Abstract:
Object. The volume of scientific literature doubles approximately every
7 years. The coverage of this literature provided by online compendia is
variable and incomplete. It would hence be useful to identify "core"
journals in any field and validate whether the h index and impact factor
truly identify the core journals in every subject. The core journals in
every medical specialty would be those that provide a current and
comprehensive coverage of the science in that specialty. Identifying
these journals would make it possible for individual physicians to keep
abreast of research and clinical progress.
Methods. The top 10 neurosurgical journals (on the basis of impact
factor and h index) were selected. A database of all articles cited in
the reference lists of papers published in issues of these journals
published in the first quarter of 2012 was generated. The journals were
ranked based on the number of papers cited from each. This citation rank
list was compared with the h index and impact factor rank lists. The
rank list was also examined to see if the concept of core journals could
be validated for neurosurgical literature using Bradford's law.
Results. A total of 22,850 papers spread across 2522 journals were cited
in neurosurgical literature over 3 months. Although the top 10 journals
were the same, irrespective of ranking criterion (h index, impact
factor, citation ranking), the 3 rank lists were not congruent. The top
25% of cited articles obeyed the Bradford distribution; beyond this,
there was a zone of increased scatter. Six core journals were identified
for neurosurgery.
Conclusions. The core journals for neurosurgery were identified to be
Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Spine, Acta Neurochirurgica,
Stroke, and Journal of Neurotrauma. A list of core journals could
similarly be generated for every subject. This would facilitate a
focused reading to keep abreast of current knowledge. Collated across
specialties, these journals could depict the current status of medical
science.

Abstract:
BackgroundThe BEEM (best evidence in emergency medicine) rater scale was
created for emergency physicians (EPs) to evaluate the physician-derived
clinical relevance score of recently published, emergency medicine
(EM)-related studies. BEEM therefore is designed to help make EPs aware
of studies most likely to confirm or change current clinical practice.
ObjectivesThe objective was to validate the BEEM rater score as a
predictor of literature citation, using a bibliometric construct of
clinical relevance to EM based on author-, document-, and journal-level
measures (first and last author h-indices, number of authors including
corporate and group authors, citations from date of publication to 2011,
and journal impact factor scores) and study characteristics (design,
category, and sample size).
MethodsEach month from 2007 through 2012, approximately 200 EPs from
around the world voluntarily reviewed the titles and conclusions of
recently published EM-related studies identified by BEEM faculty via the
McMaster Health Information Research Unit. Using the BEEM rater scale, a
reliable seven-item instrument that evaluates the clinical relevance of
studies, raters independently assigned BEEM scores to approximately 10
to 20 articles each month. Two investigators independently abstracted
the bibliometric indices for these articles. A citation rate for each
article was calculated by dividing the Thomson Reuters Web of Science
(WoS) total citation count by the number ofyears in publication. BEEM
rater scores were correlated with the citation rate using Spearman's
rho. The performance of the BEEM rater score was assessed for each
article using negative binomial regression with composite citation count
as the criterion standard, while controlling for other independent
bibliometric variables in three models.
ResultsThe BEEM raters evaluated 605 articles with a mean (SD) BEEM
score of 3.84 (0.7) and a median BEEM score of 3.85 (interquartile
range= 3.38 to 4.30). Articles were primarily therapeutic (59%) and
diagnostic (27%), with various designs, including 37% systematic
reviews, 32% randomized controlled trials (RCTs), and 30% observational
designs. The citation rate and BEEM rater score correlated positively
(0.144), while the BEEM rater score and the Journal Citation Report
(JCR) impact factor score were minimally correlated (0.053). In the
first model, the BEEM rater score significantly predicted WoS citation
rate (p<0.0001) with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.24 (95% confidence interval
[CI]=1.106 to 1.402). In subsequent models adjusting for the JCR impact
factor score, the h-indices of the first and last authors, number of
authors, and study design, the BEEM rater score was not significant
(p=0.08).
ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, the BEEM rater score is the
only known measure of clinical relevance. It has a high interrater
reliability and face validity and correlates with future citations.
Future research should assess this instrument against alternative
constructs of clinical relevance.

