ABSTRACT: A knowledge map can be viewed as a directed graph, in
which each node is a knowledge unit (KU), and each edge is a learning-
dependency between two KUs. Understanding the topological properties of
knowledge map can help us gain better insights into human cognition
structure and its mechanism, design better knowledge map construction
algorithms, and guide learners' navigational learning through knowledge
map. In this paper, we perform topological analysis on 12 knowledge maps
from computer science, mathematics, and physics. We discover that they
exhibit small-world and scale-free properties like many other networks.
Specifically, we show the locality of learning-dependency and
hierarchical modular structure in the 12 knowledge maps. In addition, we
study how KUs affect the network efficiency by removing KUs based on
different centrality measures. We find that the importance of KUs varies
greatly. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT: Objective: To analyse the institutionalisation of
nutrition sciences in Spain in the second half of the twentieth century,
and evaluate the activities of the journal Anales de Bromatologia.

Method: Descriptive bibliometric study of the original articles. Full
names of the authors and the complete article title were recorded. Using
key words, each article was assigned by consensus of the researchers to a
single main subject in accordance with the thirteen subject areas
addressed by the Spanish Society of Bromatology in its meetings. An
analysis was conducted of the distribution and trends of general
productivity indicators and their characteristics.

Results: A total of 917 original articles were published, with a mean of
20.8 papers/year. The subjects for which the highest percentage of
articles was recorded were foreign substances in foods, foods of plant
origin and nutrition. A total of 874 authors contributed, with a
collaboration rate of 2.43 and a transience rate of 70.1%. Distribution
of the number of authors per article was close to that indicated by
Lotka's law of scientific productivity. The top twelve producers,
predominantly women, participated in 49.9% of the articles published.

Conclusion: The journal showed low productivity and was of an endogamous
nature, with a predominance of authors related to the School of
Bromatology in the Faculty of Pharmacy, at the Complutense University.
The subjects addressed reflected the demands of the nutrition transition
in Spain. Ntar Hosp 2012; 27 (Supl. 2):18-25

KEYWORDS+: CITATION; MEDLINE

ABSTRACT: Objective: To evaluate by bibliometric and thematic
analysis the scientific literature on omega-3 fatty acids indexed in
international databases on health sciences and to establish a comparative
base for future analysis.

Method: Searches were conducted with the descriptor (MeSH, as Major
Topic) "Fatty Acids, Omega-3" from the first date available until
December 31, 2010. Databases consulted: MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, IS!
Web of Knowledge, CINAHL and LILACS.

Results: The most common type of document was originals articles.
Obsolescence was set at 5 years. The geographical distribution of authors
who appear as first author was EEUU and the articles were written
predominantly in English. The study population was 90.98% (95% CI 89.25
to 92.71) adult humans. The documents were classified into 59 subject
areas and the most studied topic 16.24% (95% CI 14.4 to 18.04) associated
with omega-3, was cardiovascular disease.

Conclusion: This study indicates that the scientific literature on omega-
3 fatty acids is a full force area of knowledge. The Anglo-Saxon
institutions dominate the scientific production and it is mainly oriented
to the study of cardiovascular disease. Nutr Hosp 2012; 27 (Supl. 2):41-

ABSTRACT: This article uses the methodology developed by
Borokhovich. Bricker and Simkins (1994) to determine the relative
influence of seven prominent finance journals. The original analysis is
expanded on a longitudinal basis for the years 1990 to 2006 inclusive. It
is found that the relative influence rank produces some stable ordering
over the study period with the Journal of Finance and Journal of
Financial Economics occupying top spots. A change in the ordering of the
relative influence rank indicates a shift in inter-journal communication
trends.

Abstract:
This study presents an analysis of the use of bibliographic references by individual scientists in three different research areas. The number and type of references that scientists include in their papers are analyzed, the relationship between the number of references and different impact-based indicators is studied from a multivariable perspective, and the referencing patterns of scientists are related to individual factors such as their age and scientific performance. Our results show inter-area differences in the number, type, and age of references. Within each area, the number of references per document increases with journal *impact factor* and paper length. Top-performance scientists use in their papers a higher number of references, which are more recent and more frequently covered by the Web of Science. Veteran researchers tend to rely more on older literature and non-Web of Science sources. The longer reference lists of top scientists can be explained by their tende!
ncy to publish in high *impact factor* journals, with stricter reference and reviewing requirements. Long reference lists suggest a broader knowledge on the current literature in a field, which is important to become a top scientist. From the perspective of the handicap principle theory, the sustained use of a high number of references in an author's oeuvre is a costly behavior that may indicate a serious, comprehensive, and solid research capacity, but that only the best researchers can afford. Boosting papers' citations by artificially increasing the number of references does not seem a feasible strategy.

