Self-citation rates of scientific and technical journals in SCI from China, Japan, India, and Korea

Abstract:
We analyze the self-citation rates of scientific and technical journals in the SCI database from China, Japan, India, and Korea from 2007 to 2009. Korea has the highest self-citation rate, Japan the lowest. Compared with 2007, the overall level of self-citation rate declined across all four countries in 2008. In 2009, however, the self-citation rate of the three countries other than China rose a little. The total cited frequency and impact factor of excessive self-citing journals and zero self-citation journal in China, Japan, India, and Korea are all lower than those of the mean of all journals included in the SCI in 2009. It appears that the academic influence of journals whose self-citation rates is either too low or too high is small.

Abstract:
The increasing number of scientific journals, especially over the last 20 years, created the need for methodologies based on simple metrics, to accurately capture the "quality" of those journals and their impact on the scientific community. Especially in the case of journals from the field of forestry, relatively little work has been conducted on providing valid journal classifications. In this paper we attempt to assess the impact of journals from this field in terms of bibliometric data. In addition to the already proposed metrics (complementary to the journal h-index), we also apply a new measure to rank journals, that provides a more balanced evaluation of the journal performance, by adjusting for various biases affecting the h-index. We examined the relationships between various bibliometric indicators proposed for assessing the journal impact and wo found high correlations between most indices, with only few exceptions. According to citation analysis, Canadian Journal !
of Forest Research, Journal of Vegetation Science, Forest Science, Tree Physiology, International Journal of Wildland Fire, Holzforschung, Trees-Structure and Function, Silva Fennica, Agricultural and Forest Meteorology and Wood and Fiber Science are the top forestry journals. These publish articles related to all the domains of forestry science. More specialized journals are also included, dealing with specific issues of scientific interest and also of major importance to the scientific community.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the fitness-for-purpose and soundness of bibliometric parameters for measuring and elucidating the research performance of individual researchers in the field of education sciences in Switzerland. In order to take into account the specificities of publication practices of researchers in education sciences, the analyses are based on two separate databases: Web of Science and Google Scholar. Both databases show a very unequal distribution of the individual research output, and the indicators used to measure research performance (quantity of publications and citation impact) from the two data sources are highly positively correlated. However, individual characteristics of the researchers, such as age, gender and academic position, that serve to explain the great variance in research performance, can only be identified if the Web of Science is used as a benchmark of research performance. The results indicate that Google Scholar is so inclusive that it imp!
edes a meaningful interpretation of the data. However, the Web of Science inclusion policy for journals is also associated with certain shortcomings that put some researchers at an unjustified disadvantage. Therefore, problems currently exist in regard to both citation databases when used to benchmark individual research performance.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize the literature associated with the dry eye field. Methods: An advanced search using Thomson Reuters Web of Science's Science Citation Index yielded 7,225 unique articles related to dry eye disease. All results underwent visual inspection to ensure that the final list included only literature associated with dry eye in some way. The most frequently cited articles were characterized by number of citations, author, institution, country of origin, year of publication, and source title. Results: The h-index (Hirsch index) of literature associated with dry eye was 100. The two most frequent topics among the top 25 cited articles were lacrimal gland structure and physiology and treatment methods for ocular surface disease. The top-cited author, institution, country, and source title were Kazuo Tsubota, Harvard University, the United States, and Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, respectively. The most highly cited !
article associated with the dry eye field (n=1, 180) was "Preliminary criteria for the classification of Sjogrens syndrome - Results of a prospective concerted action supported by the European Community," authored in 1993 by C. Vitali. Conclusions: This analysis reviewed the citation frequency of the top-cited articles related to dry eye disease. This information aids understanding of the history and development of dry eye research, in addition to the impact and characteristics of the contributors to the field.

