Abstract:
Neuroscience research in India has been mapped for the years 1992-2005
using Neuroscience Citation Index (NSCI) and PubMed. A total of 18, 138
papers, with 1.31 times citations, have been published in 1975 journals
from 47 different countries. Fourteen out of the top 18 productive
journals are from India; of which only 6 have *Impact Factor* 2009
(IF-2009). Interestingly, only 4 out of the 25 highly cited journals are
Indian. And 322 papers have appeared in 28 Letters and Communication
journals. The dataset has been found to be a perfect fit for the
Bradford law of scattering - both verbal and graphical formulations of
the law. About 20% of the papers are published in journals which are
having no IF, and 61% papers in journals having IF < 3. However, only
128 papers are published in journals having IF > 10, out of which 15
papers have not been cited at all. Papers have authors from 1401 Indian
institutions; but only 9.2% institutions contribute 80.1% papers. Also,
papers are authored by 1 to 27 authors; multi-author papers are better
cited. Collaborations have been studied for papers indexed in NSCI only
and not PubMed. Indian authors have international collaborations in only
12% papers indexed in NSCI with authors from 75 different countries -
predominantly G7 nations and the internationalization index is 16.14.
More than 70% papers have not been cited at all and those published in
1998 have been better cited. Papers drew maximum citations 4-5 years
after publication. Papers having international collaborations are cited
more often.

Abstract:
Objective: Verify whether a journal's *impact factor* is a mechanism
that modifies the ethical requirements described in the instructions
provided to authors of articles published in Brazilian medical journals.
Methods: 48 selected journals were divided into two groups:
*impact-factor* (n = 24), and no-*impact-factor* (n = 24). The number of
ethical requirements was compared between both groups based on a
specific research protocol, ranging from zero to six points, analyzing
the presence of an approval by a research ethics committee; reference to
the fact that the research follows the precepts of the Declaration of
Helsinki and the rules of Resolution 196/96; use of an informed consent;
information about the authors' conflicts of interest; and a request for
registration of clinical trials in the Brazilian Clinical Trials
Registry.
Results: The average score of the *impact-factor* group was
significantly higher than that of the no-*impact-factor* group (3.12 +/-
1.03 vs. 2.08 +/- 1.64, p = 0.0121). When each ethical requirement was
compared between the groups, there was significant difference only
between the requirement of an informed consent and the disclosure of
conflicts of interest (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The *impact factor* is a determinant factor on the ethics
included in the instructions to authors of articles in scientific
journals, showing that higher-quality journals seek better-designed
articles that are conscientious at the beginning of the research. (C)

Abstract:
Since the 1990s, with the heightened competition and the strong growth
of the international higher education market, an increasing number of
rankings have been created that measure the scientific performance of an
institution based on data. The Leiden Ranking 2011/2012 (LR) was
published early in 2012. Starting from Goldstein and Spiegelhalter's
(1996) recommendations for conducting quantitative comparisons among
institutions, in this study we undertook a reformulation of the LR by
means of multilevel regression models. First, with our models we
replicated the ranking results; second, the reanalysis of the LR data
showed that only 5% of the PPtop10% total variation is attributable to
differences between universities. Beyond that, about 80% of the
variation between universities can be explained by differences among
countries. If covariates are included in the model the differences among
most of the universities become meaningless. Our findings have
implications for conducting university rankings in general and for the
LR in particular. For example, with Goldstein-adjusted confidence
intervals, it is possible to interpret the significance of differences
among universities meaningfully: Rank differences among universities
should be interpreted as meaningful only if their confidence intervals
do not overlap.

