Abstract:
The ever-increasing concentration of people and economic growth in the largest cities relative to the rest of the country has slowed down or even reversed in many of the developed European countries over the last decade. This trend contradicts what the global cities, urban economics and new economic geography literature would predict. This trend can be interpreted from two points of view: (1) the trend is due to large obstacles to further large city urbanization and thus is inefficient or (2) this trend highlights alternative pathways to growth than the mega-city approach and may be as, if not more, efficient. This trend may be linked to Europe's uniquely polycentric urban structure with high number of small- and medium-sized cities. In addition, improvements in the access to services, including broadband, outside large cities may have facilitated the higher growth rates of smaller centres and rural regions and increased their appeal for residents and firms. Last but not lea!
st, negative externalities in the large cities, such as congestion costs, pollution, labour crowding and high cost of living, may increase the appeal of smaller centres and rural regions.

Abstract:
Background: The number of citations received is considered an index of study quality and impact. We aimed to examine the factors associated with the number of citations of published articles, focusing on the article length.
Methods: Original human studies published in the first trimester of 2006 in 5 major General Medicine journals were analyzed with regard to the number of authors and of author-affiliated institutions, title and abstract word count, article length (number of print pages), number of *bibliographic* references, study design, and 2006 journal impact factor (JIF). A multiple linear regression model was employed to identify the variables independently associated with the number of article citations received through January 2012.
Results: On univariate analysis the JIF, number of authors, article length, study design (interventional/observational and prospective/retrospective), title and abstract word count, number of author-affiliated institutions, and number of references were all associated with the number of citations received. On multivariate analysis with the logarithm of citations as the dependent variable, only article length [regression coefficient: 14.64 (95% confidence intervals: (5.76-23.50)] and JIF [3.37 (1.80-4.948)] independently predicted the number of citations. The variance of citations explained by these parameters was 51.2%.
Conclusion: In a sample of articles published in major General Medicine journals, in addition to journal impact factors, article length and number of authors independently predicted the number of citations. This may reflect a higher complexity level and quality of longer and multi-authored studies.

Abstract:
Let G be a directed graph on finitely many vertices and edges, and assign a positive weight to each edge on G. Fix vertices u and v and consider the set of paths that start at u and end at v, self-intersecting in any number of places along the way. For each path, sum the weights of its edges, and then list the path weights in increasing order. The asymptotic behaviour of this sequence is described, in terms of the structure and type of strongly connected components on the graph. As a special case, for a Markov chain the asymptotic probability of paths obeys either a power law scaling or a weaker type of scaling, depending on the structure of the transition matrix. This generalizes previous work by Mandelbrot and others, who established asymptotic power law scaling for special classes of Markov chains.

Abstract:
This paper introduces a new computational method to automatically estimate the International Publication Ratio (IPR) based on the analysis of *bibliographical* productions of Brazilian research groups, a task that would be too difficult (in many cases, impossible) to be performed manually. The proposed method explores the DOI number to identify the countries of every co-author who participated in each publication. Considering the bibliometric data from the Brazilian Lattes platform we show that is possible to make a good estimation of the IPR for research groups. Calculating the IPR is important in order to make a quantitative evaluation of the science progress and to establish a comparison between the academic institutions or knowledge areas. The experiments considering research groups, belonging to the 100 more collaborative researchers of five Brazilian major knowledge areas, confirm that the our proposal leads to an effective way to infer the IPR.

Abstract:
In this paper we report on the results of our current attempt to enhance *scientometric* measurements by employing social network analysis and mining methods. We begin by recalling of our previous work on the collection of a rich data on the social network of scientific collaboration. Then, we proceed to the description of the enhancements to the dataset. Most importantly, we report on the three separate results obtained from the extended social network. The analysis of the triad closure consensus in the dataset reveals interesting patterns regarding the underlying nature of scientific collaboration. Even more evident are the results of the betweenness centrality analysis, where a periodic pattern emerges both in co-authorship and co-participant networks. Finally, we conclude with the introduction of a complex model of scientific career development which uses conditional probability sequential patterns.