Abstract:
The present study explores the characteristics of the literature on the production of bioenergy from biomass published during the last three decades, based on the databases of Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and its implications using the scientometric techniques. The results of this study reveal that the research output in this field has grown exponentially during this period reaching to 5892 papers in total with paralleling enormous changes in the research landscape. Papers are mostly journal articles, reviews, and proceedings, being predominantly in English. The US is the most publishing single country producing 27% of the output, but lagging significantly behind the Europe as a whole (near 50%). The "Chinese Academy of Sciences" is the most contributing institution where the most publishing author is "A Demirbas". "Biomass & Bioenergy" is the most publishing journal whilst, "Energy & Fuels" is the most published subject ar!
ea. The total number of citations is 82,732, giving a ratio for the "Average Citations per Item" as 13.83 and "H-index" as 102. The results of this first-ever such study of its kind show that the scientometric analysis has a great potential to gain valuable insights into the evolution of the research on the production of bioenergy from biomass. Abstract:
Objective. Determine current health services research (HSR) publication trends in major general otolaryngology journals.
Study Design. Bibliometric analysis.
Methods. All main issues of 8 high-impact general-interest otolaryngology journals published worldwide in 2002, 2005, 2008, and 2011 were searched for HSR-related publications. To qualify as HSR, the abstract of the article must discuss access to care, cost, delivery of care, financing, health organizational or system issues, quality of care, resource utilization, and/or health outcomes. Otolaryngology topics were classified as general, pediatrics, oncology, otology and neurotology, sleep disorders, sinonasal disease, facial plastics, and/or laryngology. Other key measures included study authorship and external sponsorship or mechanism of support.
Results. Of 5958 total articles, 449 (7.5%) qualified as HSR. There was a statistically significant increase in the number of HSR publications across all journals from 2002 to 2011 (P < .001). Outcomes research (337, 75.1%) was the most common type of HSR being published. The most common subject was oncology (112, 24.9%), whereas the least represented was trauma and facial plastics (4, 0.9%). First and corresponding authors were based in 31 countries, although the United States was the predominant country of origin. Nearly 95% of HSR articles in the current sample demonstrated multidisciplinary authorship. An estimated 22.9% of first authors and 17.8% of corresponding authors were female. Two-thirds of HSR publications reported no external sponsor, whereas the remainder was supported most commonly by philanthropy and hospital-based sources.
Conclusion. Health services research is an international, multidisciplinary field of inquiry with an increasing presence in major otolaryngology journals.

Abstract:
The increasing number of scientific journals, especially over the last 20 years, created the need for methodologies based on simple metrics, to accurately capture the "quality" of those journals and their impact on the scientific community. Especially in the case of journals from the field of forestry, relatively little work has been conducted on providing valid journal classifications. In this paper we attempt to assess the impact of journals from this field in terms of bibliometric data. In addition to the already proposed metrics (complementary to the journal h-index), we also apply a new measure to rank journals, that provides a more balanced evaluation of the journal performance, by adjusting for various biases affecting the h-index. We examined the relationships between various bibliometric indicators proposed for assessing the journal impact and wo found high correlations between most indices, with only few exceptions. According to citation analysis, Canadian Journal !
of Forest Research, Journal of Vegetation Science, Forest Science, Tree Physiology, International Journal of Wildland Fire, Holzforschung, Trees-Structure and Function, Silva Fennica, Agricultural and Forest Meteorology and Wood and Fiber Science are the top forestry journals. These publish articles related to all the domains of forestry science. More specialized journals are also included, dealing with specific issues of scientific interest and also of major importance to the scientific community.

Abstract:
The technique of anaerobic fermentation for butanol production have arosen increasing attention, since the butanol as regeneration bioenergy is important to solve the world's energy shortage problem. This study uses a bibliometric approach to quantitatively assess current research trends on anaerobic digestion for butanol, by using the data from the Science Citation Index-Expended database and the Derwent Innovations index of the Web of Science. A metric analysis was made on related literature and patents in these two databases, which was indexed considerly from 2001 to 2011. Results indicated that in recent years there had been a notable growth trend in publication outputs. During this period, USA had the largest number of publications. However, of all the institutes, CHINESE ACAD SCI held primacy over the most publications. The mainstream of anaerobic digestion for butyl alcohol research was in the environmental chemistry, engineering, biochemistry molecular biology relate!

