The report http://www.nesta.org.uk/assets/events/our_frugal_future_lessons_from_indias_innovation_system
from the UK National Endowment on Science Technology & the Arts (NESTA) provides very good background on India, research and innovation.

There is also a bibliometric report from India's government Department of Science & Technology http://www.dst.gov.in/whats_new/whats_new12/report.pdf

Both of these point to the care needed in interpretation and understanding of the current landscape and trends, when there are such massive contrasts between India and established research economies.

This is very interesting and timely regarding the massive growth of research and education in India over the last few years. But I wonder if would be possible to produce relative figures, i.e. output divided by size inidcators such as number of research FTE or turnover. As the data are now it is difficult to interpret, as it mixes up size and quality effects.

Indian Universities and their performance are mapped in the recent issue of Careers 360 - A premier career magazine. Performance of Indian universities are mapped in terms of their patenting in Indian patent office, publication count in Scopus and WoS.

Perhaps, this kind of extensive mapping has not done before. The data is available on the website. Any feedback / comments are most welcome.
