DISTRIBUTIONS

Abstract:
The dependence on text length of the statistical properties of word
occurrences has long been considered a severe limitation on the
usefulness of quantitative linguistics. We propose a simple scaling form
for the distribution of absolute word frequencies that brings to light
the robustness of this distribution as text grows. In this way, the
shape of the distribution is always the same, and it is only a scale
parameter that increases (linearly) with text length. By analyzing very
long novels we show that this behavior holds both for raw, unlemmatized
texts and for lemmatized texts. In the latter case, the distribution of
frequencies is well approximated by a double power law, maintaining the
*Zipf*'s exponent value gamma similar or equal to 2 for large
frequencies but yielding a smaller exponent in the low-frequency regime.
The growth of the distribution with text length allows us to estimate
the size of the vocabulary at each step and to propose a generic
alternative to Heaps' law, which turns out to be intimately connected to
the distribution of frequencies, thanks to its scaling behavior.

Abstract:
Antarctica is a highly interesting region for ecologists because of its
extreme climatic conditions and the uniqueness of its species. In this
article, we describe the trends in Antarctic ecological research
participation by Latin American countries. In a survey of articles
indexed by the ISI Web of Science, we searched under the categories
"Ecology,'' "Biodiversity Conservation'' and "Evolutionary Biology'' and
found a total of 254 research articles published by Latin American
countries. We classified these articles according to the country of
affiliation, kingdom of the study species, level of biological
organization and environment. Our main finding is that there is a steady
increase in the relative contribution of Latin American countries to
Antarctic ecological research. Within each category, we found that
marine studies are more common than terrestrial studies. Between the
different kingdoms, most studies focus on animals and most studies use a
community approach. The leading countries in terms of productivity were
Argentina, Chile and Brazil, with Argentina showing the highest rate of
increase.

Abstract:
Coauthors (CA) of a "lead investigator" (LI) can receive a rank (r)
according to their "importance" in having published joint publications
with the LI. It is commonly accepted, without any proof, that
publications in peer review journals and for example conference
proceedings do not have the same "value" in a CV, and the same applies
to papers contributing to encyclopedia and book chapters. It is examined
here whether the relationship between the number (J) of publications of
some scientist with her/his coauthors, ranked according to their
decreasing importance, i.e. J alpha 1/r(alpha), as found by Ausloos
(2013) [1], still holds if the overall publication list is broken into
such specific types of publications. Several authors, with different
careers, but mainly having worked in the field of statistical mechanics,
are studied here to sort out answers to the questions. The exponent a
turns out to be weakly scientist dependent, only if the maximum value
off and r is large and is similar to +1 then. The m(A) core value, i.e.
the core number of CAs, for proceedings only is about half of the total
one, i.e. when all publications are counted. Contributions to the
numerical values from both encyclopedia and book chapters are marginal.
The role of a time span on mA is also examined in two cases in relation
to career activity considerations. It can be considered that the
findings serve as a contrasting point of view on how to quantify an
individual (publication) career as recently done by Petersen et al.
(2010, 2012, 2011) [2-4], here emphasizing the collaboration size and
evolution, rather than a citation count, moreover specifying the type of
publication. Through the various m(A)'s one can distinguish different
behavior patterns of a scientific publication with CAs. (C) 2013

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to visualize the history of evidence-based
medicine (EBM) and to examine the characteristics of EBM development in
China and the West. We searched the Web of Science and the Chinese
National Knowledge Infrastructure database for papers related to EBM. We
applied information visualization techniques, citation analysis,
cocitation analysis, cocitation cluster analysis, and network analysis
to construct historiographies, themes networks, and chronological theme
maps regarding EBM in China and the West. EBM appeared to develop in 4
stages: incubation (1972-1992 in the West vs. 1982-1999 in China),
initiation (1992-1993 vs. 1999-2000), rapid development (1993-2000 vs.
2000-2004), and stable distribution (2000 onwards vs. 2004 onwards).
Although there was a lag in EBM initiation in China compared with the
West, the pace of development appeared similar. Our study shows that
important differences exist in research themes, domain structures, and
development depth, and in the speed of adoption between China and the
West. In the West, efforts in EBM have shifted from education to
practice, and from the quality of evidence to its translation. In China,
there was a similar shift from education to practice, and from
production of evidence to its translation. In addition, this concept has
diffused to other healthcare areas, leading to the development of
evidence-based traditional Chinese medicine, evidence-based nursing, and
evidence-based policy making.