Three journals including Journal of chemical and engineering data, Bioresource Technology, Journal of chromatography, Journal of chemical thermodynamics were the most popular ones in this field. In addition, keyword analysis shows that the process, reactor, pretreatment and co-digestion were the hotpots of the latest 18 years. Abstract:
Canola, a high-value, export-oriented agricultural commodity, was developed in Canada over the course of 40 years in public institutions, driven by imported technology and imported research scientists. The evolution of canola R&D closely mirrors the evolution of the Triple Helix Models of innovation. Through the application of longitudinal citation analysis, using five-year intervals, publications from Canadian public institutions involved in canola R&D have been analyzed. In the most recent five-year interval, the relative citation rates of public sector research increased by 60% compared to the global average. A unique fixed-effect negative binomial regression model is used to demonstrate the critical relationship between the institutional arrangement that governs collaboration and the production of knowledge that underscores technological innovation. Abstract:
This paper investigates the fitness-for-purpose and soundness of bibliometric parameters for measuring and elucidating the research performance of individual researchers in the field of education sciences in Switzerland. In order to take into account the specificities of publication practices of researchers in education sciences, the analyses are based on two separate databases: Web of Science and Google Scholar. Both databases show a very unequal distribution of the individual research output, and the indicators used to measure research performance (quantity of publications and citation impact) from the two data sources are highly positively correlated. However, individual characteristics of the researchers, such as age, gender and academic position, that serve to explain the great variance in research performance, can only be identified if the Web of Science is used as a benchmark of research performance. The results indicate that Google Scholar is so inclusive that it imp!
edes a meaningful interpretation of the data. However, the Web of Science inclusion policy for journals is also associated with certain shortcomings that put some researchers at an unjustified disadvantage. Therefore, problems currently exist in regard to both citation databases when used to benchmark individual research performance.

Abstract:
Zipf's law on word frequency and Heaps' law on the growth of distinct words are observed in Indo-European language family, but it does not hold for languages like Chinese, Japanese and Korean. These languages consist of characters, and are of very limited dictionary sizes. Extensive experiments show that: (i) The character frequency distribution follows a power law with exponent close to one, at which the corresponding Zipf's exponent diverges. Indeed, the character frequency decays exponentially in the Zipf's plot. (ii) The number of distinct characters grows with the text length in three stages: It grows linearly in the beginning, then turns to a logarithmical form, and eventually saturates. A theoretical model for writing process is proposed, which embodies the rich-get-richer mechanism and the effects of limited dictionary size. Experiments, simulations and analytical solutions agree well with each other. This work refines the understanding about Zipf's and Heaps' laws i!

The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) event at similar to 55.5 Ma, is characterized by globally elevated temperatures, a negative delta C-13 excursion and major biotic changes on land and in the oceans, including the major extinction of deep-sea benthic foraminifera. Increased acidity of the oceans and associated shallowing of the calcite compensation depth led to dissolution of deep-sea carbonates in various ocean basins during the PETM. As a result, the post-extinction benthic foraminiferal assemblages, which were locally dominated by agglutinated taxa such as Glomospira spp./Repmanina charoides, have been traditionally interpreted as a result of dissolution of calcareous-shelled species. We carried out a thorough bibliographic revision of the post-extinction assemblages in widely distributed land-based sections and marine cores to: 1) document the paleogeographical extent on the so-called "Glomospira acme," 2) compare the characteristics among sites where the acme i!
s present, and 3) assess the paleoenvironmental conditions that could have potentially controlled the occurrence of the Glomospira acme. We recognized the early Eocene (calcareous plankton biozones NP9 and P5) Glomospira acme in the Tethys and along the eastern margin of the North Atlantic Ocean. The comparison of the sedimentological and paleoenvironmental evolution across the PETM in these areas led us to conclude that the proliferation of Glomospira spp./R. charoides may have been related not only to CaCO3 dissolution, but also to the pulsed input of siliciclastic material resulting from continental erosion or gravitational fluxes. Increased terrestrial runoff in nearshore-marine sediments is consistent with an enhanced hydrological regime or higher seasonality or episodicity, as previously proposed for the PETM, and with the paleogeographical distribution of the continental margins and slopes in the Tethys and northeast Atlantic region, where the Glomospira acme has bee!

ity refractory organic matter would be transported to the seafloor, allowing the rapid proliferation of Glomospira spp./R. charoides.

Abstract:
The increasing number of scientific journals, especially over the last 20 years, created the need for methodologies based on simple metrics, to accurately capture the "quality" of those journals and their impact on the scientific community. Especially in the case of journals from the field of forestry, relatively little work has been conducted on providing valid journal classifications. In this paper we attempt to assess the impact of journals from this field in terms of bibliometric data. In addition to the already proposed metrics (complementary to the journal h-index), we also apply a new measure to rank journals, that provides a more balanced evaluation of the journal performance, by adjusting for various biases affecting the h-index. We examined the relationships between various bibliometric indicators proposed for assessing the journal impact and wo found high correlations between most indices, with only few exceptions. According to citation analysis, Canadian Journal !
of Forest Research, Journal of Vegetation Science, Forest Science, Tree Physiology, International Journal of Wildland Fire, Holzforschung, Trees-Structure and Function, Silva Fennica, Agricultural and Forest Meteorology and Wood and Fiber Science are the top forestry journals. These publish articles related to all the domains of forestry science. More specialized journals are also included, dealing with specific issues of scientific interest and also of major importance to the scientific community.