Abstract:
This study applied text mining methods to examine the abstracts of 2,997
international research articles published between 2000 and 2010 by six
journals included in the Social Science Citation Index in the field of
Educational Technology (EDTECH). A total of 19 clusters of research
areas were identified, and these clusters were further analyzed in terms
of productivity by country and by journal. The analysis revealed
research areas with rising trends, stable status, and low attention.
This study also identified areas of research emphasis by journal and
research strength by country. A discussion of results through the lens
of Critical Theory of Technology is also included. The authors hope to
inform the EDTECH community about the trends of EDTECH research on
topics and regions of research contributions. The authors also believe
that such examination of trends can help facilitate fruitful discussions
of directions for future research, and possible international
collaboration across various geographical regions.

Abstract:
This paper correlates the peer evaluations performed in late 2009 by the
disciplinary committees of CNPq (a Brazilian funding agency) with some
standard bibliometric measures for 55 scientific areas. We compared the
decisions to increase, maintain or decrease a scientist's research
scholarship funded by CNPq. We analyzed these decisions for 2,663
Brazilian scientists and computed their correlations (Spearman rho) with
21 different measures, among them: total production, production in the
last 5 years, production indexed in Web of Science and Scopus, total
citations received (according to WOS, Scopus, and Google Scholar),
h-index and m-quotient (according to the three citation services). The
highest correlations for each area range from 0.95 to 0.29, although
there are areas with no significantly positive correlation with any of
the metrics.

Abstract:
This study examines the citations used in the global branding literature
(GBL), and evaluates the knowledge structure of this area of research to
date. Our bibliometric analysis involves an examination of 120 global
branding articles in business-related research. We employ
multidimensional scaling to reveal a range of intellectual influences
that have helped shape the GBL. The foundation of knowledge in the GBL
is uncovered by analyzing co-citation data to identify important topical
influences in the formation of global branding research. The conceptual
framework developed incorporates five areas with important implications
for the future development of global branding as an area of inquiry.
These major research topics in the GBL are international branding
strategy, brand positioning, brand/country origin, brand concept-image,
and brand performance. We leverage resource- and capability-based
paradigms, and use the five underpinning knowledge groups to propose an
agenda for future research that fills existing gaps and offers the
potential to advance and enrich the GBL.

Two simple new *bibliometric* indexes to better evaluate research in disciplines where publications typically receive less *citations*

Abstract:
The paper proposes two simple new indexes-k and w-to assess a
scientist's publications record based on citations. The two indexes are
superior to the widely used h index (Hirsch, 2005), as they preserve all
its valuable characteristics and try to overcome one of its
shortcomings, i.e. that it uses only a fraction of the information
contained in a scientist's citations profile and, as a result, it is
defined over the set of positive integers and does not show a
sufficiently fine 'granularity' to allow a fully satisfactory ranking of
scientists. This problem is particularly acute in many areas of Social
Sciences and Humanities, where scientific productivity and citation
practices typically yield fewer citations per paper and, as a
consequence, are characterized by 'structurally' lower values of the h
index. Both the indexes proposed are defined over R+, their integer part
is equal to the scientist's h index and they fall in the right-open
interval [h, h+1). While the h index is influenced only by part of the
citations received by a scientist's most-cited publications, the k index
takes into account all the citations received by her most-cited
publications and the w index accounts for the citations received by the
entire set of her publications. Variants of the k and w indexes are
proposed which consider co-authorship. To show the extent to which the h
index and the new indexes proposed may yield different results, they are
calculated for 332 professors of economics in Italian universities and
the results obtained used to rank Italian university departments.

Abstract:
This article provides an overview of studies that have used citation
analysis in the field of humanities in the period 1951 to 2010. The work
is based on an exhaustive search in databasesparticularly those in
library and information scienceand on citation chaining from papers on
citation analysis. The results confirm that use of this technique in the
humanities is limited, and although there was some growth in the 1970s
and 1980s, it has stagnated in the past 2 decades. Most of the work has
been done by research staff, but almost one third involves library
staff, and 15% has been done by students. The study also showed that
less than one fourth of the works used a citation database such as the
Arts & Humanities Citation Index and that 21% of the works were in
publications other than library and information science journals. The
United States has the greatest output, and English is by far the most
frequently used language, and 13.9% of the studies are in other
languages.