Abstract:
Modern bioenergy systems have received growing attention for their
potential as a substitute for fossil fuels and are strongly promoted in
many regions. At the same time large scale industrialized farming in
general and intensive energy cropping in particular are increasingly
drawing criticism from various stakeholders. Organic farming systems
seem to successfully tackle agricultural sustainability questions at
least in regard to ecological dimensions. Still, apart from chemical
inputs organic systems are as much dependent on non-renewable energy
sources as conventional systems. This article deals with the question
whether the topics of organic farming (OF) and bioenergy (BE) are at all
combined or addressed in alliance within scientific literature. By means
of descriptive scientometric measures the present study analyzes OF- and
BE-literature retrieved from Thompson Reuters' Web of Science database
in order to generate insights on development, dynamics, structure and
distribution of OF/BE-research literature. Despite possible barriers for
research in this interdisciplinary sub-field and its current niche
character we conclude that research efforts in OF/BE might be expedient
and scientifically rewarding. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

The Gender Citation Gap in International Relations

Abstract:
This article investigates the extent to which citation and publication
patterns differ between men and women in the international relations
(IR) literature. Using data from the Teaching, Research, and
International Policy project on peer-reviewed publications between 1980
and 2006, we show that women are systematically cited less than men
after controlling for a large number of variables including year of
publication, venue of publication, substantive focus, theoretical
perspective, methodology, tenure status, and institutional affiliation.
These results are robust to a variety of modeling choices. We then turn
to network analysis to investigate the extent to which the gender of an
article's author affects that article's relative centrality in the
network of citations between papers in our sample. Articles authored by
women are systematically less central than articles authored by men, all
else equal. This is likely because (1) women tend to cite themselves
less than men, and (2) men (who make up a disproportionate share of IR
scholars) tend to cite men more than women. This is the first study in
political science to reveal significant gender differences in citation
patterns and is especially meaningful because citation counts are
increasingly used as a key measure of research's quality and impact.

THE NEED FOR END-USER CUSTOMIZATION OF THE JOURNAL-SETS OF THE SUBJECT CATEGORIES IN THE SCIMAGO JOURNAL RANKING DATABASE FOR MORE APPROPRIATE LEAGUE LISTS. A CASE STUDY FOR THE LIBRARY & INFORMATION SCIENCE FIELD

Abstract:
The open access SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) service -built from
data in the subscription-based Elsevier's Scopus database- offers
bibliographic information and bibliometric indicators for nearly 20,000
journals and other serial publications for 1996-2011. Journals are
assigned to 300+ pre-defined subject categories and 26 broad subject
areas to produce league lists. The set of 134 journals assigned to the
Library and Information Sciences (LIS) subject category and a sample set
of 50 other LIS journals, scattered across several other categories,
were analyzed in the latest edition (SJR-2011). Recommendations are made
on how SJR could be enhanced by its developers to include simple
customization options in the interface to facilitate a more efficient
look-up and more valid comparison of the standing of journals and other
serials and to reflect the prevailing preferences at the institutions
where the rank positions in journal league lists are used to inform
career advancement and funding decisions. It is argued that extending
the current three-year citation window to five years would be more
appropriate for all disciplines, and would also make SJR comparable to
metrics-based journal league lists produced from the open access
Microsoft Academic Search (MAS), Google Scholar Metrics for Publications
(GSMP), and Eigenfactor.org (EF) data and the subscription-based Journal
Citation Reports (JCR), which pioneered the idea of a metrics-based
journal league list.