Abstract:
Objectives: To explore temporal trends, geographic distribution, and socioeconomic determinants of scientific production in the field of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease (CCD) rehabilitation.
Data Sources: Citations from 1967 to 2008 were downloaded from the PubMed database. Core of the search strategy was the key word cardiovascular diseases in the Medical Subject Headings major field with the subheading rehabilitation. Journal Citation Reports was used to assign an *impact factor* (IF). Demographic and economic data were retrieved from the International Monetary Fund.
Study Selection: All articles retrieved were included in the bibliometric analysis.
Data Extraction: The search strategy was validated on a random sample of the articles retrieved. The search quality reflected the level of error of the PubMed database.
Data Synthesis: Publications retrieved were 10,379 and have grown 8.6 times in 40 years, faster than the all-diseases rehabilitation field (7.8 times), with a particularly steep growth for cerebrovascular diseases in the last 15 years (5 times). However, in the last decade, the articles' quality (IF) decreased. From 1994 to 2008, 3466 citations were retrieved; 44.4% came from the European Union and 30.3% from the United States. The highest mean IF was reported for France (4.127). The United Kingdom and some relatively small northern European Union countries had the best ratio of IF (sum) to resident population or to gross domestic product. The most frequently used key word was stroke, and 3 journals (Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Clinical Rehabilitation, and Stroke) published one quarter of the articles.
Conclusions: The overall scientific production in the field of CCD rehabilitation showed a steep growth in the last decade, especially because of cerebrovaseular research. In the same period, a decrease in the overall IF was observed. The European Union and the United States contributed 3 of every 4 articles in the field, although some Asian countries showed promising performance. Abstract:
Import-export studies use citation data to describe the exchange of knowledge and ideas between different disciplines. This paper reports the use of journal impact factors (IF) to quantify the extent to which an individual discipline, specifically librarianship and information science (LIS), is able to export knowledge to other disciplines. Web of Science searches were used to identify citations to 232 high quality LIS publications extracted from submissions to the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. These publications resulted in 1061 knowledge exports to 444 unique, non-LIS citing journals, for which IFs were taken from the Journal Citation Reports database and normalised in order to minimise inter-disciplinary differences in citation behaviour. Non-LIS citing journals are shown to have IFs that are above the average for their subject categories, with this pattern of behaviour being considerably more pronounced for citations to LIS research published in non-LIS, rather!

Abstract:
Identifying citation classics in the field is one of the key methodologies used to conduct a systematic evaluation of research performance. The objective of this study was to determine the most frequently cited articles published in journals that are placed under the 'respiratory system' subject category (Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) Journal Citation Reports) and to compare them with the most frequently cited respiratory-related articles published in any journal, regardless of subject category. The authors utilized the ISI Journal Citation Reports: Science Edition 2010 database in April 2012 to determine the most frequently cited articles by respiratory system subject category and by respiratory-related keywords. The top 50 most-cited articles were identified in each category and evaluated according to various characteristics. The majority of these papers originated from the United States. The median numbers of citations for the top 50 cited articles stratified!
by respiratory system subject category and respiratory-related keywords were 841.5 and 2701, respectively. Half of the top 50 cited articles identified by respiratory-related keywords were published in general medical or basic science journals, whereas only three out of these were published in journals under the respiratory system subject category in ISI Journal Citation Reports. In summary, respiratory-related articles published in general medical or science journals attracted more citations than those published in the specific respiratory journals.

Abstract:
Purpose: To analyze the aggregate *impact factor* (AIF) in ophthalmology, its inflation rate, and its relation to other subject fields. Methods: A retrospective, database review of all subject fields in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), Science edition. Citation data, AIF, number of journals and citations from the years 2003-2011 were analyzed. Data were retrieved from JCR. Future trends were calculated using a linear regression method. Results: The AIF varies considerably between subjects. It shows also an inflation rate, which varies annually. The AIF inflation rate in ophthalmology was not as high as the background AIF inflation rate. Conclusions: The AIF inflation rate caused the AIF to increase annually. Not considering these variations in the AIF between years and between fields will make the AIF as a bibliometric tool inappropriate. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Basel