Abstract:
The economic and social importance of theautomotive industry explains
the need for researching improved ways oforganising andmanaging the
diverse processes involved in the production ofmotor vehicles.
Furthermore, the management of supply chains and
inter-organisationalrelations has acquired strategic significance in
recent years and has become akey area of research. At the
interfacebetween these two fields, this paper adopts a bibliometric
viewpoint to analyse the scholarly literature that has addressedthe
study ofsupply chains within the specific sphere of the
automotiveindustry. To do so, it has examined the 404 papers on this
topic indexedthrough to 2011 in the Business Source Complete database.
This has allowedidentifying trends and opportunities related to the
what, how and where of research into this matter.

Abstract:
Background: The peer review system has been traditionally challenged due
to its many limitations especially for allocating funding. Bibliometric
indicators may well present themselves as a complement.
Objective: We analyze the relationship between peers' ratings and
bibliometric indicators for Spanish researchers in the 2007 National R&D
Plan for 23 research fields.
Methods and Materials: We analyze peers' ratings for 2333 applications.
We also gathered principal investigators' research output and impact and
studied the differences between accepted and rejected applications. We
used the Web of Science database and focused on the 2002-2006 period.
First, we analyzed the distribution of granted and rejected proposals
considering a given set of bibliometric indicators to test if there are
significant differences. Then, we applied a multiple logistic regression
analysis to determine if bibliometric indicators can explain by
themselves the concession of grant proposals.
Results: 63.4% of the applications were funded. Bibliometric indicators
for accepted proposals showed a better previous performance than for
those rejected; however the correlation between peer review and
bibliometric indicators is very heterogeneous among most areas. The
logistic regression analysis showed that the main bibliometric
indicators that explain the granting of research proposals in most cases
are the output (number of published articles) and the number of papers
published in journals that belong to the first quartile ranking of the
Journal Citations Report.
Discussion: Bibliometric indicators predict the concession of grant
proposals at least as well as peer ratings. Social Sciences and
Education are the only areas where no relation was found, although this
may be due to the limitations of the Web of Science's coverage. These
findings encourage the use of bibliometric indicators as a complement to
peer review in most of the analyzed areas.

*Bibliometric* Evidence for a Hierarchy of the Sciences

Abstract:
The hypothesis of a Hierarchy of the Sciences, first formulated in the
19th century, predicts that, moving from simple and general phenomena
(e. g. particle dynamics) to complex and particular (e. g. human
behaviour), researchers lose ability to reach theoretical and
methodological consensus. This hypothesis places each field of research
along a continuum of complexity and "softness", with profound
implications for our understanding of scientific knowledge. Today,
however, the idea is still unproven and philosophically overlooked, too
often confused with simplistic dichotomies that contrast natural and
social sciences, or science and the humanities. Empirical tests of the
hypothesis have usually compared few fields and this, combined with
other limitations, makes their results contradictory and inconclusive.
We verified whether discipline characteristics reflect a hierarchy, a
dichotomy or neither, by sampling nearly 29,000 papers published
contemporaneously in 12 disciplines and measuring a set of parameters
hypothesised to reflect theoretical and methodological consensus. The
biological sciences had in most cases intermediate values between the
physical and the social, with bio-molecular disciplines appearing harder
than zoology, botany or ecology. In multivariable analyses, most of
these parameters were independent predictors of the hierarchy, even when
mathematics and the humanities were included. These results support a
"gradualist" view of scientific knowledge, suggesting that the Hierarchy
of the Sciences provides the best rational framework to understand
disciplines' diversity. A deeper grasp of the relationship between
subject matter's complexity and consensus could have profound
implications for how we interpret, publish, popularize and administer
scientific research.

