Abstract:
This study presents an analysis of the use of bibliographic references by individual scientists in three different research areas. The number and type of references that scientists include in their papers are analyzed, the relationship between the number of references and different impact-based indicators is studied from a multivariable perspective, and the referencing patterns of scientists are related to individual factors such as their age and scientific performance. Our results show inter-area differences in the number, type, and age of references. Within each area, the number of references per document increases with journal impact factor and paper length. Top-performance scientists use in their papers a higher number of references, which are more recent and more frequently covered by the Web of Science. Veteran researchers tend to rely more on older literature and non-Web of Science sources. The longer reference lists of top scientists can be explained by their tendenc!
y to publish in high impact factor journals, with stricter reference and reviewing requirements. Long reference lists suggest a broader knowledge on the current literature in a field, which is important to become a top scientist. From the perspective of the handicap principle theory, the sustained use of a high number of references in an author's oeuvre is a costly behavior that may indicate a serious, comprehensive, and solid research capacity, but that only the best researchers can afford. Boosting papers' citations by artificially increasing the number of references does not seem a feasible strategy.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To identify global research trends in three therapies for children with cerebral palsy.
DATA RETRIEVAL: We performed a bibliometric analysis of studies on therapies for children with cerebral palsy from 2002 to 2011 retrieved from Web of Science.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Inclusion criteria: (a) peer-reviewed published articles on botulinum toxin, constraint-induced movement therapy, or acupuncture for children with cerebral palsy indexed in Web of Science; (b) original research articles, reviews, meeting abstracts, proceedings papers, book chapters, editorial material, and news items; and (c) publication between 2002 and 2011. Exclusion criteria: (a) articles that required manual searching or telephone access; (b) documents that were not published in the public domain; and (c) a number of corrected papers from the total number of articles.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Number of publications on the three therapies; (2) annual publication output, distribution by journals, distribution by institution, and top-cited articles on botulinum toxin; (3) annual publication output, distribution by journal, distribution by institution, and top-cited articles on constraint-induced movement therapy; (4) annual publication, distribution by journal, distribution by institution, and top-cited articles on acupuncture.
RESULTS: This analysis, based on Web of Science articles, identified several research trends in studies published over the past 10 years of three therapies for children with cerebral palsy. More articles on botulinum toxin for treating children with cerebral palsy were published than the articles regarding constraint-induced movement therapy or acupuncture. The numbers of publications increased over the 10-year study period. Most papers appeared in journals with a focus on neurology, such as Developmental Medicine and Child Neurology and Journal of Child Neurology. Research institutes publishing on botulinum toxin treatments for this population are mostly in the Netherlands, the United States of America, and Australia; those publishing on constraint-induced movement therapy are mostly in Australia and the United States of America; and those publishing on acupuncture are mostly in China, Sweden and the United States of America.
CONCLUSION: Analysis of literature and research trends indicated that there was no one specific therapy to cure cerebral palsy. Further studies are still necessary.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study compares the articles cited in CINAHL, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS), and Google Scholar and the h-index ratings provided by Scopus, WOS, and Google Scholar.
Methods: The publications of 30 College of Nursing faculty at a large urban university were examined. Searches by author name were executed in Scopus, WOS, and POP (Publish or Perish, which searches Google Scholar), and the h-index for each author from each database was recorded. In addition, the citing articles of their published articles were imported into a bibliographic management program. This data was used to determine an aggregated h-index for each author.
Results: Scopus, WOS, and Google Scholar provided different h-index ratings for authors and each database found unique and duplicate citing references.
Conclusions: More than one tool should be used to calculate the h-index for nursing faculty because one tool alone cannot be relied on to provide a thorough assessment of a researcher's impact. If researchers are interested in a comprehensive h-index, they should aggregate the citing references located by WOS and Scopus. Because h-index rankings differ among databases, comparisons between researchers should be done only within a specified database. Cite this article: De Groote, S.L., & Raszewski, R. (2012, DECEMBER). Abstract:
In the individual assessment of a scientific performance, five scientometric indices have been used most: the h-index, the index g, the h-major index, the contemporary h-index and the normalized h-index. We propose an alternative index ("Index h-fac"), which considers positively the participation of the first author and that, by having a dynamic characteristic, continuously monitors his/her performance and is easily adaptable to particular or individual situations from different research groups. Results from the geometric mean between the original h-index as proposed by Hirsh and a correction factor ("fac", "first author commitment") and, in turn, this value is divided by the mean interval (in years) of all studies. The index emphasizes two scores (X and Y). These scores X and Y were obtained by asking to all 83 cardiovascular surgeons from Southern Brazil (Parana, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) and Specialists, how they realistically estimated, in percentage, their e!
ffective contribution in each published paper in which they appeared as first author. Of the total, 80 (96.4%) responded. The average obtained was 78.0% and on this basis, the X score was established as 0.75 and the score Y as 0.25. The new index also considers the total number of citations as first author and as co-author, the average number of coauthors per publication and the total number of papers published. Theoretical examples are presented, discussing the main advantages of application. Serial evaluations in real world situations should be instituted to confirm the diagnostic and prognostic utility of this new index.