Abstract:
Despite of its small size, the Central American country of Costa Rica is internationally recognized as one of the world leaders in conservation and as the Central American leader in science. There have been no recent studies on the country's scientific production. The objective of this study was to analyze the Costa Rican scientific output as represented in the Science Citation Index Expanded. All documents with "Costa Rica" in the address field from 1981 to 2010 were included (total 6 801 publications). Articles (79%) were more frequent than other types of publication and were mostly in English (83%). Revista de Biologia Tropical published the most articles (17%), followed by Toxicon and Turrialba (2.5%). The New England Journal of Medicine had the highest *impact factor* (53.484) with nine articles. Of 5 343 articles with known institutional address, 63% were internationally collaborative articles (most with the USA) with h index 91 and citation per publication 18. A total!
of 81% of all articles were inter-institutionally collaborative articles, led by the Universidad de Costa Rica. This reflects research and education agreements among these countries. Universidad de Costa Rica ranked top one in inter-institutionally collaborative articles, the rank of the total inter-institutionally collaborative articles, and the rank of first author articles and corresponding author articles. Studied subjects and journals in our sample are in agreement with dominant science fields and journals in Costa Rica. Articles with the highest citation were published in New England Journal of Medicine. The largest citation of medical articles reflects the general interest and wider readership of this subject. All corresponding and first authors of the high impact articles were not from Costa Rica. In conclusion, the scientific output of Costa Rican authors is strong in the areas related to conservation but the impact is higher for biomedical articles, and Costa Ric!

Abstract:
*Zipf-Mandelbrot* distributions are commonly used to model natural phenomena where the frequency of an event's occurrence is inversely proportional to its rank based on that frequency of occurrence. This discrete distribution typically exhibits a large number of rare events; however, it may be of interest to obtain reasonable limits that bound the majority of the number of different events. We propose the use of statistical tolerance limits as a way to quantify such a bound. The tolerance limits are constructed using Wald confidence limits for the *Zipf-Mandelbrot* parameters and are shown through a simulation study to have coverage probabilities near the nominal levels. We also calculate *Zipf-Mandelbrot* tolerance limits for two real datasets and discuss the associated computer code developed for the R. programming language. Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:
The study compares the coverage, ranking, impact and subject categorization of Library and Information Science journals, specifically, 79 titles based on data from Web of Science (WoS) and 128 titles from Scopus. Comparisons were made based on prestige factor scores reported in 2010 Journal Citation Reports and SCImago Journal Rank 2010 and noting the change in ranking when the differences are calculated. The rank normalized impact factor and the Library of Congress Classification System were used to compare impact rankings and subject categorization. There was high degree of similarity in rank normalized impact factor of titles in both WoS and Scopus databases. The searches found 162 journals, with 45 journals appearing in both databases. The rankings obtained for normalized impact scores confirm higher impact scores for titles covered in Scopus because of its larger coverage of titles. There was mismatch of subject categorization among 34 journal titles in both databases a!
nd 22 of the titles were not classified under Z subject headings in the Library of Congress catalogue. The results revealed the changes in journal title rankings when normalized, and the categorization of some journal titles in these databases might be incorrect.

Abstract:
Since machine-readable documents have become widespread, some recent studies have proposed retrieval methods using a combination of citation linkage and its context. In the case of co-citation linkage, there have been attempts to discern 'strong' co-citations from 'weak' ones by examining the positions of citations in a document. However, this promising concept has not yet been sufficiently evaluated, and it remains unclear whether search performance is significantly improved. Therefore, this paper explores the effects of using co-citation context more deeply and more widely by comparing the search performance of six retrieval methods, which differ as to whether co-citation context and normalization using cited frequency are used. For empirically evaluating the effects, a special test collection was created from CiteSeer Metadata, and the search performances of the six retrieval methods were compared by two IR metrics (AP and nDCG). The main conclusions of this paper are: (1!
) co-citation context has a positive effect on co-citation searching; (2) the normalization technique using cited frequency is useful for context-based co-citation searching; (3) approaches of using co-citation context tend to affect the characteristics of search performance.

Abstract:
How scientific progress functions in detail and what the specific prerequisites for scientific breakthroughs in a given research area are, is still unclear today. According to philosopher of science Thomas S. Kuhn, scientific advancement takes place via paradigm shift. As a principle supplementing Kuhn's theory, we proposed the Anna Karenina principle: a new paradigm can be successful only when several key prerequisites are fulfilled (e.g., verified by means of independent data and methods). If any one of these prerequisites is not fulfilled, the paradigm will not be successful. Aiming at investigating the schema of paradigm shift supplemented by the Anna Karenina principle with the aid of concrete examples from science, in this study we analyze one of the most important scientific revolutions: the shift from a fixed to a mobile worldview in geoscientific thinking. This paradigm shift will be explained based on key papers that played a decisive role, selected carefully from !
reviews in the literature. The account of the development will be complemented by empirical findings that were produced based on publication and citation data using the software Histcite.