Abstract:
Objective: Verify whether a journal's impact factor is a mechanism that
modifies the ethical requirements described in the instructions provided
to authors of articles published in Brazilian medical journals.
Methods: 48 selected journals were divided into two groups:
impact-factor (n = 24), and no-impact-factor (n = 24). The number of
ethical requirements was compared between both groups based on a
specific research protocol, ranging from zero to six points, analyzing
the presence of an approval by a research ethics committee; reference to
the fact that the research follows the precepts of the Declaration of
Helsinki and the rules of Resolution 196/96; use of an informed consent;
information about the authors' conflicts of interest; and a request for
registration of clinical trials in the Brazilian Clinical Trials
Registry.
Results: The average score of the impact-factor group was significantly
higher than that of the no-impact-factor group (3.12 +/- 1.03 vs. 2.08
+/- 1.64, p = 0.0121). When each ethical requirement was compared
between the groups, there was significant difference only between the
requirement of an informed consent and the disclosure of conflicts of
interest (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The impact factor is a determinant factor on the ethics
included in the instructions to authors of articles in scientific
journals, showing that higher-quality journals seek better-designed
articles that are conscientious at the beginning of the research. (C)

Abstract:
This study uses the method of citation context analysis to compare
differences in citation contexts, including cited concepts and citation
functions, between natural sciences (NS) and social sciences and
humanities (SSH), based on articles citing Little Science, Big Science
(LSBS) published between 1963 and 2010. The findings indicate that NS
and SSH researchers frequently cite LSBS as a source that is related to
a specific topic and as evidence to support a claim. No significant
differences were identified in the distribution of cited concepts
included in LSBS, but significant differences were observed in the
reasons for citing LSBS between NS and SSH citing articles. However,
reverse trends were observed in the percentage of some cited concepts
and citation functions between NS and SSH, which implies that subtle
differences in citation behavior exist between NS and SSH researchers.
In addition, each concept category has a different half-life. Concepts
related to characteristics of big science and scientific collaboration
have the longest half-lives.

Abstract:
Introduction: Systematic reviews are an important knowledge synthesis
tool for critical care medicine clinicians and researchers. With new
literature available each day, reviewers must balance identifying all
relevant literature against timely synthesis. We therefore sought to
apply capture-mark-recapture, a novel methodology, to estimate the
population of articles available for a systematic review of effective
patient rounding practices in critical care medicine.
Methods: Capture-mark-recapture was applied retrospectively to estimate
the population of articles available for a systematic review of 4
bibliographic databases. All research studies (no methodology
restrictions) of patient rounding practices in critical care medicine
were included. Estimates of article population size were calculated for
search of the bibliographic databases, selection of articles for
full-text review, and selection of articles for inclusion in the
systematic review.
Results: Capture-mark-recapture estimated a population of 28 839
articles (95% confidence interval [CI], 12 393-70 990) for search of the
bibliographic databases, 169 articles (95% CI, 152-202) for full-text
review, and 48 articles (95% CI, 39-131) for inclusion in the systematic
review. These estimates suggest that our search identified 15% (4462/28
839) of the population of potentially available articles for the search
of the bibliographic databases, 79% (133/169) of articles for full-text
review, and 79% (38/48) of articles for inclusion in the systematic
review.
Conclusions: The capture-mark-recapture technique can be applied to
systematic reviews in critical care medicine with heterogeneous study
methodologies to estimate the population of articles available.
Capture-mark-recapture may help clinicians who use systematic reviews to
estimate search completeness and researchers who perform systematic
reviews to develop more efficient literature search strategies. (c) 2013

Abstract:
We describe mathematically the age-independent version of the h-index,
defined by Abt (Scientometrics 91(3):863-868, 2012) and explain when
this indicator is constant with age. We compare this index with the one
where not the h-index is divided by career length but where all citation
numbers are divided by career length and where we then calculate the new
h-index. Both mathematical models are compared. A variant of this second
method is by calculating the h-index of the citation data, divided by
article age. Examples are given.