Abstract:
This study presents a scientometric analysis of 253 articles published
in Sadhana during the year 2005-2009. Five volumes of the journal are
taken up to observe the distribution of contribution, authorship
pattern, institution-wise distribution, geographical distribution of
contribution, average length of paper, tables and illustrations used and
citation pattern in each volume. Results indicate that highest number of
papers have been written by two authors. The contributions received in
this journal are more from India than from the other countries. Foreign
documents show their more representation in references cited. Journals
are referred more frequently than other documents. The average number of
references per article is 23.72 and 200.602 per volume.

Abstract:
The assessment of research activity according to international standards
has contributed to the internationalization of Spanish research. As a
result of this evaluation policy, the number of Spanish social science
journals present in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) has increased. In
this study we have prepared a descriptive analysis of the presence of
Spanish journals in the JCR between 2006 and 2010, comparing the data
obtained with those achieved by other Hispanic American countries in the
same period. We studied the historical evolution, distribution by
country, quartiles and thematic areas, and analyzed the evolution of the
impact of major journals. Altogether, 52 Spanish journals were
identified in the JCR Social Sciences Edition in the year 2010. As for
the subject area, 40% correspond to economics and psychology. In the
period of study, the number of journals indexed in the JCR has increased
by 2500%. Finally, we discuss the assessment of these journals as a sign
of quality by national evaluation agencies, and conclude by recalling
that the publication in journals indexed in the JCR is an indication
mentioned expressly for the Social Sciences.

Title:
A surname-based patent-related indicator: the contribution of Jewish inventors to US patents

Abstract:
It was found that the surname-based representation of Jewish authors in
the top US biomedical journals corresponds to the representation of
Jewish Nobel Laureates in Medicine among US laureates: Both of them are
almost equally disproportionately high, with the ratio of actual to
expected number close to 20 (Kissin, Scientometrics 89:273-280, 2011).
The main aim of this study was to determine whether the contribution of
Jewish inventors is also disproportionately high. The number of patents
(US Patent and Trademark Office database) per thousand persons with the
same surname (2000 Census) was determined (index P). Index P was
compared with index A, which represents the number of the articles in
the top US biomedical journals, and index G, which is based on the
representation of a surname in the Google's option "Discussions",
reflecting a combination of various business and leisure activities
(designed as a negative control). The collective contributions of the 96
Jewish surname groups for each of the above indices were calculated. The
ratio of actual to expected number of US patents was found to be
disproportionately high-6.1 (p < 0.0001). At the same time, this
disproportionality was four-fold lower than that related to biomedical
articles (ratio of 6.1 vs. 23.3, p < 0.0001). There was some degree of
correlation between index P and index A (r = 0.407, p < 0.0001), but no
significant correlation was found between index P and index G. The role
of various factors in the observed disproportionalities is discussed.
The greater degree of disproportionality with biomedical research
articles might be a consequence of traditional Jewish inclination
towards occupations in medicine.

Abstract:
Quantifying the scientific performance of investigators has become an
integral part of decision-making in research policy. The aim of the
present study was to evaluate if there is a correlation between journal
impact factor (IF) and researchers' influence among a selected group of
Brazilian investigators in the fields of clinical nephrology and
neurosciences. This study was based on 94 senior investigators (36 in
clinical nephrology and 58 in clinical neurosciences) receiving
productivity scholarships from the Brazilian Council for Scientific and
Technological Development (CNPq) according to a list provided by the
agency in February 2009. Scientific performance indicators included in
the analysis were: number of papers indexed by the Web of Science and
Scopus databases, number of citations, h- and m-index. IFs were analyzed
as (1) cumulative IF (Sigma IF), (2) IF adjusted by time (IF/t), and (3)
average IF. There was a moderate positive correlation only between aIF
and two indicators: total number of citations (P < 0.001) and h-index (P
< 0.001). There was also a positive correlation between IF/t and m-index
(P < 0.001). There was an agreement in these correlations between both
groups (clinical nephrology and neurosciences). No significant
correlation between the average IF and any of the scientific indicators
was detected. A cut-off of 10.53 for IF/t showed the best performance in
predicting researchers with m-index equal to or greater than 1.
According to our findings, other qualitative and quantitative
instruments rather than IF are clearly needed for identifying
researchers with outstanding scientific output.