Abstract:
Background: Health-evidence.ca is an online registry of systematic reviews evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions. Extensive searching of bibliographic databases is required to keep the registry up to date. However, search filters have been developed to assist in searching the extensive amount of published literature indexed. Search filters can be designed to find literature related to a certain subject (i.e. content-specific filter) or particular study designs (i.e. methodological filter). The objective of this paper is to describe the development and validation of the health-evidence.ca Systematic Review search filter and to compare its performance to other available systematic review filters.
Methods: This analysis of search filters was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL. The performance of thirty-one search filters in total was assessed. A validation data set of 219 articles indexed between January 2004 and December 2005 was used to evaluate performance on sensitivity, specificity, precision and the number needed to read for each filter.
Results: Nineteen of 31 search filters were effective in retrieving a high level of relevant articles (sensitivity scores greater than 85%). The majority achieved a high degree of sensitivity at the expense of precision and yielded large result sets. The main advantage of the health-evidence.ca Systematic Review search filter in comparison to the other filters was that it maintained the same level of sensitivity while reducing the number of articles that needed to be screened.
Conclusions: The health-evidence.ca Systematic Review search filter is a useful tool for identifying published systematic reviews, with further screening to identify those evaluating the effectiveness of public health interventions. The filter that narrows the focus saves considerable time and resources during updates of this online resource, without sacrificing sensitivity.

Abstract:
This article revisits earlier proposals that language learning is, in essence, the learning of formulaic sequences and their interpretations; that this occurs at all levels of granularity from large to small; and that the language system emerges from the statistical abstraction of patterns latent within and across form and function in language usage. It considers recent research in individual differences, the psycholinguistics of language processing, and longitudinal studies of first (L1) and second (L2) language acquisition. The first section reviews studies of individual differences in phonological short-term memory (PSTM) and working memory (WM) and their correlations with vocabulary and grammar acquisition in L2. The second section summarizes evidence that language processing is sensitive to the statistical properties of formulaic language in terms of frequency and transitional probability. The third section examines the definition of formulas and formulaicity using diff!
erent statistical metrics. The fourth section evaluates longitudinal research in L1 and L2 into the putative developmental sequence commonly proposed in usage-based approaches, from formula to low-scope pattern to creative construction. The final section weighs the implications of the statistical distributions of formulaicity in usage for developmental sequences of language acquisition. Zipf's law and the "phrasal teddy bear" explain the paradox whereby formulas seed language acquisition and yet learner language is formula-light in comparison to native norms.

Abstract:
CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Impact factors are currently the bibliometric index most used for evaluating scientific journals. However, the way in which they are used, for instance concerning the study or journal types analyzed, can markedly interfere with estimate reliability. This study aimed to analyze the citation distribution pattern in three Brazilian journals of general medicine.
DESIGN AND SETTING: This was a descriptive study based on numbers of citations of scientific studies published by three Brazilian journals of general medicine.
METHODS: The journals analyzed were Sao Paulo Medical Journal, Clinics and Revista da Associacao Medica Brasileira. This survey used data available from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) platform, from which the total number of papers published in each journal in 2007-2008 and the number of citations of these papers in 2009 were obtained. From these data, the citation distribution was derived and journal impact factors (average number of citations) were estimated. These factors were then compared with those directly available from the ISI Journal of Citation Reports (JCR).
RESULTS: Respectively, 134, 203 and 192 papers were published by these journals during the period analyzed. The observed citation distributions were highly skewed, such that many papers had few citations and a small percentage had many citations. It was not possible to identify any specific pattern for the most cited papers or to exactly reproduce the JCR impact factors.
CONCLUSION: Use of measures like "impact factors", which characterize citations through averages, does not adequately represent the citation distribution in the journals analyzed.