Abstract:
Big Science accelerator complexes are no longer mere tools for nuclear
and particle physics, but modern-day experimental resources for a wide
range of natural sciences and often named instrumental to scientific and
technological development for innovation and economic growth. Facilities
compete on a global market to attract the best users and facilitate the
best science, and advertise the achievement of their users as markers of
quality and productivity. Thus a need has risen for (quantitative)
quality assessment of science on the level of facilities. In this
article, we examine some quantitative performance measurements
frequently used by facilities to display quality: technical reliability,
competition for access, and publication records. We report data from the
world's three largest synchrotron radiation facilities from the years
2004-2010, and discuss their meaning and significance by placing them in
proper context. While we argue that quality is not possible to
completely capture in these quantitative metrics, we acknowledge their
apparent importance and, hence, we introduce and propose facilitymetrics
as a new feature of the study of modern big science, and as a new
empirical focus for scientometrical study, in the hope that future
studies can contribute to a deeper, much-needed analysis of the topic.

Abstract:
The h-index concept has been analysed in aspects of a contemporary
tendency of parameterisation of everything and as the potential measure
of the knowledge progress, which recognises individuals, institutions
and Engineering sub-disciplines that best generate new knowledge.
Considerations have been presented at the level of universality of
knowledge which implies permanent progress and on the base of careful
thoughts of the domestic experience. The h-nature of things has been
described, and several axiomatic characterisations of the Hirsch index
have been gathered. The mechanism how to increase the h-index has been
presented. Some similarities between h-index and the journal impact
factor (JIF) have been stressed. Also the universal role of H-index in
ranking countries in all areas and in Engineering has been exampled in
extended tables.
The Glanzel's model which connects the h-index with two fundamental
scientometric indicators: number of publications and the rate of
citation, has been analysed. Following the Microsoft Academic Search,
the lists of 15 top scientists from various academic disciplines and
separately in Engineering have been composed. It has been found that the
population of the best keeps basically the same relations between the
h-index and a number of publication, and between the h-index and a
citation number. However, even the best in Engineering should publish 2
times a year or more papers to receive the same h-index as top
scientists in overall domains.
The h-index distribution of domestic Engineering sub-disciplines has
been presented and analysed in statistic categories. The suitable
h-histograms and the cumulative probability density function (CPDF) have
been elaborated for 21 sub-disciplines and thereupon the Engineering
sub-disciplines have been arranged into three clusters. It has been
demonstrated that Engineering as the whole and Engineering
sub-disciplines are underestimated, compared to other academic
disciplines. The adequate normalisation factors have been suggested.
Several other conclusions considered the h,H-indices as the measure of
the knowledge progress addressed to individual researchers and to
collective, e.g., journals, institutions, organisations, countries,
adequately have been written. The h,H-indices are the general measure of
the position of the given subject (person or organisation) but cannot be
universal.

Abstract:
Purpose - The aim of this study is to compare the situation of internet
resource citations in scientific articles of the journals of Shahid
Beheshti University of Medical Sciences from 2005-2009.
Design/methodology/approach - The research method is an analytical
survey with webometrics and citation analysis. The internet was used as
a tool for accessing articles. They are separately analyzed on the basis
of journal name and publication year. The analysis is done using MATLAB
and Excel software.
Findings - A total of 717 articles from seven journals during five years
were reviewed. Of 13,448 citations extracted, 120 internet references
were found. The final results indicated that the sum of web citations is
less than 1 per cent of total citations and only 52 per cent of internet
citations in studied journal articles are available. The average
half-life for the medical journals is estimated to be 1.02 years.
Practical implications - To increase the rate of URLs availability,
publishers should oblige authors to utilize online archives such as
WebCite to preserve expected information for all of the citations
referred to in their articles.
Originality/value - This research would be valuable since it is the
first that studies stability and persistence of URL domains of medical
journals published in Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences
according to type of domain names and file extensions. Moreover, this is
the first time that the half-life for medical universities web citations
is calculated.