Abstract:
In the present paper, we intend to define a parallel between XBRL concept and a new concept defined by authors, called XSRL eXtensible Science Reporting Language in order to analyze the opportunity of transposing XBLR technology from financial reporting to *scientometrics* reporting. The new concept XSLR analyses the opportunity of operating semantically with science-type taxonomies, defined according to the model of financial reporting architecture. Title:
A *Bibliometric* Analysis of Evaluative Medical Education Studies: Characteristics and Indexing Accuracy

Abstract:
Purpose
To determine the characteristics of medical education studies published in general and internal medicine (GIM) and medical education journals, and to analyze the accuracy of their indexing.
Method
The authors identified the five GIM and five medical education journals that published the most articles indexed in MEDLINE as medical education during January 2001 to January 2010. They searched Ovid MEDLINE for evaluative medical education studies published in these journals during this period and classified them as quantitative or qualitative studies according to MEDLINE indexing. They also examined themes and learner levels targeted. Using a random sample of records, they assessed the accuracy of study-type indexing.
Results
Of 4,418 records retrieved, 3,853 (87.2%) were from medical education journals and 565 (12.3%) were from GIM journals. Qualitative studies and program evaluations were more prevalent within medical education journals, whereas GIM journals published a higher proportion of clinical trials and systematic reviews (chi(2) = 74.28, df = 3, P<.001). Medical education journals had a concentration of studies targeting medical students, whereas GIM journals had a concentration targeting residents; themes were similar. The authors confirmed that 170 (56.7%) of the 300 sampled articles were correctly classified in MEDLINE as evaluative studies.
Conclusions
The majority of the identified evaluative studies were published in medical education journals, confirming the integrity of medical education as a specialty. Findings concerning the study types published in medical education versus GIM journals are important for medical education researchers who seek to publish outside the field's specialty journals.

Abstract:
Statistics is a key tool to validate the conclusions of scientific papers. However, errors in using this method, including the use of low power tests and inadequate analysis of the studies are still frequent. This research identified, through a census of 307 articles published between 2000 and 2010 in the Journal Archives of Veterinary Science, that 34% of the papers had made conclusions without statistical support, 34% were supported by statistical methods inadequate to the evaluated database, whereas only 32% have presented conclusions based on statistical methods consistent with the structure of the analyzed data. Furthermore, the percentage of inadequate conclusions may be even higher, of up to 47%, since some of the articles that had not used statistical analysis should have applied some method for the validation of their conclusions. The results presented herein warn against the misuse of statistical methods that compromise the quality and reliability of the conclusion!

Abstract:
This study presents the panoramic view of the described issues related to coverage, services and bibliometrics for Research Evaluation (RE) purposes by three reference enhanced databases. The researchers' viewpoint is based on the relevant literature and data accessed from most preferred citation sources: Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar. The study seeks the worldview challenges, highlights and theorizes the core issues for those regions and disciplines that have more challenges and fewer opportunities in getting publishing, citing and cited by. It discusses the new insights and directs the stakeholders to explore other possible sources, metrics and evaluation techniques for RE.

Abstract:
Freshwater fisheries are mainly small-scale activities and occur mostly in developing countries. These fisheries are recognized for its chronic lack of data and incipient knowledge when compared to large-scale fisheries, despite its socioeconomic and food security relevance. Brazil is a good model of small-scale freshwater fisheries country because it shares similar characteristics and shortcomings of many other countries in South America, Africa and Asia, where these activities prevail. This work aims to carry out a broad and comprehensive analysis of the approaches and limitations of Brazilian freshwater fisheries studies through a scientometric analysis. We conducted an exhaustive survey of scientific platforms such as the Web of Knowledge Thomson Reuters (ISI), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar and CNPq Lattes Curriculum Vitae Database. We found that the platforms ISI and SciELO were limited for this area of knowledge as they recovered only 47!
% of the 186 studies reviewed. Brazilian freshwater fisheries studies were published in 72 journals and were conducted by 234 researchers, with very few specialists. On average the data processing into scientific information took 5 years, and half of the studies were conducted in short time scale (less than 2 years long) mostly by research institutions and universities. The number studies declined since the year 2008, after the creation of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquiculture, which indicate that the fallacy of disregarding scientific knowledge may be permeating decision making agencies as already happen in the past in Brazil. The combination of these factors may cause slow and inefficient decision-making and management based on the best available science. Our results also highlighted the importance of multidisciplinarity in the training of human resources to work in the fishing sector.

