Abstract:
Based on the concept that scientific research is an important component of a country's knowledge-based economy, this study aims to answer the question "Are CIVETS the next BRICs" by comparing a series of *scientometrics* indicators using data from the Essential Science Indicators database and the World Bank Report 2009. The main findings are that at the country group level, there is no significant difference between CIVETS and BRICs in knowledge-based economy performance, scientific research quality and scientific research structure and that the number of scientific research papers is the clear gap between them. The results may be of use to find the answer to the question "Are CIVETS the next BRICs" at least from the perspective of *scientometrics*.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to map the intellectual structure of research in doctoral dissertations of Library and Information Science in China. By use of Co-word analysis, including cluster analysis, strategic diagram and social network analysis, we studied the internal and external structure and relationship of research fields in doctoral dissertations of Library and Information Science in China. Data was collected, during the period of 1994-2011, from six public dissertation databases and ten degree databases provided by the universities/institutes which have been authorized to grant doctoral degrees of Library and Information Science in China. The results show that Wuhan University is the most important institution of doctoral education in LIS in China. The focuses of researches, including information resource, ontology, semantic web, semantic search, electronic government, information resource management, knowledge management, knowledge innovation, knowledge sharing, knowl!
edge organization, network, information service, information need and digital library. The research fields of LIS doctoral dissertations in China are varied. Many of these research fields are still immature; accordingly, the well-developed and core research fields are fewer.

Abstract:
Purpose: To provide up-to-date bibliometric reference data describing the output and success of psychology researchers in the German-speaking countries, including lifetime publication and citation numbers, and to investigate associations of bibliometric measures with academic status and gender as well as the department characteristics of size and quota of senior researchers. Method Queried literature databases using an extensive online register of academic psychologists in the German-speaking countries, obtaining valid data for 85 % (N = 1742) of the population of interest. Findings Skewed distributions for publications and citations; maximum number of German-language (=native) publications much higher than maximum number of English-language publications; relatively large part of population publishing almost exclusively in German; publication count predictable by academic status, gender, department size, and quota of senior researchers; citation count predictable by publicat!
ion count, status, department size, and quota of senior researchers; department characteristics interact with individual characteristics to produce specific conditions under which publication count and citation count are higher or lower than expected: combination of female gender, small department size and large quota of senior researchers is associated with particularly increased publication count; female gender and large department size are associated with decreased publication count; high publication count, large department size and low quota of senior researchers are associated with increased citation count; low publication count and large quota of senior researchers are associated with decreased citation count. Conclusions Reference values for scientific output provided in this study provide an anchor for monitoring and international comparison; despite considerable noise in data, we show that interactions of individual and organizational characteristics are relevant f!
or scientific success and should be investigated further, e.g.!
  by adop
ting various measures of organizational diversity and tracing a population longitudinally.

Abstract:
How scientific progress functions in detail and what the specific prerequisites for scientific breakthroughs in a given research area are, is still unclear today. According to philosopher of science Thomas S. Kuhn, scientific advancement takes place via paradigm shift. As a principle supplementing Kuhn's theory, we proposed the Anna Karenina principle: a new paradigm can be successful only when several key prerequisites are fulfilled (e.g., verified by means of independent data and methods). If any one of these prerequisites is not fulfilled, the paradigm will not be successful. Aiming at investigating the schema of paradigm shift supplemented by the Anna Karenina principle with the aid of concrete examples from science, in this study we analyze one of the most important scientific revolutions: the shift from a fixed to a mobile worldview in geoscientific thinking. This paradigm shift will be explained based on key papers that played a decisive role, selected carefully from !
reviews in the literature. The account of the development will be complemented by empirical findings that were produced based on publication and citation data using the software Histcite.