Abstract:
Publishing a scientific article in a journal with a high impact factor
and a good reputation is considered prestigious among one's peer group
and an essential achievement for career progression. In the drive to get
their work published, researchers can forget, either intentionally or
unintentionally, the ethics that should be followed in scientific
publishing. In an environment where "publish or perish" rules the day,
some authors might be tempted to bend or break rules. This special
article is intended to raise awareness among orthodontic journal
editors, authors, and readers about the types of scientific misconduct
in the current publishing scenario and to provide insight into the ways
these misconducts are managed by the Committee of Publishing Ethics.
Case studies are presented, and various plagiarism detection software
programs used by publishing companies are briefly described.

Abstract:
Background: Assessing the impact of individual journal articles provides
information for understanding trends in science and translation of
findings on practice. Citation analysis is an important way to highlight
the contributions of individual author/investigator and journals on
nursing practice.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the most frequently
cited articles published in nursing journals from 1956 to 2011.
Methods: The Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences
Citation Index were searched for citations through 2011 to articles
published in the 89 nursing journals listed on the Journal Citation
Reports (2010 edition). The number of citations, topic, countries, and
institutions of origin based on the first author affiliation, year of
publication, study design, publishing journal, journal country, and
journal impact factor were noted. The most frequently cited articles
published in the 89 nursing journals from 1956 to 2011 were identified.
Results: The top 50 most frequently cited articles were published in 10
nursing journals between 1970 and 2005. The top cited article received
784 citations. The most common topics were methodology for qualitative
studies, validation procedures for tool development, and nursing care
and practices in cancer and mental health. The most common study designs
were reviews including meta-analysis and instrument validation. Most of
the top 50 cited articles were published from 1986 to 1995.
Discussion: The findings provide insights into priorities and trends in
nursing research and translational science.

Abstract:
This study investigates a range of metrics available when a nanoscience
and nanotechnology article is published to see which metrics correlate
more with the number of citations to the article. It also introduces the
degree of internationality of journals and references as new metrics for
this purpose. The journal impact factor; the impact of references; the
internationality of authors, journals, and references; and the number of
authors, institutions, and references were all calculated for papers
published in nanoscience and nanotechnology journals in the Web of
Science from 2007 to 2009. Using a zero-inflated negative binomial
regression model on the data set, the impact factor of the publishing
journal and the citation impact of the cited references were found to be
the most effective determinants of citation counts in all four time
periods. In the entire 2007 to 2009 period, apart from journal
internationality and author numbers and internationality, all other
predictor variables had significant effects on citation counts.

Abstract:
Knowledge diffusion has played a more and more important role on
knowledge innovation process. Nowadays, with the continuous development
of globalization, knowledge diffusion has been beyond the limitation of
institutions, areas, and countries toward a global process. For
institutions such as universities and research department, knowledge
diffusion between them can show their cooperation relationship and
closeness of knowledge flow. Scientific papers, are main carriers of
scientific knowledge, and the mutual citations between scientific
institutions depict the paths and directions of knowledge diffusion.
This paper establishes a visualization perspective of knowledge
diffusion by combing scientometrics and complex network theory. We
selects a Chinese university, Harbin Institute of Technology ( HIT) as a
sample, construct its mutual, citation networks with Web of Science
database, and compares network topology parameters and evolution process
of these citation networks. Finally, this paper proposes a suggestion on
how to find the closer relationship with a institution and how to make
the knowledge diffusion between them more fluent and efficient.