Abstract:
Purpose - The aim of this paper is to determine the extent to which readers perceive correctly the reasons why authors cite items in scholarly texts.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors of ten library and information science articles provided the reasons for citing material in their articles and these reasons were compared with those suggested independently by readers of the articles.
Findings - Readers are able to perceive correctly author reasons for citation only to a very limited extent. Research limitations/implications - Limitations are a small sample of ten articles and 45 reader assessments of those articles, and the use of a single classification of reasons for citation.
Practical implications - The findings call into question techniques such as citation context analysis that are based on the assumption that readers understand the reasons why authors cite material.
Originality/value - This is the first attempt to compare author and reader reasons for citation and hence to validate the use of citation context analysis.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to analyse natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES)-related publications over the last 5 years. A systematic literature search was done to retrieve publications related to NOTES from 2006 to 2011. The following variables were recorded: year of publication; article type; study design; setting; Journal Citation Reports (R) journal category; authors area of surgical speciality; geographic area of origin; surgical procedure; NOTES technique; NOTES access route; number of clinical cases. A time-trend analysis was performed by comparing early (2006-2008) and late (2009-2011) study periods. Overall, 644 publications were included in the analysis and most papers were found in general surgery journals (50.9%). Studies were most frequently clinical series (43.9%) and animal experimental (48%), with the articles focusing primarily on cholecystectomy, access creation and closure, and peritoneoscopy. Pure NOTES techniques were performed in most of!
the published reports (85%) with the remaining cases being hybrid NOTES (7.4%) and NOTES-assisted procedures (6.1%). The access routes included transgastric (52.5%), transcolonic (12.3%), transvesical (12.5%), transvaginal (10.5%), and combined (12.3%). From the early to the late period, there was a significant increase in the number of randomised controlled trials (5.6% vs 7.2%) or non-randomised but comparative studies (5.6% vs 22.9%) (P < 0.001) and there was also a significant increase in the number of colorectal procedures and nephrectomies (P = 0.002). Pure NOTES remained the most studied approach over the years but with increased investigation in the field of NOTES-assisted techniques (P = 0.001). There was also a significant increase in the adoption of transvesical access (7% vs 15.6%) (P = 0.007). NOTES is in a developmental stage and much work is still needed to refine techniques, verify safety and document efficacy. Since the first description of the concept of !
NOTES, >2000 clinical cases, irrespective of specialty, have b!

Abstract:
Objective: This research seeks to understand the publication types and ages cited most often in environmental health literature and the most commonly cited journal titles.
Methods: From the 43,896 items cited in Environmental Health Perspectives and the Journal of Environmental Health during 2008-2010, 2 random samples were drawn: First, 1,042 items representing all citations were analyzed with respect to publication type, age, and Internet link. Second, the cited journal name and citation age were recorded for 1,038 items culled from only citations to journal articles. All journal titles were classified into Bradford zones and assigned subject disciplines.
Results: Journal articles (n=891, 85.5%) were the most heavily cited publication type. Cited items' publication years ranged from 1951 to 2010. Close to half (49.1%) of all cited items were published 5 or fewer years previous. Sixteen journal titles (3.9%) accounted for 32.5% of all cited journal articles. The 3 most common subject disciplines-"Public, Environmental & Occupational Health," "Environmental Sciences," and "Toxicology"-accounted for 21.6% of all unique journal titles and 45.3% of all citations.
Conclusions: Environmental health citation patterns differ from other public health disciplines in terms of cited publication types, cited journals, and age of citations.

Abstract:
Objectives: The research identified the publication types and ages most frequently cited in the infectious diseases literature and the most commonly cited journals.
Methods: From 2008-2010, 5,056 articles in 5 infectious diseases journals cited 166,650 items. Two random samples were drawn: one (n=1,060) from the total set of citations and one (n=1,060) from the citations to journal articles. For each sample citation, publication type and date, age of cited item, and inclusion of uniform resource locator (URL) were collected. For each item in the cited journal articles sample, journal title, publication date, and age of the cited article were collected. Bradford zones were used for further analysis.
Results: Journal articles (91%, n=963) made up the bulk of cited items, followed by miscellaneous items (4.6%, n=49). Dates of publication for cited items ranged from 1933-2010 (mean=2001, mode=2007). Over half (50.2%, n=483) of cited journal articles were published within the previous 5 years. The journal article citations included 358 unique journal titles.
Discussion: The citations to current and older publications in a range of disciplines, heavy citation of journals, and citation of miscellaneous and government documents revealed the depth and breadth of resources needed for the study of infectious diseases.