Abstract:
Science is principally driven by the efforts of a vanishingly small fraction of researchers publishing the majority of scientific research and garnering the majority of citations. Despite this well-established trend, knowledge of exactly how many articles these researchers publish, how highly they are cited, and how they achieved their distinctive accomplishments is meager. This article examines the publication and citation patterns of the world's most highly cited environmental scientists and ecologists, inquiring into their levels of scientific productivity and visibility, examining relationships between scientific productivity and quality within their research programs, and considering how different publication strategies contribute to these distinctive successes. Generally speaking, highly cited researchers are also highly productive, publishing on average well over 100 articles each. Furthermore, articles published by this group are more highly cited on average than art!
icles published in premier generalist journal like Nature and Science, and their citation to publication ratios are more equitably distributed than is typical. Research specialization and primacy of authorship are important determinants of citation frequency, while geographic differences and collaborative propensity matter less. The article closes with a set of suggestions for those wishing to increase the use of their research by the scientific community.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to explore a bibliometric approach to quantitatively assess current research trends in cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for small cell lung cancer (SCLC), using related literature in the Science Citation Index Expanded database from 1992 to 2011. Articles were analyzed by the scientific output and research performances of countries and institutions. The distribution of key words in the article title and author-selected keywords were used to evaluate research trends. It was observed that the number of articles devoted to cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC did not increase with time. The USA and Japan were the top two countries with the highest number of articles devoted to cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC. In both countries, the number of articles did not increase with time, and a decreasing trend was identified in the USA over the last 10 years. This study demonstrates trends in cisplatin-containing chemotherapy for SCLC. The clini!
cal application of novel drugs is required for successful SCLC treatment.

Abstract:
Background: In searches for clinical trials and systematic reviews, it is said that Google Scholar (GS) should never be used in isolation, but in addition to PubMed, Cochrane, and other trusted sources of information. We therefore performed a study to assess the coverage of GS specifically for the studies included in systematic reviews and evaluate if GS was sensitive enough to be used alone for systematic reviews.
Methods: All the original studies included in 29 systematic reviews published in the Cochrane Database Syst Rev or in the JAMA in 2009 were gathered in a gold standard database. GS was searched for all these studies one by one to assess the percentage of studies which could have been identified by searching only GS.
Results: All the 738 original studies included in the gold standard database were retrieved in GS (100%).
Conclusion: The coverage of GS for the studies included in the systematic reviews is 100%. If the authors of the 29 systematic reviews had used only GS, no reference would have been missed. With some improvement in the research options, to increase its precision, GS could become the leading *bibliographic* database in medicine and could be used alone for systematic reviews.

Abstract:
To reflect further on 20 years of the journal, we present a lexicographic and bibliometric study of all papers published in Public Understanding of Science (PUS). Lexicographical analysis of the vocabulary of 465 abstracts shows five classes of associated concepts in two periods, 1992-2001 and 2002-2010. The concern for public attitudes and mass media coverage remains on the card; while language has shifted from 'public understanding' to 'public engagement' and environmental concerns have waned then waxed. The bibliometric analysis traces the position of PUS in the inter-citation network of 165 related journals (ISI Web of Science citation database), grouped into 10 disciplines for the purpose of this analysis. Indicators derived from network logic show that the established position of PUS has been stable since 1997. PUS serves a varied brokerage role as gatekeeper into and liaison maker between disciplines. Its inter-citation network position allows PUS to perform inter-dis!
ciplinary boundary spanning work that offers a safe space for experimentation with ideas.

Abstract:
Rankings based on counts are often presented to identify popular items, such as baby names, English words, or Web sites. This article shows that, in some examples, the, number of correctly identified items can be very small. We introduce a standard error versus rank plot to diagnose possible misrankings. Then to explain the slowly growing number of correct ranks, we model the entire set of count data via a *Zipf-Poisson* ensemble with independent Xi similar to Poi(Ni-alpha) for alpha > 1 and N > 0 and integers i >= 1. We show that as N -> infinity, the first n'(N) random variables have their proper order X-1 > X-2 > ... > X-n', relative to each other, with probability tending to 1 for n' up to (AN/log(N))(1/(alpha+2)) for A = alpha(2)(alpha + 2)/4. We also show, that the rate N1(alpha+2) cannot be achieved. The ordering of the first n'(N) entities does not preclude X-m > X-n', for some interloping m > n'. However, we show that the first n '' random variables are correctly orde!
red exclusive of any interlopers, with probability tending to 1 if n '' <= (BN/log(N))(1+(alpha+2)) for any B < A. We also show how to compute the cutoff for alternative models such as a *Zipf-Mandelbrot-Poisson* ensemble.

Abstract:
A thorough search of the literature to find the best evidence is central to the practice of evidence-based veterinary medicine. This requires knowing which databases to search to maximize journal coverage. The aim of the present study was to compare the coverage of active veterinary journals by nine *bibliographic* databases to inform future systematic reviews and other evidence-based searches. Coverage was assessed using lists of included journals produced by the database providers. For 121 active veterinary journals in the "Basic List of Veterinary Medical Serials, Third Edition," the percentage coverage was the highest for Scopus (98.3%) and CAB Abstracts (97.5%). For an extensive list of 1,139 journals with significant veterinary content compiled from a variety of sources, coverage was much greater in CAB Abstracts (90.2%) than in any other database, the next highest coverage being in Scopus (58.3%). The maximum coverage of the extensive journal list that could be obtained in a search without including CAB Abstracts was 69.8%. It was concluded that to maximize journal coverage and avoid missing potentially relevant evidence, CAB Abstracts should be included in any veterinary literature search.