Abstract:
Objective: To evaluate the level of evidence published in infertility journals with the highest impact factors.
Design: Systematic review. We searched in PubMed identifying potential systematic reviews with meta-analysis (SRs) and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) between 2006 and 2010 in the five fertility journals with highest *impact factor*.
Setting: Academic institution.
Patient(s): None. Intervention(s): None.
Main Outcomes Measure(s): Number and proportion of potential SRs and RCTs published in 2006-2011, and quality assessment of real RCTs published in 2010.
Result(s): Among evaluated articles, 1.5% and 6.8% were SRs and RCTs. Fertility and Sterility has been the journal with more potential SRs and RCTs, and Human Reproduction Update was the only one with an increasing trend in the number of potential SRs (from 5.3% in 2006 to 24.4% in 2011). Among confirmed RCTs, for each quality assessment item, between 50% and 85% were classified as having low risk of bias, and the most common high risk of bias was related to allocation concealment. Only 23% had a trial registration, which were associated with higher quality assessment classifications. Only 10% of RCTs reported pharmaceutical industry funding.
Conclusion(s): This is the first study assessing the methodologic quality of publications in the top five fertility journals. More than 90% of all the publications were neither SRs nor RCTs. It is remarkable that the risk of bias was generally low. Enhancing trial registration and funding source statements represent opportunities to improve the quality of reporting. We hope this information is useful to researchers, editorial boards, and clinicians moving forward with research in our field. (Fertil Steril (R) 2012; 98: 1539-43. Abstract:
Objective: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of eating disorder journals to guide journal readers and researchers when submitting their manuscripts.
Method: Several indices were used to compare journal impact and citations of articles appearing between 1996 and 2010 in six eating disorders journals and six leading general psychiatry journals.
Results: The International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) had the highest journal *impact factor* (JIF, 2.278) of the six eating disorders' journals. The general psychiatry journals had higher JIFs and received more citations per eating disorder article than the specialized journals. However, IJED published the highest number of eating disorder articles between 1996 and 2010, and 35 of these articles received at least 100 citations.
Discussion: Using the JIF alone to decide where to submit a manuscript is a poor strategy, as this does not take into consideration the impact an article can have within the eating disorder's field over time. (c) 2012 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:
The Chronicle of Higher Education is a weekly newspaper that gathers news and academic information throughout the United States, job opportunities for university majors, and a section devoted to art and ideas. It is published in Washington D.C. It has around 64,000 subscribers and over 315,000 readers. Its daily digital version adds to the paper issue, among other things, discussion forums and several tools directed to the academia. It has over 1,9 million monthly single visits.
'What is the Future of Academic Publishing?' is the title of a recent article in its digital version, part of a series -Digital Challenges to Academic Publishing- with a total of four interviews (to date) to different editors from the editorial world. It collects an interesting conversation with the publishing director of the MIT Press regarding the question. The interviewer begins querying about the fact that some personalities throughout the U.S. encourage researchers to publish their academic works in on-line media -such as blogs- without the need for a later publication on traditional media such as a book or a printed magazine.
The reply, not easy, is perhaps mild but realistic, and could be summoned to economical aspects. As a matter of fact, if we think that publishing previously in the digital realm will imply diminishing the possible audience (instead of increasing it) the costs of producing a book, or a magazine, are unaffordable during the first two years, which is the time the publishing world foresees to retrieve investment. Although, in spite of the lack of studies providing facts -that academic publishers can't risk with their own publications- and above the incidental examples in one sense or another, it is not clear that publishing a paper in 'non classical' means can help or harm the later printed or 'classical' version. We must obviously believe the backdrop statement, which implies that the academic book or magazine, above any other means, must always generate benefits, or at least not generate losses.
Regardless of these issues, truth is that in a broad sense, the media has evolved radically in the last years and research in the fields of architectural history, critique, and theory are no exception. It is not necessary to expand on this issue, it is clear that the communication possibilities have multiplied. It can be said that these can generate a transfer of mere uncritical information and doubtful contents. Further more, we don't have to look back too far to realize that the same methods of academic research are far from the ones only ten years ago. If the rather easy access to databases, libraries, academic deposits, magazines, files or any sort of digital contents provide any researcher with an almost unlimited flow of information, furthermore "internet has set the stage for anyone to become an author being his own publisher".
Thus, there has been an exponential proliferation of non-printed media. It is enough to check the growing project 'Archizines' which selects and files magazines, newspapers and independent fanzines published throughout the world since the year 2000, being an alternative "to the establishment of architectural press". Most of them, specially the most recent ones, have a strictly digital origin against those who appear to complete a previously printed version. However, the on-line ones paradoxically maintain residues of the printed ones in their design, mainly to allow for later printing, whether it is for free or with a fee, 'self service' or 'print on-demand'.