Abstract:
Purpose: Previous literature described how clinical fellowship training
impacts scholarly production among academic otolaryngologists, finding
that fellowship-trained practitioners had higher research productivity
than their non-fellowship-trained peers, and head and neck (H&N)
surgeons and otologists had the highest scholarly impact. In this
analysis we investigate whether. geographic differences in academic
promotion and scholarly impact exist, and whether such differences are
associated with emphasis on regional fellowship training patterns.
Methods: The Scopus database was used to determine scholarly impact (as
measured by the h-index) of 1109 academic otolaryngologists from 97
departments. Online faculty listings were organized by fellowship
training, academic rank, and location.
Results: Fellowship-trained practitioners had greater research
productivity than non-fellowship-trained otolaryngologists (H = 9.5 +/-
0.26 SEM vs. 6.5 +/- 0.43, p < 0.001), a finding that persisted
throughout except in the Mountain and East South Central Regions. H&N
surgeons and otologists had the highest h-indices. Practitioners in the
West had the highest h-index, with differences persisting upon
examination of junior faculty. The West (62.1%) and Midwest (60.5%) had
the highest proportions of senior faculty. Regional differences in
scholarly impact and academic promotion were further noted upon
organizing faculty by subspecialty fellowship training.
Conclusions: Geographic differences in academic promotion and scholarly
impact exist, most markedly among junior faculty. Practitioners in the
West had high impact and were more represented at senior ranks. Upon
examination by fellowship training status, fellowship-trained
otolaryngologists had higher impact in most, but not all, geographic
regions. Regional variations in promotion were noted upon organizing
faculty by subspecialty, although association with scholarly impact
differs by region. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Purpose: Scholarly productivity in the form of research contributions is
important for appointment and promotion in academic urology. Some
believe that this production may require significant funding. We
evaluated the relationship between National Institutes of Health (NIH)
funding, academic rank and research productivity, as measured by the
h-index, an objective indicator of research impact on a field.
Materials and Methods: A total of 361 faculty members from the top 20
NIH funded academic urology departments were examined for research
productivity, as measured by the h-index and calculated from the Scopus
database (http://www.info.sciverse.com/scopus). Research productivity
was compared to individual funding totals, the terminal degree and
academic rank.
Results: NIH funded faculty members had statistically higher research
productivity than nonfunded colleagues. Research productivity increased
with increasing NIH funding. Departmental NIH funding correlated poorly
with the mean department h-index. Successive academic rank was
associated with increasing research productivity. Full professors had
higher NIH funding awards than their junior NIH funded colleagues.
Conclusions: There is an association among the h-index, NIH funding and
academic rank. The h-index is a reliable method of assessing the impact
of scholarly contributions toward the discourse in academic urology. It
may be used as an adjunct for evaluating the scholarly productivity of
academic urologists.

Abstract:
This paper proposes entitymetrics to measure the impact of knowledge
units. Entitymetrics highlight the importance of entities embedded in
scientific literature for further knowledge discovery. In this paper, we
use Metformin, a drug for diabetes, as an example to form an
entity-entity citation network based on literature related to Metformin.
We then calculate the network features and compare the centrality ranks
of biological entities with results from Comparative Toxicogenomics
Database (CTD). The comparison demonstrates the usefulness of
entitymetrics to detect most of the outstanding interactions manually
curated in CTD.

Abstract:
When a group of individuals creates something, credit is usually divided
among them. Oddly, that does not apply to scientific papers. The most
commonly used performance measure for individual researchers is the
h-index, which does not correct for multiple authors. Each author claims
full credit for each paper and each ensuing citation. This mismeasure of
achievement is fuelling a flagrant increase in multi-authorship. Several
alternatives to the h-index have been devised, and one of them, the
individual h-index (h(I)), is logical, intuitive and easily calculated.
Correcting for multi-authorship would end gratuitous authorship and
allow proper attribution and unbiased comparisons.

Abstract:
Scientific collaboration commonly takes place in a global and
competitive environment. Coalitions and consortia are formed among
universities, companies and research institutes to apply for research
grants and to perform joint projects. In such a competitive environment,
individual institutes may be strategic partners or competitors. Measures
to determine partner importance have practical applications such as
comparison and rating of competitors, reputation evaluation or
performance evaluation of companies and institutes. Many network-centric
metrics exist to measure the important of individuals or companies in
social and collaborative networks. Here we present a novel context-based
metric to measure the importance of partners in scientific collaboration
networks. Well-established graph models such as the notion of hubs and
authorities provide the basis for this work and are systematically
extended to a flexible, context-aware network importance measure. (C)