Abstract:
The aim of the study is to test a methodology to investigate the correlation between the models of electronic information usage and the scientific communication preferences reflected in two databases: Web of Science (WoS) from Thomson Reuters, and Scopus from Elsevier. The study is focused on the University of Vigo. Downloads of the articles distributed by ScienceDirect, SpringerLink and Wiley were analyzed at the University of Vigo (Spain) in the period 2006 to 2011. There is an ascending curve for the consumption of electronic scientific content and a preference for titles distributed by ScienceDirect. The study confirms that experimental and health sciences researchers are the most devoted users, to judge by the number of articles downloaded. Increase in scientific production was also analyzed by discipline. There was a direct correlation between the most productive disciplines and those in which higher numbers of journal articles were downloaded. Nevertheless, no direct !
correlation was observed between the titles preferred for scientific communication and the titles receiving greater use in the multidisciplinary platforms studied.

Abstract:
In the present paper we attempted to generate a parametric model for word frequencies. In order to make this relation applicable, we arranged word lengths in accordance with their normalized frequencies. The pattern of occurrence of words containing different numbers of letters has been investigated on the basis of their *Zipf*'s order and by applying power law for *Zipf*'s order and frequencies. The applicability of the generated mathematical model for word length frequencies was verified for different texts. We also resolved the problem of establishing a relationship between word frequencies of higher *Zipf*'s order with text length.

Abstract:
The present article deals with the issue of the quality of academic journals. After we have analyzed the current situation of the problems, we propose some solutions. Academic journals should try to attract the best articles by making an arrangement in advance with the writer or by contributions solicitation. At the same time, the amount of subscription should be enlarged and the academic quality of the editorial team should be improved. It is also important for striving for more financial support. We conclude that the coordination of the different aspects involved is the key to the improvement of the quality of academic journals.

Abstract:
Purpose Research with stem cells is a biomedical venture with great scientific impact, and whose development flows over into many other areas. This article aims to present a dual analysis of Spain's scientific output in this field during the period 1997-2007.
Design/methodology/approach - The authors used bibliometric indicators of a basic nature as well as techniques for the visualization and analysis of networks of scientific information based on a study of Key Words Plus.
Findings The output is mainly concentrated in Cataluna and Madrid, and hospitals are the most productive centres (followed by health institutes), where the main authors are affiliated. Main categories are hematology, oncology and biophysics. The outstanding areas of study revolve around the therapeutic use of transplant of hematopoietic progenitors, the processes of generation, proliferation and differentiation of lines of cells, and the study of neurosciences.
Originality/value - This study provides an overview of Spanish research involving stem cells, detecting and representing the main areas of research. The article considers the potential of Key Words Plus in combination with the proposed methodology as particularly useful for the analysis and delimitation of a scientific domain.

Abstract:
Purpose - The increasing availability of digital editions of journals, and/or the incorporation of the full-text versions of their papers in the largest aggregator databases, have been the highlights in the coming of age of digital libraries from many perspectives, ranging from collection development to preservation, from ready reference services to creating digital carrels. Full-text availability of research papers through several digital resources is not merely a great convenience for distributing knowledge, but also an indirect indicator of the acknowledgement of the popularity and importance of journals and other serial publications (such as conference proceedings) in many disciplines where such sources are the primary venues for scholarly and professional publishing. One of the purposes of the author's current research project was to find out how well three business databases reflect the popularity and familiarity of peer ranking and rating through 50 top rated marketin!
g-focused and marketing-related periodicals in the full-text coverage of those journals. This paper seeks to present some results.
Design/methodology/approach - The target journals were selected from the list of 50 marketing-focused and marketing-related journals ranked by nearly 630 faculty members from marketing departments of US and international universities in an outstanding large scale survey and research project by Hult et al. The presence and time-span of coverage of 50 journals and conference proceedings was analysed in three of the largest (partially) full-text business databases.
Findings - The research found that many highly rated and ranked journals in the sample were absent or very modestly present in the full-text subset even in the largest and most widely licensed three business databases tested.
Originality/value - The research adds a new dimension to evaluating databases by the specific criteria of full text availability of journals and other serial publications.