Abstract:
Science is principally driven by the efforts of a vanishingly small fraction of researchers publishing the majority of scientific research and garnering the majority of citations. Despite this well-established trend, knowledge of exactly how many articles these researchers publish, how highly they are cited, and how they achieved their distinctive accomplishments is meager. This article examines the publication and citation patterns of the world's most highly cited environmental scientists and ecologists, inquiring into their levels of scientific productivity and visibility, examining relationships between scientific productivity and quality within their research programs, and considering how different publication strategies contribute to these distinctive successes. Generally speaking, highly cited researchers are also highly productive, publishing on average well over 100 articles each. Furthermore, articles published by this group are more highly cited on average than art!
icles published in premier generalist journal like Nature and Science, and their citation to publication ratios are more equitably distributed than is typical. Research specialization and primacy of authorship are important determinants of citation frequency, while geographic differences and collaborative propensity matter less. The article closes with a set of suggestions for those wishing to increase the use of their research by the scientific community.

Abstract:
Import-export studies use citation data to describe the exchange of knowledge and ideas between different disciplines. This paper reports the use of journal impact factors (IF) to quantify the extent to which an individual discipline, specifically librarianship and information science (LIS), is able to export knowledge to other disciplines. Web of Science searches were used to identify citations to 232 high quality LIS publications extracted from submissions to the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise. These publications resulted in 1061 knowledge exports to 444 unique, non-LIS citing journals, for which IFs were taken from the Journal Citation Reports database and normalised in order to minimise inter-disciplinary differences in citation behaviour. Non-LIS citing journals are shown to have IFs that are above the average for their subject categories, with this pattern of behaviour being considerably more pronounced for citations to LIS research published in non-LIS, rather!

Abstract:
We conduct an evaluation of 43 accounting journals using the author affiliation index (AAI). Our results suggest that the Australian Business Dean's Council (ABDC) ratings are consistent with the AAI-based rankings. Nonetheless, there are a few highly (lowly) regarded accounting journals in terms of AAI receiving a relatively lower (higher) rating in the ABDC journal ranking list. The co-authorship patterns suggest that top AAI and near-top AAI journals actually see more co-authorship from scholars in top programs and scholars in other programs (both ranked 21-100 and 'others').

Abstract:
Many academic researches about Wenchuan earthquake have been carried out since 2008 till now. This paper aims to analyze the research field of the Wenchuan Earthquake by using scientometrics and scientific visualization techniques. CiteSpace II was used to map the intellectual structure of the research field of the Wenchuan Earthquake based on 1075 documents that appear in academic literatures on this topic between 2008 and 2012 and the co-citation maps analyzed and visualized here show the major areas of research, prominent articles, major knowledge producers and journals in the research field of the Wenchuan Earthquake.

Abstract:
Purpose Research with stem cells is a biomedical venture with great scientific impact, and whose development flows over into many other areas. This article aims to present a dual analysis of Spain's scientific output in this field during the period 1997-2007.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors used bibliometric indicators of a basic nature as well as techniques for the visualization and analysis of networks of scientific information based on a study of Key Words Plus.
Findings The output is mainly concentrated in Cataluna and Madrid, and hospitals are the most productive centres (followed by health institutes), where the main authors are affiliated. Main categories are hematology, oncology and biophysics. The outstanding areas of study revolve around the therapeutic use of transplant of hematopoietic progenitors, the processes of generation, proliferation and differentiation of lines of cells, and the study of neurosciences.
Originality/value - This study provides an overview of Spanish research involving stem cells, detecting and representing the main areas of research. The article considers the potential of Key Words Plus in combination with the proposed methodology as particularly useful for the analysis and delimitation of a scientific domain.

Abstract:
The non-technological types of innovation are neither clearly defined, nor are they differentiated from each other, from other forms of innovation, from innovation in general, and from creativity. Hence we use co-citation analysis based on bibliometrics to produce a quantitative literature review that results in identification of key areas of research within the non-technological innovation literature. It enables us to find out where the knowledge base comes from in each of the areas. By using authors as the units of analysis and incorporating all the citations that are included in the IS! Web of Science, we trace the evolution of the intellectual structure of the non-technological innovation field during the period 1975-2011.