Abstract:
This paper examines the strength of association between the outcomes of
National Research Foundation (NRF) peer review based rating mechanisms,
and a range of objective measures of performance of researchers. The
analysis is conducted on 1932 scholars that have received an NRF rating
or an NRF research chair. We find that on average scholars with higher
NRF ratings record higher performance against research output and impact
metrics. However, we also record anomalies in the probabilities of
different NRF ratings when assessed against bibliometric performance
measures, and record a disproportionately large incidence of scholars
with high peer-review based ratings with low levels of recorded research
output and impact. Moreover, we find strong cross-disciplinary
differences in terms of the impact that objective levels of performance
have on the probability of achieving different NRF ratings. Finally, we
report evidence that NRF peer review is less likely to reward
multi-authored research output than single-authored output. Claims of a
lack of bias in NRF peer review are thus difficult to sustain.

Abstract:
Based on data from the Web of Science, international collaboration
between China and the UK in food and agriculture has been investigated
from various perspectives. A new method for classifying cross- or
multi-disciplinary fields has been created. The comparative study
focuses on China's collaboration with selected countries including the
USA, the UK, Germany and Japan. The newly proposed Integrated Impact
Indicator (I3) is applied to evaluate publication impact. Although
China's total publications dropped in 2010, its research productivity in
food and agriculture nevertheless kept growing and international
collaboration, reflected by the number of publications, also increased
in an exponential way. The growth rate of China's internationally
collaborated publications was lower than that of China's total
publications. The USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, the UK and Germany are
the top partners for Chinese researchers in this field. China-UK joint
publications overall increased although their share in China's total
internationally collaborated publications decreased. To China,
collaborating with the USA, the UK and Germany, instead of Japan, seems
to offer an option to raise impact. The rapidly growing number of
international publications and impact of Chinese research in food and
agriculture offers great collaboration potential for the country. The
fact that the average impact of China-UK collaborative publications is
higher than the domestic publications of either country implies that
collaboration benefits both sides as has been found in several other
studies.

Title:
An agent-based model for the *bibliometric* h-index

Abstract:
We model a virtual scientific community in which authors publish and
cite articles. Citations are attributed according to a preferential
attachment mechanism. From the numerical simulations, the h-index can be
computed. This bottom-up approach reproduces well real bibliometric
data. We consider two versions of our model. (1) The single-scientist is
controlled by two parameters which can be tuned to reproduce the value
of the h-index of many real scientists. Moreover, this model shows how
the h-index grows with the number of citations, for a fixed number of
articles. We also define an average h-index that can be used to compare
the scientific productivity of institutions of different sizes. (2) The
multi-scientist model considers a population of scientists and allows us
to study the impact of removing citations from the low h-index
researchers on the community. Simulations on real bibilometric data, as
well as the predictions of the model, show that the h-index eco-system
can be strongly affected by such a filtering.

How the approval system affects Chinese scientific *journals*

Abstract:
Chinese scientific journals are moving in the right direction but
developing first-class academic journals still requires a number of
obstacles to be overcome. Before the birth of any journal, a very
complex journal approval system (JAS) must be negotiated. The paper will
first present the history of the JAS in China and then analyze its
effect on the scientific journal system. The JAS poses potential risks
to the development of journals, and journal quantity rather than quality
is the current priority. This needs to be changed and the JAS should be
replaced by a journal registration system. Simultaneously, a system in
which entry (start up) and closure, if required, is much easier than at
present should be introduced, allowing the market to be the principal
arbiter of success or failure. (C) Songqing Lin 2013

Abstract:
Citation analysis of documents retrieved from the Medline database (at
the Web of Knowledge) has been possible only on a case-by-case basis. A
technique is presented here for citation analysis in batch mode using
both Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) at the Web of Knowledge and the
Science Citation Index at the Web of Science (WoS). This freeware
routine is applied to the case of Brugada Syndrome, a specific disease
and field of research (since 1992). The journals containing these
publications, for example, are attributed to WoS categories other than
cardiac and cardiovascular systems, perhaps because of the possibility
of genetic testing for this syndrome in the clinic. With this routine,
all the instruments available for citation analysis can now be used on
the basis of MeSH terms. Other options for crossing between Medline,
WoS, and Scopus are also reviewed.