Abstract:
A number of liaison librarians were closely engaged with the UK's Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in 2008 and found this an important new direction in which to develop. Susan Ashworth had responsibility for the team within Research and Learning Support Services at the University of Glasgow Library, which worked on the Glasgow University submission and had the job of checking for accuracy the outputs of all research-active academic staff. She describes the stresses and strains of the exercise, as well as its satisfactions, and suggests that liaison and other librarians can have a significant role to play, not only in ensuring the accuracy of the bibliographic input but also in resolving the many queries and difficulties which arise during the RAE process.

Abstract:
Impact and visibility of Revista Chilena de Cirugia after its indexing on SciELO and ISI databases. Bibliometric analysis
Aim: To characterize the international visibility and impact of Revista Chilena de Cirugia (RCC) after its indexing on SciELO (2006) and ISI (2009) databases. Methods: Search on WOK platform of Thomson-Reuters for IST citations to RCC articles in the pre-indexing (1992-2005), SciELO indexing (2006-2008) and ISI indexing (2009-2011) periods. Analyzed variables were: total number and anual average of cites to RCC, RCC articles cited and ISI citer articles to RCC; authors, journals and institutions who cite RCC and its international or national origin, and triennial cites. Results: Anual average of ISI cites for pre-indexing, SciELO indexing and ISI indexing periods were 16.9; 58.3 y 164.7, respectively; meanwhile the international origin of articles that cite RCC in the authors-institutions/publication level for each period were 8.6%/32.4%; 8.5%/38.3%; and 25.8%/33.6%, respectively; triennial cites for each period were 3, 12 and 34. Publications with more cites to RCC were Rev!
Med Chile, RCC, World J Surg and Cir Esp, meanwhile in authors-institutions level we saw a concentration on Universidad de Chile, Pontificia Universidad Catolica and Universidad de La Frontera. Conclusion: SciELO and ISI indexing has brougth an increase of its impact (cites) and international visibility, although it persists a strong endogamic citation pattern that should be fixed in order to achieve a good international level

Abstract:
Objective: To conduct a bibliometric analysis of eating disorder journals to guide journal readers and researchers when submitting their manuscripts.
Method: Several indices were used to compare journal impact and citations of articles appearing between 1996 and 2010 in six eating disorders journals and six leading general psychiatry journals.
Results: The International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) had the highest journal impact factor (JIF, 2.278) of the six eating disorders' journals. The general psychiatry journals had higher JIFs and received more citations per eating disorder article than the specialized journals. However, IJED published the highest number of eating disorder articles between 1996 and 2010, and 35 of these articles received at least 100 citations.
Discussion: Using the JIF alone to decide where to submit a manuscript is a poor strategy, as this does not take into consideration the impact an article can have within the eating disorder's field over time. (c) 2012 by Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:
We propose a family of Markov chain-based models for the link analysis of scientific publications. The PageRank-style model and the dummy paper model discussed in [Electron. Trans. Numer. Anal., 33 (2008), pp. 1-16] can be obtained by a particular choice of its parameters. Since scientific publications can be ordered by the date of publication it is natural to assume a triangular structure for the adjacency matrix of the citation graph. This greatly simplifies the updating of the ranking vector if new papers are added to the database. In addition by assuming that the citation graph can be modeled as a fixed degree sequence random graph we can obtain an explicit estimation of the behavior of the entries of the ranking vector.

Abstract:
The absence of books and book chapters in the Web of Science Citation Indexes (SCI, SSCI and A& HCI) has always been considered an important flaw but the Thomson Reuters ` Book Citation Index' database was finally available in October of 2010 indexing 29,618 books and 379,082 book chapters. The Book Citation Index opens a new window of opportunities for analyzing Humanities and Social Sciences from a bibliometric point of view. The main objective of this article is to analyze different impact indicators referred to the scientific publishers included in the Book Citation Index for the Social Sciences and Humanities fields during 2006-2011. This way we construct what we have called the ` Book Publishers Citation Reports'. For this, we present a total of 19 rankings according to the different disciplines in Humanities & Arts and Social Sciences & Law with six indicators for scientific publishers.

Abstract:
This chapter details the various methods of evaluating the impact of published research, with a particular focus on citations. The chapter gives an overview of the difficulties of measuring research impact and the solutions and controversies of citation analysis, then goes on to look at the indices that record citations between articles and the metrics that these data feed into. Also discussed are publishers' approaches to improving journal impact, various recent developments in citation analysis, such as the influences of early view and open access, and author metrics.