Abstract:
Using the information from the two main online scientific databases,
Scopus and Web of Science (WoS), the scientific productivity of Chilean
research institutions associated with the forestry sector was analyzed
for the period 2000-2011. The following factors were analyzed: number of
publications indexed in WoS and Scopus, citation frequency, impact
indexes, h-Index, international contribution, self-citing and subject
area of publications. The articles selected indicated affiliation either
to faculties that offered undergraduate Forestry Programs in March 2012
or to public and private institutions associated with the forestry
sector. Using this information, a ranking of scientific productivity for
each institution was established according to the number of publications
registered in WoS. Results show that the universities which offered
Forestry Programs published 515 articles in WoS indexed journals and 625
in Scopus, corresponding to 88.5 and 85.0 % of the publications in the
period, respectively. Universidad de Concepcion, Universidad Austral de
Chile and Universidad de Chile concentrate more than two-thirds of WoS
and Scopus-indexed articles; the number of publications per researcher
indicates that Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and Universidad
de Concepcion are in first and second place followed by Universidad
Austral de Chile and Universidad de Chile. Most publications (more than
80 %) are concentrated between the years 2006 and 2011. The main
research subjects in Universidad de Concepcion, Universidad Austral de
Chile and Universidad de Chile are Forestry and Biodiversity, and
Conservation and Ecology. In Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile,
it is Agriculture.

Abstract:
This article presents the results of a descriptive research with
quantitative approach and strategy based on the documentary method, with
the aim of analyzing the references listed in articles appearing in
regular publications of the Journal "Gestao & Producao" by adapting the
concepts of bibliometric citation analysis. Given the objective of the
research, an analysis was made of the reference lists specifying: 1) how
subjects investigated the documents referenced in the articles, 2) as
elements of deterministic variables obtained by analyzing references
and, 3) as the type of bibliographic research resource. Based on these
parameters, documents were analyzed used in the theoretical basis of the
articles by means of identification, mapping and quantitative
determination: a) of the items listed in each study; b) the mean life of
the literature; c) the language; d) the frequency of use of references
and; e) research front. As a result, the main aspects of the sources of
researches on which studies in Production Engineering and its sub areas
are based were mapped.

Abstract:
A new method of assessment of scientific papers, scientists, and
scientific institutions was defined. The significance of a paper was
assessed by the definition of the largest (the most prestigious) set,
including that paper in its h-core. The sets of papers were defined by
affiliation (country, city, university, department) or by subject
(branches and sub-branches of science, journal). The inclusion of a
paper in the h-core of certain set(s) was used as an indicator of the
significance of that paper, and of the scientific output of its
author(s), of their scientific institution(s), etc. An analogous
procedure was used to assess the contribution of an individual to the
scientific output of his/her scientific institution, branch of science,
etc. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
To take into account the impact of the different bibliometric features
of scientific fields and different size of both the publication set
evaluated and the set used as reference standard, two new impact
indicators are introduced. The Percentage Rank Position (PRP) indicator
relates the ordinal rank position of the article assessed to the total
number of papers in the publishing journal. The publications in the
publishing journal are ranked by the decreasing citation frequency. The
Relative Elite Rate (RER) indicator relates the number of citations
obtained by the article assessed to the mean citation rate of the papers
in the elite set of the publishing journal. The indices can be
preferably calculated from the data of the publications in the elite set
of journal papers of individuals, teams, institutes or countries. The
number of papers in the elite set is calculated by the equation:
P(pi(nu))=(10 log P) - 10, where P is the total number of papers. The
mean of the PRP and RER indicators of the journal papers assessed may be
applied for comparing the eminence of publication sets across fields.

Abstract:
In citation network analysis, complex behavior is reduced to a simple
edge, namely, node A cites node B. The implicit assumption is that A is
giving credit to, or acknowledging, B. It is also the case that the
contributions of all citations are treated equally, even though some
citations appear multiply in a text and others appear only once. In this
study, we apply text-mining algorithms to a relatively large dataset
(866 information science articles containing 32,496 bibliographic
references) to demonstrate the differential contributions made by
references. We (1) look at the placement of citations across the
different sections of a journal article, and (2) identify highly cited
works using two different counting methods (CountOne and CountX). We
find that (1) the most highly cited works appear in the Introduction and
Literature Review sections of citing papers, and (2) the citation
rankings produced by CountOne and CountX differ. That is to say,
counting the number of times a bibliographic reference is cited in a
paper rather than treating all references the same no matter how many
times they are invoked in the citing article reveals the differential
contributions made by the cited works to the citing paper. Published by