We shall not be captivated by the phenomenon's immediacy and abundance. The atomization of messages, the need to find one's expression and become a publisher is not something new. The means that allow it are. Beatriz Colomina reminds us about the emergence of new publishing means, small independent architectural periodicals that appeared during the 60s and 70s. The apparition of new printing technologies, without the need to specialize and with a relative low cost, was crucial for everyone to be able to publish their own magazine. In the current economic context these means -low cost and accessibility- might be more important than conscious publishing decisions, but truth is that the there is a constant increase of printed magazines evolving to digital and brand new digital ones.
On the other hand, the net offers many possibilities for alternative publishing manners, such as 'bottom-up', from base to the top based on crowd sourcing where anyone can add contents overseen by a publisher. The 'academic' or 'scientific' magazine (or book) has however its own peculiarities, as well as several mechanisms to ensure the orthodoxy and quality of its contents. But this debate renders futile since nothing prevents us to resort to these mechanisms in a digital realm as it does happen. Perhaps what is arguable is measuring the quality of a magazine or books through its '*impact factor*' as done today, based on the number of times it is quoted or if it should be considered the number of downloads or visits to websites where it has been published previously or afterwards.
Back to the interview, the question about the future of academic press is answered towards the end. These "will stand as long as they are capable of providing added value to authors and readers, and have the support of institutions. Today and in the near future we will see new models for the academic press including crowd funded and sourced global schemes to develop and spread quality research throughout the whole world".
MIT Press director believes the future lies in the capability to preserve and provide a quicker and broader access to quality research and knowledge. European policies, however, are not proposing 'if' but 'how' to reach the goal of providing open and free access to the scientific information backed by public funding -specially through academic press- until 2020.
Faced by a future we cannot foretell, we must continue promoting debate and reflection, and at the same time turn to Romano Guardini, for example. In 1948 he gave a lecture published three years later. In the preface to In Praise of the Book, we read:
I had written a lot and was ready to design the discourse: back in the early post-war years good books where scarce and the ones available where weak. Today everything is different. Many good and important things are available again and we have the right to expect them to be done right. However, some have understood that having books is not something obvious; and it is enough to look towards the close East to realize how being able to freely access books is a signal for the defence of human dignity.
We thus have enough arguments to consider what we Can watch over in them and perhaps is sometimes overlooked.
(Now understand 'Book' in the broadest sense of the printed media parallel to the current media).
Well, in short, little objection can be raised to the above reflections in the interview of The Chronicle, at least with regard to the focus on the quality of any research that should include the kind of magazines we are discussing. Perhaps this is the 'added value' to be pursued, well ahead of other elements that can always be interpreted as circumstantial or changing.
And although it is true that to facilitate 'fast and widespread' access, even beyond the inner academic circles, as well as the support and collaboration between institutions are some of the characteristics of academic research, at least that of give the reader the best possible academic research in our fields of editorial interest is the firm commitment of Ra, Revista de Arquitectura, which is not exhausted in these very brief considerations or in the pages that follow.

IMPACT FACTOR

Abstract:
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Impact factors are currently the bibliometric index most used for evaluating scientific journals. However, the way in which they are used, for instance concerning the study or journal types analyzed, can markedly interfere with estimate reliability. This study aimed to analyze the citation distribution pattern in three Brazilian journals of general medicine.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a descriptive study based on numbers of citations of scientific studies published by three Brazilian journals of general medicine.
METHODS: The journals analyzed were Sao Paulo Medical Journal, Clinics and Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira. This survey used data available from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) platform, from which the total number of papers published in each journal in 2007-2008 and the number of citations of these papers in 2009 were obtained. From these data, the citation distribution was derived and journal impact factors (average number of citations) were estimated. These factors were then compared with those directly available from the ISI Journal of Citation Reports (JCR).
RESULTS: Respectively, 134, 203 and 192 papers were published by these journals during the period analyzed. The observed citation distributions were highly skewed, such that many papers had few citations and a small percentage had many citations. It was not possible to identify any specific pattern for the most cited papers or to exactly reproduce the JCR impact factors.
CONCLUSION: Use of measures like "impact factors", which characterize citations through averages, does not adequately represent the citation distribution in the journals analyzed.