Abstract:
Objectives: To investigate the feasibility of using research papers cited in clinical guidelines as a way to track the impact of particular funding streams or sources.
Setting: In recent years, medical research funders have made efforts to enhance the understanding of the impact of their funded research and to provide evidence of the 'value' of investments in particular areas of research. One of the most challenging areas of research evaluation is around impact on policy and practice. In the UK, the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) provide clinical guidelines, which bring together current high-quality evidence on the diagnosis and treatment of clinical problems. Research referenced in these guidelines is an indication of its potential to have real impact on health policy and practice.
Design: This study is based on analysis of the authorship and funding attribution of research cited in two NICE clinical guidelines: dementia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Results: Analysis identified that around a third of papers cited in the two NICE guidelines had at least one author based in the UK. In both cases, about half of these UK attributed papers contained acknowledgements which allowed the source of funding for the research to be identified. The research cited in these guidelines was found to have been supported by a diverse set of funders from different sectors. The study also investigated the contribution of research groups based in universities, industry and the public sector.
Conclusions: The study found that there is great potential for guidelines to be used as sources of information on the quality of the research used in their development and that it is possible to track the source of the funding of the research. The challenge is in harnessing the relevant information to track this in an efficient way.

Abstract:
Background Systematic reviews risk producing biased conclusions if a comprehensive search to identify eligible studies is not undertaken, but little evidence exists to guide prioritisation of databases to search when resources are limited. Objectives A systematic review examining interventions for managing frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) was used to investigate the performance of *bibliographic* databases in identifying the included studies, the smallest combination of databases required to retrieve all included studies, and the performance of the searches themselves. Methods We calculated the yield of included studies from each of 15 databases, and the recall and precision of each search strategy. We investigated differences between the presence of a record in a database and its retrieval. Results Thirty of 31 studies were present in at least one database. Yields of individual databases ranged from 0% to 90% (median 23%). Two combinations of databases identified all 3!
0 studies: Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) and Science Citation Index (SCI); or CENTRAL, MEDLINE and PreMEDLINE. Conclusions In a systematic review of a range of interventions used to manage frozen shoulder, at least two databases and reference checking were required to retrieve all included studies, but searching for future reviews should not be restricted.

Abstract:

We introduce an automated method for the bottom-up reconstruction of the cognitive evolution of science, based on big-data issued from digital libraries, and modeled as lineage relationships between scientific fields. We refer to these dynamic structures as phylomemetic networks or phylomemies, by analogy with biological evolution; and we show that they exhibit strong regularities, with clearly identifiable phylomemetic patterns. Some structural properties of the scientific fields - in particular their density -, which are defined independently of the phylomemy reconstruction, are clearly correlated with their status and their fate in the phylomemy (like their age or their short term survival). Within the framework of a quantitative epistemology, this approach raises the question of predictibility for science evolution, and sketches a prototypical life cycle of the scientific fields: an increase of their cohesion after their emergence, the renewal of their conceptual backgro!

und through branching or merging events, before decaying when their density is getting too low.

Background: The h-index is a commonly used metric for evaluating the publication performance of researchers. However, in a multidisciplinary field such as medical informatics, interpreting the h-index is a challenge because researchers tend to have diverse home disciplines, ranging from clinical areas to computer science, basic science, and the social sciences, each with different publication performance profiles.

Objective: To construct a reference standard for interpreting the h-index of medical informatics researchers based on the performance of their peers.

Methods: Using a sample of authors with articles published over the 5-year period 2006-2011 in the 2 top journals in medical informatics (as determined by *impact factor*), we computed their h-index using the Scopus database. Percentiles were computed to create a 6-level benchmark, similar in scheme to one used by the US National Science Foundation, and a 10-level benchmark.

Results: The 2 benchmarks can be used to place medical informatics researchers in an ordered category based on the performance of their peers. A validation exercise mapped the benchmark levels to the ranks of medical informatics academic faculty in the United States. The 10-level benchmark tracked academic rank better (with no ties) and is therefore more suitable for practical use.

Conclusions: Our 10-level benchmark provides an objective basis to evaluate and compare the publication performance of medical informatics researchers with that of their peers using the h-index. (J Med Internet Res 2012;14(5):e144) doi: 10.2196/jmir.2177

Abstract:
Background: The number of citations received is considered an index of study quality and impact. We aimed to examine the factors associated with the number of citations of published articles, focusing on the article length.
Methods: Original human studies published in the first trimester of 2006 in 5 major General Medicine journals were analyzed with regard to the number of authors and of author-affiliated institutions, title and abstract word count, article length (number of print pages), number of bibliographic references, study design, and 2006 journal *impact factor* (JIF).
