journal Citation Report
(JCR) impact factor score were minimally correlated (0.053). In the
first model, the BEEM rater score significantly predicted WoS citation
rate (p<0.0001) with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.24 (95% confidence interval
[CI]=1.106 to 1.402). In subsequent models adjusting for the JCR impact
factor score, the h-indices of the first and last authors, number of
authors, and study design, the BEEM rater score was not significant
(p=0.08).
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, the BEEM rater score is the
only known measure of clinical relevance. It has a high interrater
reliability and face validity and correlates with future citations.
Future research should assess this instrument against alternative
constructs of clinical relevance.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to map an academic hospital's
nursing contributions to the literature using bibliometric methods.
BACKGROUND: Nurse executives continue to search for ways to share
knowledge gained in the clinical setting. Manuscripts from clinical
nurses must increase to advance the science of nursing practice and
nursing administration.
METHODS: A search of electronic databases and curriculum vitae provided
bibliographic data for University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) nurses from
1990 to 2012. Bibliometric techniques were used for publication counts
and citation analysis. A review of the infrastructure supporting
scholarly work was undertaken.
RESULTS: A total of 191 journal articles, 9 books, 103 book chapters, 5
manuals, and 46 manual chapters were published by UCH nurses. Author
productivity steadily increased. Citation analysis indicated that the
works published were used by others. The h-index for UCH authors was 25.
The hospital culture, interdisciplinary practice, and the role of the
research nurse scientists had an impact on study results.

Abstract:
Objective: Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is an acute inflammatory
polyradiculoneuropathy causing limb weaknesses. The mortality is around
8%, with about 20% of patients remaining disabled. The purpose of this
study is to examine the performance of Indian Medical Scientists in the
area of GBS over a period of 40 years. India's contribution to GBS has
been examined based on the global publication output and share, growth
rate, citation impact, publication share in various field, highly cited
papers and their impact, most productive authors and their citation
impact and collaboration of research on GBS with the international
community. Materials and Methods: The data for this study has been taken
from Scopus, a multidisciplinary database using keywords GBS and Miller
Fisher Syndrome. The contribution of India on GBS has been compared with
different countries for its publication and citation count during a
period of 40 years (1973-2012). Results: It is found that there were
10,633 publications available from global medical research covering the
various aspects of GBS. India's share is 2.92% of global output and
holds 10th rank in overall publication output on GBS, whereas United
States topped the rank with the highest number of publications. Sanjay
Gandhi Post-graduate Institute of Medical Research, Lucknow is the most
productive institutions while Tally AB from the National Institute of
Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore is the most productive author
who has contributed the highest number of papers on GBS. Conclusion:
India is far behind in GBS research as compared to other countries like
USA, as there might be a low case report of GBS in Indian population.
Still the research focusing this disease is quite prominent and needs a
careful medical attention through research capacity building in order to
look for better treatment of the disease in Indian cases. This study
shall be helpful in enhancing the awareness of the GBS by Indian

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: Analyze the use of the h-index as a measure of the
bibliometric impact of Brazilian researchers' scientific publications.
METHODS: The scientific production of Brazilian CNPq 1-A researchers in
the areas of public health, immunology and medicine were compared. The
mean h-index of the groups of researchers in each area were estimated
and nonparametric Kruskal Wallis test and multiple comparisons
Behrens-Fisher test were used to compare the differences.
RESULTS: The h-index means were higher in the area of Immunology than in
Public Health and Medicine when the Web of Science base was used.
However, this difference disappears when the comparison is made using
Scopus or Google Scholar.
CONCLUSIONS: The emergence of Google Scholar brings a new level to
discussions on the measure of the bibliometric impact of scientific
publications. Areas with strong professional components, in which
knowledge is produced and must also be published in the native language,
vis-a-vis its dissemination to the international community, necessarily
have a standard of scientific publications and citations different from
areas exclusively or predominantly academic and they are best captured
by Google Scholar.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper, using an evidence-based management
theoretical lens, is to examine research impact to provide guidance to
supply chain management academics in evidencing and exploiting the
outputs, outcomes and impact of their research.
Design/methodology/approach-Evidence-based management theory is examined
and applied to types of academic research impact. The distinction
between academic and non-academic impact is developed into a supply
chain framework of research outputs; transfer, outcomes, impact' and
national/international benefits. Impact of supply chain management
research is explored through a case study in the English National Health
Service. Future opportunities and challenges for supply chain management
researchers arising from increasing demand for and supply of evidence
are discussed.
Findings-Author academic impact and citations are found to be
increasingly important building blocks of evidence-based evaluations of
individual academics, journals, research quality assessments of groups
and universities, and global rankings of universities. Supply chain
management researchers can compare their impact with other areas of
academia. Non-academic impact of research has been assessed by funders
of research projects and has spread to research quality assessments of
universities.
Social implications-Bibliometrics provide evidence of author and journal
impact that can be used in human resource decisions, research quality
assessments and global rankings of universities; this availability
enables a debate on appropriate use of academic impact evidence. Supply
chain management academics evidencing non-academic research impact on
business, society and economy will enable governments and funders of
research to evaluate value for money return on their investment.
Originality/value-This perspective of evidence-based evaluation of
research impact and its implications might encourage debate on academic
and non-academic impact and encourage supply chain researchers to
consider evidencing impact in their research design and methodology.