Abstract:
This study aims to reveal the intellectual structure of Library and
Information Science (LIS) in China during the period 2008-2012 utilizing
co-word analysis. The status and trends of LIS in China are achieved by
measuring the correlation coefficient of selected keywords extracted
from relevant journals in the Chinese Journal Full-Text Database. In
co-word analysis, multivariate statistical analysis and social network
analysis are applied to obtain 13 clusters of keywords, a
two-dimensional map, centrality and density of clusters, a strategic
diagram and a relation network. Based on these results, the following
conclusions can be drawn: (i) LIS in China has some established and
well-developed research topics; (ii) a few emerging topics have a great
potential for development; and (iii), the research topics in this LIS
field are largely decentralized as a whole, where there are many
marginal and immature topics.

Abstract:
We investigate the power-law scaling behaviors of returns for a
financial price process which is developed by the voter interacting
dynamic system in comparison with the real financial market index
(Shanghai Composite Index). The voter system is a continuous time Markov
process, which originally represents a voter's attitude on a particular
topic, that is, voters reconsider their opinions at times distributed
according to independent exponential random variables. In this paper,
the detrended fluctuation analysis method is employed to explore the
long range power-law correlations of return time series for different
values of parameters in the financial model. The findings show no
indication or very weak long-range power-law correlations for the
simulated returns but strong long-range dependence for the absolute
returns. The multiplier distribution is studied to demonstrate directly
the existence of scale invariance in the actual data of the Shanghai
Stock Exchange and the simulation data of the model by comparison.
Moreover, the *Zipf* analysis is applied to investigate the statistical
behaviors of frequency functions and the distributions of the returns.
By a comparative study, the simulation data for our constructed price
model exhibits very similar behaviors to the real stock index, this
indicates somewhat rationality of our model to the market application.

This paper establishes a visualization perspective of knowledge
diffusion by combing *scientometrics* and complex network theory. We
selects a Chinese university, Harbin Institute of Technology ( HIT) as a
sample, construct its mutual, citation networks with Web of Science
database, and compares network topology parameters and evolution process
of these citation networks. Finally, this paper proposes a suggestion on
how to find the closer relationship with a institution and how to make
the knowledge diffusion between them more fluent and efficient.

Abstract:
Object. The volume of scientific literature doubles approximately every
7 years. The coverage of this literature provided by online compendia is
variable and incomplete. It would hence be useful to identify "core"
journals in any field and validate whether the h index and *impact
factor* truly identify the core journals in every subject. The core
journals in every medical specialty would be those that provide a
current and comprehensive coverage of the science in that specialty.
Identifying these journals would make it possible for individual
physicians to keep abreast of research and clinical progress.
Methods. The top 10 neurosurgical journals (on the basis of *impact
factor* and h index) were selected. A database of all articles cited in
the reference lists of papers published in issues of these journals
published in the first quarter of 2012 was generated. The journals were
ranked based on the number of papers cited from each. This citation rank
list was compared with the h index and *impact factor* rank lists. The
rank list was also examined to see if the concept of core journals could
be validated for neurosurgical literature using Bradford's law.
Results. A total of 22,850 papers spread across 2522 journals were cited
in neurosurgical literature over 3 months. Although the top 10 journals
were the same, irrespective of ranking criterion (h index, *impact
factor*, citation ranking), the 3 rank lists were not congruent. The top
25% of cited articles obeyed the Bradford distribution; beyond this,
there was a zone of increased scatter. Six core journals were identified
for neurosurgery.
Conclusions. The core journals for neurosurgery were identified to be
Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Spine, Acta Neurochirurgica,
Stroke, and Journal of Neurotrauma. A list of core journals could
similarly be generated for every subject. This would facilitate a
focused reading to keep abreast of current knowledge. Collated across
specialties, these journals could depict the current status of medical
science.