Abstract:
Is more always better? We address this question in the context of
bibliometric indices that aim to assess the scientific impact of
individual researchers by counting their number of highly cited
publications. We propose a simple model in which the number of citations
of a publication depends not only on the scientific impact of the
publication but also on other 'random' factors. Our model indicates that
more need not always be better. It turns out that the most influential
researchers may have a systematically lower performance, in terms of
highly cited publications, than some of their less influential
colleagues. The model also suggests an improved way of counting highly
cited publications. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Wide differences in publication and citation practices make impossible
the direct comparison of raw citation counts across scientific
disciplines. Recent research has studied new and traditional
normalization procedures aimed at suppressing as much as possible these
disproportions in citation numbers among scientific domains. Using the
recently introduced IDCP (Inequality due to Differences in Citation
Practices) method, this paper rigorously tests the performance of six
cited-side normalization procedures based on the Thomson Reuters
classification system consisting of 172 sub-fields. We use six yearly
datasets from 1980 to 2004, with widely varying citation windows from
the publication year to May 2011. The main findings are the following
three. Firstly, as observed in previous research, within each year the
shapes of sub-field citation distributions are strikingly similar. This
paves the way for several normalization procedures to perform reasonably
well in reducing the effect on citation inequality of differences in
citation practices. Secondly, independently of the year of publication
and the length of the citation window, the effect of such differences
represents about 13% of total citation inequality. Thirdly, a recently
introduced two-parameter normalization scheme outperforms the other
normalization procedures over the entire period, reducing citation
disproportions to a level very close to the minimum achievable given the
data and the classification system. However, the traditional procedure
of using sub-field mean citations as normalization factors yields also
good results. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
A variety of bibliometric measures have been proposed to quantify the
impact of researchers and their work The h-index is a notable and widely
used example which aims to improve over simple metrics such as raw
counts of papers or citations. However, a limitation of this measure is
that it considers authors in isolation and does not account for
contributions through a collaborative team. To address this, we propose
a natural variant that we dub the Social h-index. The idea is to
redistribute the h-index score to reflect an individual's impact on the
research community. In addition to describing this new measure, we
provide examples, discuss its properties, and contrast with other
measures. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:
Knowledge organization (KO) and bibliometrics have traditionally been
seen as separate subfields of library and information science, but
bibliometric techniques make it possible to identify candidate terms for
thesauri and to organize knowledge by relating scientific papers and
authors to each other and thereby indicating kinds of relatedness and
semantic distance. It is therefore important to view bibliometric
techniques as a family of approaches to KO in order to illustrate their
relative strengths and weaknesses. The subfield of bibliometrics
concerned with citation analysis forms a distinct approach to KO which
is characterized by its social, historical and dynamic nature, its close
dependence on scholarly literature and its explicit kind of literary
warrant. The two main methods, co-citation analysis and bibliographic
coupling represent different things and thus neither can be considered
superior for all purposes. The main difference between traditional
knowledge organization systems (KOSs) and maps based on citation
analysis is that the first group represents intellectual KOSs, whereas
the second represents social KOSs. For this reason bibliometric maps
cannot be expected ever to be fully equivalent to scholarly taxonomies,
but they are - along with other forms of KOSs - valuable tools for
assisting users' to orient themselves to the information ecology. Like
other KOSs, citation-based maps cannot be neutral but will always be
based on researchers' decisions, which tend to favor certain interests
and views at the expense of others. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights

Abstract:
The main purpose of this paper is to evaluate the global performance and
to assess the current trends in research of water resource management.
The methods of informetric analysis were used to survey water resource
management related articles in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and
Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) during the past decades. The
publication records, subjects, journals, countries, institutes, authors,
citations and keywords were analyzed respectively for each paper. The
number of papers related to water resource management in 2012 was
approximately 8 times that of the year 2000 and hundreds of times more
than early 1990s. Water resource management related papers were
distributed unevenly by countries. The USA, P.R. China, Australia and UK
were the top contributing countries, also present normalized by dividing
with population that published most SCI papers as well as SSCI papers.
The largest water resource management research center is located in the
USA according to the number of publications and citations, with P.R.
China becoming more proficient in water resource management according to
the data from country and institute. In addition, the quality of papers
produced by developed countries is more advanced than developing
countries. All these efforts contributed to the indication in trends of
water resource management research on a global scale. Earlier water
resource management research appeared and was originally concentrated on
engineering, irrigation and geography. Issues gradually transferred to
management, economics and regime recently.

Abstract:
The High Quality Science Index (HQSI) was constructed on the basis of
the release of the Essential Science Indicators (Thomson Reuters) for
the period from January 1, 2002 to August 31, 2012. The HQSI was
computed for a country or territory as a sum of normalised scores of the
mean impact (citations per paper) and the percentage of papers that
reach the top-1% citation ranking. Expectedly, countries or territories
that are producing larger Gross National Income per capita and allocate
higher percentage of the produced economic wealth for the research and
development (R&D) were more likely to achieve prominence in the
scientific publications. The size of the country and its population were
not important factors to excel in scientific research. Since economic
and socio-demographic factors only partly predicted the quality of
science in a given country or territory, there is considerable space for
historical and science policy factors that could affect the quality of
science in a given country. Several countries being in almost identical
starting positions twenty years ago have developed on completely
different trajectories dependent on policies and decisions made by their
policy makers. Possibilities of how to improve reliability of measures
of scientific quality have been discussed.