Abstract:
Knowledge diffusion has played a more and more important role on
knowledge innovation process. Nowadays, with the continuous development
of globalization, knowledge diffusion has been beyond the limitation of
institutions, areas, and countries toward a global process. For
institutions such as universities and research department, knowledge
diffusion between them can show their cooperation relationship and
closeness of knowledge flow. Scientific papers, are main carriers of
scientific knowledge, and the mutual citations between scientific
institutions depict the paths and directions of knowledge diffusion.
This paper establishes a visualization perspective of knowledge
diffusion by combing scientometrics and complex network theory. We
selects a Chinese university, Harbin Institute of Technology ( HIT) as a
sample, construct its mutual, citation networks with Web of Science
database, and compares network topology parameters and evolution process
of these citation networks. Finally, this paper proposes a suggestion on
how to find the closer relationship with a institution and how to make
the knowledge diffusion between them more fluent and efficient.

Abstract:
Object. The volume of scientific literature doubles approximately every
7 years. The coverage of this literature provided by online compendia is
variable and incomplete. It would hence be useful to identify "core"
journals in any field and validate whether the h index and impact factor
truly identify the core journals in every subject. The core journals in
every medical specialty would be those that provide a current and
comprehensive coverage of the science in that specialty. Identifying
these journals would make it possible for individual physicians to keep
abreast of research and clinical progress.
Methods. The top 10 neurosurgical journals (on the basis of impact
factor and h index) were selected. A database of all articles cited in
the reference lists of papers published in issues of these journals
published in the first quarter of 2012 was generated. The journals were
ranked based on the number of papers cited from each. This citation rank
list was compared with the h index and impact factor rank lists. The
rank list was also examined to see if the concept of core journals could
be validated for neurosurgical literature using Bradford's law.
Results. A total of 22,850 papers spread across 2522 journals were cited
in neurosurgical literature over 3 months. Although the top 10 journals
were the same, irrespective of ranking criterion (h index, impact
factor, citation ranking), the 3 rank lists were not congruent. The top
25% of *cited articles* obeyed the Bradford distribution; beyond this,
there was a zone of increased scatter. Six core journals were identified
for neurosurgery.
Conclusions. The core journals for neurosurgery were identified to be
Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Spine, Acta Neurochirurgica,
Stroke, and Journal of Neurotrauma. A list of core journals could
similarly be generated for every subject. This would facilitate a
focused reading to keep abreast of current knowledge. Collated across
specialties, these journals could depict the current status of medical

Abstract:
Modern bioenergy systems have received growing attention for their
potential as a substitute for fossil fuels and are strongly promoted in
many regions. At the same time large scale industrialized farming in
general and intensive energy cropping in particular are increasingly
drawing criticism from various stakeholders. Organic farming systems
seem to successfully tackle agricultural sustainability questions at
least in regard to ecological dimensions. Still, apart from chemical
inputs organic systems are as much dependent on non-renewable energy
sources as conventional systems. This article deals with the question
whether the topics of organic farming (OF) and bioenergy (BE) are at all
combined or addressed in alliance within scientific literature. By means
of descriptive *scientometric* measures the present study analyzes OF-
and BE-literature retrieved from Thompson Reuters' Web of Science
database in order to generate insights on development, dynamics,
structure and distribution of OF/BE-research literature. Despite
possible barriers for research in this interdisciplinary sub-field and
its current niche character we conclude that research efforts in OF/BE
might be expedient and scientifically rewarding. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:
Background Inaccurate references and citations cause confusion, distrust
in the accuracy of a report, waste of time and unnecessary financial
charges for libraries, information centres and researchers. Objectives
The aim of the study was to establish the accuracy of article references
in PhD theses from the Tehran and Tabriz Universities of Medical
Sciences and their compliance with the Vancouver style. Methods We
analysed 357 article references in the Tehran and 347 in the Tabriz. Six
*bibliographic* elements were assessed: authors' names, article title,
journal title, publication year, volume and page range. Referencing
errors were divided into major and minor. Results Sixty two percent of
references in the Tehran and 53% of those in the Tabriz were erroneous.
In total, 164 references in the Tehran and 136 in the Tabriz were
complete without error. Of 357 reference articles in the Tehran, 34
(9.8%) were in complete accordance with the Vancouver style, compared
with none in the Tabriz. Accuracy of referencing did not differ
significantly between the two groups, but compliance with the Vancouver
style was significantly better in the Tehran. Conclusions The accuracy
of referencing was not satisfactory in both groups, and students need to
gain adequate instruction in appropriate referencing methods.

Abstract:
The assessment of research activity according to international standards
has contributed to the internationalization of Spanish research. As a
result of this evaluation policy, the number of Spanish social science
journals present in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) has increased. In
this study we have prepared a descriptive analysis of the presence of
Spanish journals in the JCR between 2006 and 2010, comparing the data
obtained with those achieved by other Hispanic American countries in the
same period. We studied the historical evolution, distribution by
country, quartiles and thematic areas, and analyzed the evolution of the
impact of major journals. Altogether, 52 Spanish journals were
identified in the JCR Social Sciences Edition in the year 2010. As for
the subject area, 40% correspond to economics and psychology. In the
period of study, the number of journals indexed in the JCR has increased
by 2500%. Finally, we discuss the assessment of these journals as a sign
of quality by national evaluation agencies, and conclude by recalling
that the publication in journals indexed in the JCR is an indication
mentioned expressly for the Social Sciences.
